Really don't like the MagSafe 2 Power Adapter

    • Written by from London

I love my MacBook Air but I really don't like the new MagSafe 2 Power Adapter. The previous one was absolutely fine and worked well. The new one comes out way too easily, especially if you are working with your laptop away from a desk. It is incredibly annoying.

I am also a bit unhappy that the adapter has changed when I purchased a replacement computer even though it is exactly the same model of computer. Hmm. Feels like it's a ploy to make more money from the customer. But even that I don't mind. It's the fact that the MagSafe 2 is just really badly designed and doesn't take user scenarios into account, which is quite strange given that it's Apple's strength.

I hope that Apple people actually read these comments and take note. Thanks.

    thoughtless design

    • Written by from Santa Monica

    If I sneeze it unplugs.
If someone shuts the door the change in air pressure makes it unplug.
As the tides shift it will unplug.
Forget about working with the computer on your lap.
The tiny magnet I used in nursery school to gather iron filings in the sandbox was stronger.
And it unseats so easily that time and time again when I think it's charging it's not.
Bad, bad, bad. For shame. And it is so easy to fix.

    Really unacceptable

    • Written by from Steamboat Sprngs

I have had so many of these power adapter fail over the last 4 years, I can almost make the leaning tower of Pisa. The strain reliefs break, they burn out. This is something that Apple has to address, but its probably part of their revenue stream controlled obsolescence. Other than that I love my Mac's.

    Silly design decision

    • Written by from Richmond

The previous magsafe with the 90' cable angle was perfect, why change it? With Magsafe 2, every time I work with my mac on my bed it unplugs the cable.... FAIL

    Poor design

    • Written by from London

So glad I didn't purchase additional adapters - I'm having more luck with my original MBP adapter and the Magsafe (1) to Magsafe 2 converter. At least the cable then leaves at a sensible angle.

Have the 27" Thunderbolt display so needed to buy some converters - so glad I did. The Magsafe 2 power unit spends most of it time gathering dust.

Having looked at this, there are two design faults - and it's not the magnet strength. If you try and pull the cable out using pure horizontal force, it's really difficult - a vote for the magnets. It's just that the MS2 adapter plug is twice the depth of the MS1 barrel-shaped unit and by the laws of physics - levers and all that, the slightest downward pull (including the cable weight) will pull the darn thing out.

Apple don't need to redesign the MacBook and for goodness sake don't give us MS3 - just go back to the barrel shaped connection with right angle cable. Is that too difficult?

Oh - and offer an adapter swap for those loyal customers who are hacked off. For free.

    MAGNET TOO WEAK!

    • Written by from New Orleans

This new power cord is terrible - it falls out if you look at it funny, think its name three times or if the dog barks particularly loudly. It's driving me crazy. Please come up with a fix for this!!

    Charging problem!

    • Written by from Irvine

I just bought a new MacBook Pro with Retina Display a week. It ran out of battery 3 days ago and I couldn't recharge it. Everytime I plug into AC outlet, the green light of the MagSafe 2 connector appeared just half a second and ...dead! Of course my McBook Pro can't return to life... Unfortunately, I'm out of the US (Vietnam), so I can do nothing untill going back home.
(I did everything Apple recommend in Trouble Shooting like plug out, clean connector....).
    I'm very disappointed!

Problems within the first two weeks.

    • Written by from Stanhope

I thought we were done with the t-shaped design, for starters the magnet is significantly weaker and the design causes the cord to be ripped out much to easily. I get that it's a safety feature but me moving my laptop from one side of the desk to the other is not going to break the cord therefore the cord should not fall out.

Also the cord itself is incredibly thin and fragile a friend stepped on it and the outer casing tore completely open. This is not ok, Apple is beginning to make very poor decisions about the quality of there products, something which the entire company is based on. I think that Steve would be disappointed.

Charger Model A1424 RIP: 85 Functioning Days Before Death

    • Written by from KENNESAW

Purchased on June 29, 2012, my Retina Display Mac Book Pro 85W Power Adapter died two hours ago. This charger was permanently installed at my work station and removed perhaps 5 times over its entire working life. Roughing it up is certainly out of the question. Thankfully, its still in warranty, so this replacement is merely an unexpected inconvenience. If I have to replace my power adapter every three to six months, I'll be selling this laptop ASAP and moving back to a (cheaper) windows machine from one of the many reliable manufacturers. I've already spent an hour of my time wasted on researching the problem and troubleshooting, now I have to wait 4 days for an appointment to have my charger replaced. Back to one of my ancient windows machines for the next few days. Buggy as they are, their chargers are as old as their machine, 7 and 10 years respectively.

Much worse than Magsafe for Macbook Airs

    • Written by from Milsons Point

I have had 3 Macbook airs and the magsafe adapters for them where all perfect. I agree with others this new Magsafe 2 on the retina MBP has two issues.

    1. The magnet is too weak
    2. The plug should be an L design, not a T. having a T exposes the cord sideways too much so that leverage is obtained by the cord to dislodge the plug!

Apple, I expect a replacement, this adapter is simply not to your standards.

    The plug that unplugs....constantly

    • Written by from Lakewood

I have actually stopped working, Googled this adapter and logged in to vent about this re-design/un-design.

I know Apple has more money than God now and, apparently, can do pretty much as it pleases, but what the @#$#! ? Is there no time or money or care to user test these things? And if this laptop were some cheapo rig from Dell or Toshiba or whomever makes them these days, then it would be a case of you get what you payf for. But, I'm not getting what I paid for here.

Echoing other comments that the plug sticks out too far the making it too easy to knock out of the socket.

Who knows maybe they think no one actual charges their MacBooks while working or works anywhere but on a desk, regardless I would expect to see version two of this adapter revert to a stronger magnet and the L-shape.

magsafe 2 is a few steps backward

    • Written by from fresno

It is too thin and sticks out too far which causes the magsafe to constantly disconnect from the macbook air. This thin design would work much better if they just kept the L shape. The thin surface area of the magnetic contact wouldn't be effected as much if the L design was kept rather than going back to the T design. The L design seemed to me much better. Why Apple would go back to the T doesn't seem rational to me but to thin down the magnetic surface and go back to the T design was really stupid.

    Something is wrong with this.

    • Written by from Saint-Brieuc

The new magsafe (2) is really badly designed, if disconnects constantly. The T shape is a step back. Why would anyone want to go back to a solution which has so many disadvantages?

When the computer sits on my desk, I often wonder how i got to deplete the battery. The problem comes from the cheap magnet in the new magsafe. It disconnects at any occasion, shuffling some papers around is enough... I never had this kind of problems with my previous macs. This is a step backward for apple.

On my laps the magsafe rarely remains connected, I gave up. Now I use the computer disconnected when I'm not at my desk.

The rMBP is gorgeous, but the new magsafe single handedly spoils the experience.

    You're kidding me, right?

    • Written by from Honolulu

This is an example of a product that needs the option to rate it 0 stars. No, negative stars. I'd give it -2. It's that bad...

I'm sure you've already read all the other glowing reviews for this POS so no need to repeat. My advice? Buy the old style charger and spend $10 on the tiny aluminum adapter. Yes, the tiny adapter does get stuck to the machine once in a while when you unmount the charger and you will probably eventually lose it one day. But the likelihood for this combo (either the adapter or the charger) to pull out under normal use is reduced 10,000 fold over this poorly designed charger.
