    $20 per disc load...

I bought the USB Superdrive with my MBA in 2011. I used it to install four different software programs. When I went to use it a week ago, it wouldn't accept any discs - the drive mechanism was failing. So for $80, I was able to load FOUR discs. I took it to the Apple Store and they offered to give me a refurb for $60+. This drive is a piece of junk, but since you have a machine w/o a drive, you have no choice. Good luck with this purchase.

The Worst external DVD drive I've ever seen. By far.

Save yourself some grief. Buy a decent drive from any other manufacturer for $10 less, it'll be a better drive.

12 times in a row, I've been trying to eject a movie DVD from my new Superdrive connected to my Macbook Retina. Each time, the DVD doesn't quite make it past the mouth of the drive, stops, goes back in and starts autoplay. There is no eject button on the Macbook Retina keyboard.

I've tried Ctrl-E, the Eject button on the DVD Player window, Disk Utility eject, and Terminal command "drutil eject". All repeatedly. This would not be a problem if, like most DVD drives, it had a small hole you could poke a paper clip into to physically eject the disc. The Superdrive is featureless except for it's slot. It doesn't even have an eject button. I'm taking it to the Apple store when I get a chance, and glad that I live near one.

If I hadn't had this problem it'd still be the worst external drive I've ever seen or used. It ONLY works with Macbook Retinas and Macbook Airs. If a DVD drive fails on another computer you can't use this one in the emergency. Doesn't even power up if it's plugged into anything else. The cord is ridiculously short, just few inches. It's a drive made for lab testing, not real human use. An embarrassing design failure made by corporate drones who forgot to look at real users.

Superdrive don't play CD's on Mac Book Pro Retina. iTunes crashes after playing only the first track. I tested it with many albums. Every time the first track ends, iTunes crashes. I'm very disappointed with my whole purchase: Mack Book Pro Retina + USB Superdrive.

Bought this with my new MacBook Air. Will not play any DVD, commercial or homemade. DVD Player crashes every time. Hoping Apple solves this with a software update. Forums are full of people with same problem. Not ready fro prime time.

    do not buy this product.
    it doesn't reliably reject discs,
no strategy consistently works to solve it.
sometimes it rejects the disc upon shutdown, but usually not
you can't tell whether there's a disc in there or not
sometimes a disc will show up by disc name as if it were a drive
sometimes the superdrive will show up as a device, even if there's a disc
either way it shows up, if it does at all, sometime the disc can't be ejected
it doesn't work with a hub
    the cord is too short
it drains the battery very fast, even if its not being used
Technical term for this device is TPoS. Do not buy.

I just bought a 15" macbook pro retina display along with the USB superdrive.
When I tried to play a DVD movie, the app quit by itself.
I've tried using Apple DVD Player, VLC, and MPlayerX. Same results for all 3 apps.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!

This external optical drive is incredibly slow (connected to my MBP Retina). It takes 15-30 min to transfer the data of 1 CD into iTunes. This is unacceptable!

    WORST APPLE PRODUCT......HANDS DOWN!!!

I heard some bad things about this drive from friends, and reviews..., but didn't believe that Apple would actually have a product for years and still have an ongoing problem. So I went ahead and bought it to use it with my MACBOOK PRO RETINA.
My main purpose of drive was to rip my wedding video and preserve it into Time Machine Backup. i went ahead and put in the first DVD, ripped fine... but as soon as i hit eject, it made quick eject sound, like its coming out, but instead of coming out, it parked itself right into it and started playing again.
i spent about 2 hours tried everything possible online to get it out.
i was devastated since the DVD was the Master and only copy of my wedding. eventually after 2-3 hours of hitting my head on it, DvD finally came out. i had to shake the drive and hold it upside down, and eject simaltaniously
    VERY BAD EXPERIENCE.
    RETURN IT RIGHT AWAY...
GOING WITH DIFFERENT SIMILAR BETTER PRODUCT.

    Super Drive Super Bad!

    • Written by from Bethesda

This super drive looks great but does not work well.
I have tried to use it to install two different programs for the Macbook Pro Retina (Parallels Desktop 7 and Microsoft Office). In both cases, the drive refused to install the programs. And once the disk was in, it did not eject right away (there is no eject button, and using the Finder eject option does not work reliably). The only thing that works is to shut down the laptop and try again various software options for ejecting the disk. And if you insert a disk that is not correctly formatted, good luck!
Overall, this is a poorly designed product, which is surprising coming from Apple.

I used the optical drive to install VMWare, Windows and Office when I first bought my Retina machine. Had to REINSTALL the same software and that's when my drive buggered. Wouldn't accept any CD/DVD media. I try to insert the media, but the drive does not pull it in. Total piece of junk.

Against my better judgment I bought this rather expensive drive a year or two ago and only use it sporadically. Now that I need it, it won't read discs (throwing I/O errors). Sadly it's too late to return it so I've just made a $80 donation to Apple :(

Does Not Work with Powered Hubs

    • Written by from Leona valley

65 of 89 people found this useful

Works ONLY when connected directly to a USB port in one of the supported Mac models. It does not work via powered USB hub, and the built-in USB cable is only a foot long. Therefore, you only can locate this product immediately adjacent to your Mac which is not practical to all. Consider this when purchasing a new Mac that no longer supplies the requisite internal Superdrive.

Problematic Right Out of the Box

I bought my external SuperDrive last week and cracked it open today to rip audiobook CDs into my iTunes library. Much to my great aggravation, this "Super"drive couldn't rip CDs until each disc was re-inserted multiple times and/or I repeatedly plugged/unplugged the USB connection on the drive. Through most of my adult life I've been such a huge proponent of Apple products and have owned multiple computers/iMacs/MacBooks over the years (along with multiple variants of iPods, iPhones, Time Capsules, etc). So for an Apple product to not work properly out of the box is both surprising and, based on my prior history with their products, entirely disappointing. This review is based on the drive I currently have on hand. I will return this POS tomorrow and see what happens. If so, I will write a new review. But for now, if I could give this thing a zero stars I would.

I just bought the 15" pro with retina display, so I needed a disc drive to go with it. I got the super drive because it's slim. I've only had it for about three weeks now and I can't eject discs. I have to hold the disc drive vertically to eject a disc so gravity can help the disc come out.
