    Excellant optical drive

    • Written by from everson

Nice, Clean, simple to use optical drive. Worked flawlessly straight out of the box....If people read the product descriptions, then they would know what to and NOT what to expect from this unit.....Does its job well......

    Unimpressed with the Super Drive

    • Written by from Minneapolis

Just purchased the USB SuperDrive from my local Apple store. Brought it home plugged it in and started to download some CD's into ITunes. First couple of CD's went really quickly, burn speed were reaching 14/15 x. Put in my third CD and heard a fairly loud noise that didn't sound quite right. Pulled the CD out, put it back in, noise was gone, but the CD download time was now barely hitting 4/5x. Unplugged it. Restarted computer. Same issue, but now it is freezing up. Then I read the reviews. Sorry Apple. This product is coming back.

Exactly what I thought it would be!

    • Written by from Moorhead

Easy to install, easy to use, and it matches the look of my iMac 27 very well.

As far as I'm concerned, it performs exactly as I would expect it to.

My one complaint is that the cord is RIDICULOUSLY short... that's not much of a complaint, though. Ha!

I wouldn't hesitate for a moment buying another one of these devices. Carefully read the product description before you buy it, but then proceed with confidence!

    SuperDrive Should be False Advertising

    • Written by from Goleta

I picked this up for my wife's 5k iMac so she could easily burn DVDs for her photography clients. The high point is what you usually get with Apple products: It's definitely sleek and sexy. Beyond that, the product reminds me of how exciting 2007 was, before we had Blu-Ray burners and USB 3. With USB 2 transfer speeds and no Blu-Ray codec, this should be no more than $25. It is an embarrassment and a shame to Apple.

    Fragile

    • Written by from San Jose

It is sleek looking, and matches the MacBook Air, but I'm on my 4th unit after being replaced repeatedly under the MBA AppleCare in the past 2years. One replacement came DOA. It won't accept DVDs just spits it out. When it does accept the disc, DVD Player can't play it.

Unit stays home most of the time and when in transport, carried in its original shipping foam-encapsulated box. Still fails after few use.

There must be other portable USB SuperDrive that works on a Mac that is far more reliable. Get those instead, and give up the sleek looks. This model is junk.

Don't Be Dissuaded by Ill-Informed Reviewers

    • Written by from Mesa

This superdrive works so flawlessly, you don't even have to think about it. It is compatible--as advertised--with Mac systems lacking a built-in optical drive, so it may not work with your Mac that has a dead built-in drive, nor with your PC (Windows-type) computer, nor while plugged into the radio of a 1957 Chevy. It also may not give the best results when it's upside down under your blankets with a poodle sleeping on it. It may not act reliably when used with a hub or if you cover your discs with glitter and glue before inserting them. Potential purchasers, don't be dissuaded by reviewers who aren't using this device along with the proper hardware. I bought it; I plugged it in; I inserted a disc into it; I selected "burn." How hard is that, people, honestly? Ask someone to review your BRAIN before you berate a product that does exactly what it is designed to do.

I have had no problems with this SuperDrive. It works very well when transferring movies to digital. It plays everything but blurays but then that doesn't bother me since I'm transferring to digital anyway. Great product for the price.

    Why???

    • Written by from SUGAR LAND

Well, i am typically satisfied with apple product but this drive is a cd devouring machine. If your beloved "old" cd is sitting around waiting to be added to your device be ware. The drive will make an engraving due to balancing issues on your disc. Here i am hoping to ensure the life of my favorite album of all time and it makes a horrendous noise and i force eject my cd. when i observe it. i notice an engraving in the middle of this disc. my life is now pointless. good bye world. thanks apple. you win again.

    Other fish in the sea

    • Written by from APO

I bought my SuperDrive because of my love of Apple products. I was smitten with her beauty, her grace, her elegance. How could I possibly be unfaithful to Apple, my new iMac, and Steve Jobs (r.i.p.) by giving her something something less than that $80 deserved? How could I POSSIBLY consider anything less for a perfect three-some: me, my new iMac, and her. But alas, she's my Lindsay Lohan, my Amy Winehouse, my Britney Spears. She's gorgeous, beautiful on the outside, but a mess, never enough rehab inside. So, I go back to my old external drive. Clunky, maybe. Clumsy to look at, yes. But, God help me, she'll do the things...

If I could give it zero stars, I would

This drive is terrible and doesn't live up to Apple standards. Completely unreliable drive. It routinely fails to even read discs and then is unable to eject discs and sits there attempting to read, eject, read, eject, etc. Just spent an hour trying to get a dvd out of the drive. Save your money and buy something else.

brand new from the box. Wanted to burn a video I made on iMovie. Placed my DVD in, half way through burning, it failed. And now it doesn't eject my CD. I have tried it hundreds of times. Given up. This is a rubbish product. Wake up Apple.

Serious mechanical issues inserting discs. Scratched them!

    • Written by from GILFORD

Bought the Apple USB Superdrive in late 2014 to go with my new iMac 27". I found after only several uses it had serious mechanical issues accepting discs. I only used the superdrive several times and now won't work. I used it twice for software installation, and once to a burn disc. I had trouble inserting the disc to be burned, and then had terrible trouble inserting any more discs. Seems like it has serious mechanical issues or just wouldn't read discs. The last attempt left the blank disc that I tried to burn scratched and unusable. Tried inserting more discs and it just kept scratching them! I could understand two years or so down the road this happening, but not straight out of the box. Now I have to figure out how to either return it, or get it fixed. Pain!!!

    This drive works great!

    • Written by from College Station

I used to store my images on DVDs so that I could free-up space on my iMac hard drive. However, after one OS upgrade (to Leopard?), 12 of my DVDs started to get read errors. I tried using several iMacs and Windoze machines to copy the data from these disks but it appeared that the DVDs had died of cosmic ray bombardment or something.

I tried again today using my new Apple USB SuperDrive and iMac (running Yosemite) and I can now read all of these DVDs without errors.

    Not up to Apple standards.

    • Written by from North York

Consider a less expensive alternative. Hasn't burned discs properly for years compared to the four other Apple computers I've owned with built in drives. It's recently decided that it can't find disc burning software at all.

I use this with my 2011 Air and have a fairly new 2014 Pro with built in drive to hold me for now, but worry about compact disc support going forward.

I feel Apple has ignored possible quality control issues with external CD support in their move to all things iCloud, but until CDs are extinct I expect the same attention to detail that I experience in all my other Apple products.

A one star review from an exclusive Apple user because I know they can do better.

    Mine Happily Works Well!

    • Written by from CHICAGO

After reading some reviews on this product, seeing how a lot of them had stated that their product didn't work well, they had permanently lost their disk, and return the product back to Apple. I was finally able to get the guts to use mine today, and play a DVD. There were times I was extremely nervous that it will just break down on me. For instance, I wasn't quite sure if it would accept my disk after sliding it in, there were a couple of times the DVD program had froze, but it was for a short time (thankfully). I also left my laptop for awhile, and it fell into sleep mode. During this time I was so afraid that the SuperDrive would just stop working when I came back, but thankfully it still worked. And when I ejected my DVD, it came out without a problem! All I can say is how thankful, and lucky I am to have a wonderful working product. And to whomever gets this product, good luck!

    love it but....

    • Written by from Mathews

i love it it works well but my worry is the cord will break because it doesn't seem to be made any different then iPhone/iPod chargers and everything is wireless now so they should really make a bluetooth version that would be a big help. Also i think it should definitely be blu-ray.

Apple USB SuperDrive + MBA 2014

    • Written by from Pittsburg

Does not work, consistently ejects new discs saying insert blank disc have used CD-R & CD-RW in my attempts Itunes wont burn multiple cd's without needing to restart the application then still hit or miss on if itunes drive recognizes disc at all.
I am very disappointed actually that is an understatement, I spent $79+ for a drive that isnt super it isnt even ordinary I have busted out my ol school omega CD writer now just cant waist time trying to just burn a disc Ridiculous. no drivers plugins or anything that I can find to resolve all new equipment no excuses shame it should be seamless I should be able to purchase this "SuperDrive" that is an apple product connect it to my "Macbook Air" which needless to say is by apple and burn from Itunes without any issues don't you think? just a thought also if you MBA doesn't come with a CD/DVD Drive that product particularly should be seamless.

    Worst apple product available.

    • Written by from Minnetonka

I've never written a consumer review but this SuperDrive is absolutely horrible. I purchased this with my Macbook air and just a week after owning it, it no longer reads disks. I've tried troubleshooting the problem online, but to no end. Absolutely atrocious product.
