    Bought along with Macbook retina

    • Written by from San Francisco

    do not buy this product.
    it doesn't reliably reject discs,
no strategy consistently works to solve it.
sometimes it rejects the disc upon shutdown, but usually not
you can't tell whether there's a disc in there or not
sometimes a disc will show up by disc name as if it were a drive
sometimes the superdrive will show up as a device, even if there's a disc
either way it shows up, if it does at all, sometime the disc can't be ejected
it doesn't work with a hub
    the cord is too short
it drains the battery very fast, even if its not being used
Technical term for this device is TPoS. Do not buy.

    No Manual Eject Button!

    • Written by from Hopkinton

Have a brand new (Sept. 2013) MacBook Air and Apple USB Superdrive.
Cannot eject the DVD from the drive. "Eject DVD" in "Controls Menu" is greyed out.
There is no way to manually eject he DVD; no eject button, no pin hole.
    Lousy design !!!

    Really ?!

    • Written by from Tucson

By far the weakest apple product I have ever owned. If it was just bad outright it would make some sense, but it infuriatingly all over the map. Works rarely, then won't read disks, but then will with restart, but then stops after 2 disks. Every glitch is a time sucker because it struggles with a disk for long periods unsuccessfully , while refusing to respond to stop or eject commands. Looking online reveals a host of problems with this piece of hardware. Inexcusable as optical drives are such a mature technology.

I heard some bad things about this drive from friends, and reviews..., but didn't believe that Apple would actually have a product for years and still have an ongoing problem. So I went ahead and bought it to use it with my MACBOOK PRO RETINA.
My main purpose of drive was to rip my wedding video and preserve it into Time Machine Backup. i went ahead and put in the first DVD, ripped fine... but as soon as i hit eject, it made quick eject sound, like its coming out, but instead of coming out, it parked itself right into it and started playing again.
i spent about 2 hours tried everything possible online to get it out.
i was devastated since the DVD was the Master and only copy of my wedding. eventually after 2-3 hours of hitting my head on it, DvD finally came out. i had to shake the drive and hold it upside down, and eject simaltaniously

I just bought a 15" macbook pro retina display along with the USB superdrive.
When I tried to play a DVD movie, the app quit by itself.
I've tried using Apple DVD Player, VLC, and MPlayerX. Same results for all 3 apps.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!

    Shameful performance. Disgraceful product.

    • Written by from San Francisco

I have already had two replacements for this product. The original was DOA. The second lasted a week before dying. Four or five months later, the third is stuttering and spewing out faulty CDRs. Even when it successfully burns a disc, it takes at least five or six times as long as my other old drive from a different manufacturer.
Looks nice, but is woeful. Reliability is zero. One cannot trust any CDR one burns with this machine. I have owned at least half-a-dozen external drives over the years, and none has been worse than this contraption. Atrocious. One star is almost too generous.

    People are not very smart

    • Written by from Hammond

The reviews bashing this thing is nuts!!!!!! People complaining bc it doesn't have a eject button.. Seriously? If you knew 1/10 of anything about a Mac, you would know you can right click on the disc icon on the desktop and click EJECT!!!! Secondly, if the cord is too short for your use, buy a 2 dollar male to female USB adapter!!!!!!!!!!!! Third, take a chill pill, of course it doesn't work with your 1990 Mac desktop, the firmware is completely out of date.. Fourth, IT IS A DVD PLAYER, NOT A BLURAY PLAYER, of course it doesn't play BluRays. No where does it even lead you to believe it plays them. Apple can't just slap a BluRay drive in it.. It's called copyright laws. Sony owns the rights to BluRay... Tell them about it..

Functional, but by no means award winning

    • Written by from Houston

Unless I am missing something, the superdrive requires a super close connection to the computer. I have 100 things that need to plug into my laptop via USB, and so I use hubs. But, the USB Superdrive will not function if plugged into a hub, even a powered one; not even a superpowered one.

So, it works, but I lose the use of 50% of my usb ports when I use it, and 95% of my USB functionality.

And, the cord is WAY too short. It's time to upgrade the unit to Thunderbolt and give it a daisy chain. If that costs too much, how about USB 3.0?

In any case, functional, but by no means award winning.

This external optical drive is incredibly slow (connected to my MBP Retina). It takes 15-30 min to transfer the data of 1 CD into iTunes. This is unacceptable!

    Piece of absolute garbage

    • Written by from Oakland

If I could give this not superdrive no stars, I would. I'm on my 4th one and it doesn't work properly. The first two just stopped working after about sic=x months. Half the time, the Mac doesn't recognize the superdrive when you plug it in. Half the time it doesn't recognize the DVD. When you're using the superdrive to play a DVD and you plug the Mac into a power source, you get a player error message and it crashes. You unplug the superdrive it and plug it back in and nothing. The Mac doesn't recognize the player and you can't eject the DVD by any method.

    What Mac are you USING!!

    • Written by from North Salem

All of the bad reviews don't state which version/model year/cpu of MB their using..To trash this drive before telling us is just poor reviewing..All the newer macs with retina work flawlessly with this drive..To write all these complaints and not telling us is a waste of everybodys time and causes a lot of confusion when deciding on a purchase..

    Not Good For Apple

    • Written by from Dayton

It seems to spit out about 50% to 60% of the DVDs and CDs. Some of the discs were brand new and the others were close to perfect. I bought a different, cheaper drive and haven't had a problem.

Have used a few other DVD/CD burners but find Apple's USB SuperDrive to be a very reliable unit in comparison. It may not be the fastest burner out there, but it's reliability more than makes up for it.
