    Beware Regional Limitation!

    • Written by from sSydney

This item has a Region Limitation for DVD's. When you plug it in for the first time you have to choose the region you are viewing the DVD from. Then you have only 5 more turns to change your DVD region before the Apple USB SuperDrive is locked permanently. If you travel the world with your laptop like me, or you buy DVDs from all over the world you'll be disappointed with the Covert Regional Limitation built into this device. Eventually you'll be forced to buy an Apple USB SuperDrive for every region in the world - and of course that is Apple's Sinister Marketing Plan. I returned my Apple USB SuperDrive to the shop and got a refund. Then I found an old portable DVD Burner/player without Regional Limitation and it works without having to choose a region. I recommend others to do the same..!

    Not up to Apple standards.

    • Written by from North York

Consider a less expensive alternative. Hasn't burned discs properly for years compared to the four other Apple computers I've owned with built in drives. It's recently decided that it can't find disc burning software at all.

I use this with my 2011 Air and have a fairly new 2014 Pro with built in drive to hold me for now, but worry about compact disc support going forward.

I feel Apple has ignored possible quality control issues with external CD support in their move to all things iCloud, but until CDs are extinct I expect the same attention to detail that I experience in all my other Apple products.

A one star review from an exclusive Apple user because I know they can do better.

    spins but won't eject cd

    • Written by from auburn

It is only the 2nd time I've used it! I ripped some MP3s from a CD to my MacBook Air. It worked fine. But when I went to burn the MP3s to a CD using the USB Superdrive it got part way then gave me an error and wouldn't complete nor eject. I have tried everything to eject it (short of taking it apart). When I plug it in it spins around and makes noise, but doesn't recognize anything is in there. Which is why I suspect it won't let me eject it. So not sure what to do now. I would suspect a manual eject function would be helpful.

Every DVD I try to play says that it not supported. Bought this with the MacBook Pro Retina and extremely disappointed. Waist of money.

Every CD I played or imported into iTunes had skipping glitches. Not worthy of the Apple name. Apple was useless when I called them about it.

    Super Drive Super Bad!

    • Written by from Bethesda

This super drive looks great but does not work well.
I have tried to use it to install two different programs for the Macbook Pro Retina (Parallels Desktop 7 and Microsoft Office). In both cases, the drive refused to install the programs. And once the disk was in, it did not eject right away (there is no eject button, and using the Finder eject option does not work reliably). The only thing that works is to shut down the laptop and try again various software options for ejecting the disk. And if you insert a disk that is not correctly formatted, good luck!
Overall, this is a poorly designed product, which is surprising coming from Apple.

Problematic Right Out of the Box

    • Written by from Hammonton

I bought my external SuperDrive last week and cracked it open today to rip audiobook CDs into my iTunes library. Much to my great aggravation, this "Super"drive couldn't rip CDs until each disc was re-inserted multiple times and/or I repeatedly plugged/unplugged the USB connection on the drive. Through most of my adult life I've been such a huge proponent of Apple products and have owned multiple computers/iMacs/MacBooks over the years (along with multiple variants of iPods, iPhones, Time Capsules, etc). So for an Apple product to not work properly out of the box is both surprising and, based on my prior history with their products, entirely disappointing. This review is based on the drive I currently have on hand. I will return this POS tomorrow and see what happens. If so, I will write a new review. But for now, if I could give this thing a zero stars I would.

    B.A.D. Do not buy..

    • Written by from Moses Lake

I switched from a PC to Apple with a Mac mini, then realized I wanted to watch DVDs and I did not have a disc drive. So I bought the Super Drive external player and it worked OK for a few months but has now become unresponsive. Today I put a disc in to play and it did not respond and I was unable to eject the disc. Completely dead. Now Apple support says I have to get an exchange, at my expense, and I will lose the disc I put in it to play. Lovely. As usual this seems to happen just outside warranty coverage and we the customer is left holding the bag for an inferior product. I am shopping for a non Apple DVD player that has actual controls and external power. Do not buy this product !!!

    Glad i purchased this

I was really skeptical about getting this after reading the negative reviews, but I needed it, so I went and purchased it today to install Parallels and Windows 8 on my rMBP.

The installation went without a hitch, and it's not as slow as a lot people who reviewed the SD said it was.

I'm glad I went with this despite the negative reviews.

    Works Great without ANY Problems!

    • Written by from Merced

Purchased this drive to install Win7 on my new 2012 MacBook Air with Mountain Lion on it and was quite a bit hesitant after all the negative reviews of it but I knew I needed it for what I had to do. Anyway got it in the mail today and all I can say is things went perfectly from the start to finish without a single problem. Maybe a small bit of humming and viberation while I had it sitting on a mouse pad when it was installing Windows from my Windows Disc. After Win7 was done and installed I then ejected the disc from Win7 OS and rebooted back to Mountain Lion for the burning of a DVD with the Drivers & Update support for my Windows that I installed. Well I followed all the prompts, installed my blank DVD-RW to have the content burned to Disc and that perfectly fine as well, with no problem what so ever. I then shut down from Mountain Lion, booted back into Windows and inserted the new Disc that was just burned with the Driver & Update support and that too went perfectly fine and really quite well. I have nothing to complain about at all about the USB Driver other than it does what it's suppose to do without any problems at all (For me anyway). Maybe these drives could be a luck of the draw on if you get a perfectly working one or a lemon one but I can't see or understand why so many people seem to be having trouble with them.

Oh and for the people mentioning the cable being a bit on the short side I personally find it being perfectly fine and also gives a good fair amount of space for the drive and Notebook when paired together. A cable any longer would just be a plain eyesore and would leave alot of unnecessary clutter around the work area.

I gave this review a FULL 5 STARS after it's great functionality & workmanship.

    Worst apple product available.

I've never written a consumer review but this SuperDrive is absolutely horrible. I purchased this with my Macbook air and just a week after owning it, it no longer reads disks. I've tried troubleshooting the problem online, but to no end. Absolutely atrocious product.

    Piece of junk

    • Written by from 大津市

I used the optical drive to install VMWare, Windows and Office when I first bought my Retina machine. Had to REINSTALL the same software and that's when my drive buggered. Wouldn't accept any CD/DVD media. I try to insert the media, but the drive does not pull it in. Total piece of junk.

I bought this months ago when my CD/DVD player on mac got object stuck into. This will not take a CD or DVD. Can not get a CD blank or a new one to see if or how it works. tried everything. won't work. It is really less than a one star!!!!! That was $79 plus tax and shipping wasted.

Even after reading some of the reviews, I bought the superdrive, plugged it in and found it works perfect on my 15' Mac Book Pro Retina Display. I find the cord a perfect length and have had no issues with any disk ejecting, this is a great product that is fast, simple to use, and works as advertised.

Very seldom ejects discs without having to pick the unit up and and turn it on edge. Fine apart from this. Not what I expect from Apple.

Serious mechanical issues inserting discs. Scratched them!

    • Written by from GILFORD

Bought the Apple USB Superdrive in late 2014 to go with my new iMac 27". I found after only several uses it had serious mechanical issues accepting discs. I only used the superdrive several times and now won't work. I used it twice for software installation, and once to a burn disc. I had trouble inserting the disc to be burned, and then had terrible trouble inserting any more discs. Seems like it has serious mechanical issues or just wouldn't read discs. The last attempt left the blank disc that I tried to burn scratched and unusable. Tried inserting more discs and it just kept scratching them! I could understand two years or so down the road this happening, but not straight out of the box. Now I have to figure out how to either return it, or get it fixed. Pain!!!
