USB super drive does not write with my Mac mini

    • Written by from Chapel Hill

I bought the USB super drive to use with my Mac mini - it plays DVDs alright but does not write to DVD R DL or non DL either. I took it back to the store and replaced immediately. Second one does not write either saying in does not recognize disc or disc is empty. I guess it's simply not compatible with the Mac mini?.

    only plays some dvds

    • Written by from gravenhurst

Not sure quite why but only some of my DVDs work with this drive. Plays software fine but when it comes to DVDs that is a new story. It is quite annoying as a student teacher who is trying to use educational material that i payed good money for and it doesn't work. Can't use my optical drive to play the material I want to use. My DVDs work on my old DVD player fine and in my PlayStation and also checked for scratches. So if you are using this to watch movies off of, don't bother because i fine only some of my movies work.

    Not robust

My SuperDrive was unreliable within weeks of opening and died within a year. It's beautiful and portable but it shouldn't be that disposable.

    What's not to like?

    • Written by from Caronport

Besides the price. I didn't actually bother looking at anything else. This is not made of cheap plastic and looks like it can take the rigours of family life. It's fast enough but best of all - you just plug it in and it works!

More expensive than the cheap competition, but...

    • Written by from Scotch Plains

It's faster, nice quality and most importantly, doesn't require the dual USB cable some of the cheep 3rd party drives need for the extra power required for reliable operation. Nice product, highly recommended.

    outstanding product

    • Written by from La Mirada

My only complaint is the short cord. Otherwise it is very quiet, very fast, and works effortlessly. And $79.00 is not expensive. If you think it is, buy a effing Dell.

    TERRIBLE!!!

    • Written by from Colorado Springs

Went back to the store today to return the 1st "SuperDrive" I purchased. The CD would insert, make a bit of noise and then sit it back out. I tried all types of software and nothing worked. I asked the staff to please plug it in to see if it worked (perhaps I was doing something wrong?). They said "Oh we are so sorry! Let's just get you another one so you can get on with your day!" 4 minutes later I was out the door with a shinny new box. Guess what happened?? #2 shinny box doesn't work either!! WTH??!!

Apple USB Superdrive not working after two weeks and a couple dozen CD uploads. CD stuck inside and I am afraid I have lost it based on the other reviews.

New. Used twice WILL NOT WORK!

    • Written by from Guyton

    Two things.....
This is a simple machine to use, and after two uses, it WILL NOT LOAD a CD.
I have loaded two software discs ... and this will not load another. There is not a DVD/CD in this device. Just in case, I have chosen EJECT, and nothing happens, and it will not accept my software CD.

Ridiculous. This is supposed to be the superior product !

    Piece of Junk

    • Written by from Knoxville

If i could rate this one star, I would. I bought a Superdrive for my new Macbook w/ retina, brought it home, and it refused to work. The drive would accept disks, spin for a minute, and then eject the disk.

I followed all Apple guidelines for the product and read all of their support information; nothing helped. I will be returning this piece of junk tomorrow.

I am a die-hard Apple fan and have always associated Apple with higher quality and durability. I payed 80 dollars for a drive that should have cost 40 because I believed in its quality. This drive does not live up to Apple's standards (the standards I thought they had) and they should not be selling it.

    RETURNING IT TOMORROW!

    • Written by from Chula Vista

It doesn't work! Tried following instruction booklet and several hours of searching for why it refuses to play the DVD's that work on a PC. This unit must be defective so I'm returning it tomorrow. My new Retina McBook Pro seems to be incompatible with this Apple USB SuperDrive...too much effort in vain! (I knew I should have insisted on the sales person helping at the store but she said it's a simple "plug and play"! Sorry...it doesn't play!!!

    Poor Quality

    • Written by from Harleysville

I purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive and after just a few months it broke and the drive just kept spinning. If you want a drive that actually has blu-ray capability and will last go with something else. Please don't waste your money on this.

Does the job my Mac Should Already Do!!

    • Written by from Houston

I purchased my fourth MacBook Pro today. It's been 4 years since I purchased my last MacBook Pro The USB SuperDrive is great, and it does it's job well....HOWEVER, why must I go out and spend another $80 to get my optical disk drive back after spending $2600 on a new Mac??? All my other Mac's came with a built-in SuperDrive. I know most software is available for download these days, but I can't burn CD's and DVD's without an optical drive (something I do several times a day as a musician and photographer), I can't format and perform clean install of a Mac without an optical drive to boot OS X from, I can't install Windows via BootCamp without an optical drive, and most importantly, without an optical drive I can't save a copy of my favorite artist's newest CD to my Mac for listening on the go or syncing with my iPhone or iPad! I came very close to buying a Certified Refurbished MacBook from Apple that was a couple years old, just so I could get the built-in optical drive, but for the money, it made more sense to buy a new one and pickup an external optical drive....unfortunately :(

    Superdrive

    • Written by from Delta

I recently decided that I would like to purchase the Apple Superdrive, upon reading the reviews, I was quite discouraged at all the negative comments. I visited an Apple Store, and spoke with one of there Tech Employees, voicing my concerns. He assured me that he had been using this product for the past couple of years and never had a problem, he also informed me that to his knowledge, any Superdrives's sold in his store had not been returned. I purchased the drive, and sceptically, connected it to my Mac Air. As one of the common complaints seems to be with the "Eject Disk " I went into settings and clicked on import, and then eject disc upon completion of importing files. To my delight this product did everything that I hoped it would do I have ripped dozens of CD's into my ITunes Library, watched a couple of Music Dvd's with no problems { not Blue Ray } and everything works great. Would I recommend this product? Absolutely, as long as u read the fine print as to which Mac's and operating systems it will work on. Don't forget this device is not a Blue Ray Player.
