I have a Mac Air and this burner is absolutely perfect for the Air. I bought the air for size, weight travel advantages and knowing that if needed I have the burn capability with me without the size, weight, etc... makes it a great 1-2 punch. The attached cable is so simple. For me it was the deal breaker in terms of being able to justify the total package of the MacAir.

with all the product enhancements in the computers and the need for speed.The lack of the usb 3.0 interface. Plus the overdue addition of read/write of BlueRay Discs

When buying my USB Superdrive at the apple store, I was told it does DIVs and CDs. I said I wanted to watch movies - who does own a mixture of regular and blueray DVDs.
Silly me - I forgot to specifically ask about blueray. Who in this day sells a drive for over $80 (with taxes) without blueray. I should have purchased the other brand at BEST BUY, but I wanted to support my local Apple store.

The sales person shoulld have told me, they claim to be the experts. He made a point of stressing I could not return it, it was only covered under warrenty. He lost my business, I will now shop at BEST BUY or the store in the mall.

Yesterday I rated the drive 1 star. I put in an HP DVD-R 16x with LightScribe disk and it refused to recognize the disk at all. Total fail. I tried several known virgin disks.

Today I bought some Memorex DVD+R 16x disks and popped one in and it worked perfectly first time. Not the fastest drive in the world (limited to 8x on my system) but like all Apple stuff, it just worked, no fiddling with man pages!

Wonder if it is the minus R that is the problem, or the Lightscribe, or something else?

However, if you have a DOA drive as mine was, I suggest putting in a new, vanilla +R disk.

It works good but what a bad idea with this cable sticking from the back of the unit.If you want to carry this unit be prepared that the cable will break .I already replaced one under warranty and after 2 months another broke down.

My "superdrive" has eaten a music CD. It won't read and won't eject. I expected a lot more from an apple product!

I purchased my SuperDrive at an Apple Store shortly after I received my 15" MacBook Pro with retina display. All of my music was on a 6 year old MacBook and Apple wanted me to leave both of my laptops at their store for 24-48 hours to get the music transferred. I didn't really want to be without my machines. I had a little time on my hands (I am retired) so I decided to load all of my music CD by CD. The SuperDrive performed nearly flawlessly. It took a couple of days but I got it done! I synced all of the remaining music from my iPhone. I did have some disc ejection issues, but it was always a slightly warped disc. When I loaded Office 11 it took me a while to locate the eject command in Office, otherwise the disc would still be in the drive. It would be nice to have an eject button on the SuperDrive.

The drive itself works fine, IF you have the correct computer. I purchased it for use with my Mac mini--which it claims to support. However, it only supports the NEWEST mac mini, the one with no internal optical drive. I spent 30 minutes online with an Apple support tech who tried hard to get my older Mac mini (which reads DVDs but can't write them) to work with the drive, which it recognized but would not use. Apparently no one told support about the new superdrive firmware that disables it when it detects ANY optical drive in a Mac mini.
So if you're buying a NEW Mac mini, go ahead with this device. But DO NOT BELIEVE THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION THAT SAYS IT WORKS WITH "THE MAC MINI"--it only works with SOME (i.e. new, optical-diskless) Mac minis.
I've sometimes been upset at Apple design decisions (remember the Apple ///? The Macintosh Portable?) but this is the first time I've been burned by DECEPTIVE product descriptions.

Just bought a Mac Mini a few weeks ago and knew I would need the companion superdrive to compliment the rest of my set up, it worked flawlessly when i plugged it in and has been working flawlessly ever since. i wish the cord was a little longer but it was never a deal breaker for me. I have it set up with my Mac Mini, Apple TV, a set of Bose speakers and my 32' HDTV, wireless keyboard & magic mouse.

Why people are having so many negative issues I can't understand, but for me......it's a
'Winner'!
