    Adapter not lasting long enough

    • Written by from Los Angeles

I don't know if i am unlucky or bad lucked or what but i have had two adapters already the first that came with the MBP and another i bought for Christmas, and now I'm going for a 3rd one! the first one lasted a year the only problem was the end of the cable was disintegrating and didn't pull enough power because the wires were not touching properly but the second and i don't really know how this happened! it just burnt out, like really? honestly how will just burn out! i tried not to bend it as much to avoid from repeating what happened to my first charger and now this one just burns out! honestly its not like the adapter is really cheap that i can buy 100 of them! I'm a college student and the second one was my Christmas gift now i will have to pay this out of my own wallet. I love my MPB but i think apple has to do something about the charger because i can't keep affording to buy a new one every year.

    Lasted 2 years

    • Written by from Orem

I noticed a little black ring that started forming around one of the pins inside of the magnetic connector a few months ago. Now that there are two of those rings, the charger only gives enough charge to maintain charge while in-use, whereas before, it would charge rather quickly, even under heavy use.

Sad day. This is as early of a malfunction from an Apple product as I've ever had, and this is the 11th Apple product I've purchased.

Good heat protection, but the cable...

    • Written by from Forli

Seriously, Apple should change the materials they use for their own cables, not only this but also all my iPhones start to become yellow and sworn near the connector after just a few months and then tear, stopping to work soon after. This never happened with any other brand of smartphones or notebooks and they are common cheap plastic. Apple's cables' rubber is RUBBISH falling in pieces.
My 2nd star is only because they do have a good heat protection auto recovery, which saved me from an early replacement, but still their power supply get hotter than average.

    Falls Out Way Too Easily

    • Written by from Roseville

What can I say? As a charger, it charges my computer.

However, it falls out way too easily. I'd be working on my computer while it's charging, and it would just disconnect if I move the computer a few centimeters.

Definitely dissatisfied with this thinner MagSafe charger.

    Price to high

    • Written by from Saucier

My hubby bought me the Mac book pro retina 15" screen for my Christmas loved it still loving it but after only three and half months charger just decided to quit on me. My Mac recognizes it but it doesn't charge at all. So I'm not sure if it's a defect or just my bad luck but since hubby at the time thought the protection plan was silly I just had to buy a whole new charger very expensive and another thing not really loving the magnet on it doesn't stay plugged in good enough if it gets moved just a little cord falls out! Love apple though

Back to the horrible T-connector and still scorching hot

    • Written by from Cedar Park

After learning their lesson with the last T-connector stress fraying, sparking, fail, Apple has strangely and stubbornly decided to go back to it for the new Retina MBPs. First of all like everyone is saying the magnet is just not strong enough. It pops off from simply moving the MBP from a table to your lap. Also, the thing gets hotter than any Magsafe I've ever had, even when fully ventilated. I don't understand the issue here Apple. You made a product better and then reversed all the changes. Why?

    Wrapping it up frayed cord

    • Written by from Clear Lake

Why would the only way to wrap the cord stress the connection to the charger to the point of early fray, of course at the least possible convenience?? Because it is a bad design. The cord snaps to itself nicely, but in doing so wears out the connection prematurely. 80$ later and inconvenienced again...computer works great and no issue with magnet. Makes me more careful with the computer when operating it, which I need.

    Annoying to use

    • Written by from Boynton beach

I keep my laptop charged 90% of the time and use my laptop ON MY LAP most of the time. You cannot use this charger on your lap without it knocking loose. The magnet is strong BUT because there is about .5mm too much space on the top and bottom when the magsafe is connected, it wiggles off too easily up and down. Side to side, it's very tight and secure. I understand the concept of having a charger that easily disconnects to protect the laptop from accidentally falling off a table or something, but this is ridiculous. Now I have resorted to buying the snug let to be able to use the laptop on my lap. Apple should reimburse us the cost of this little apparatus since they didn't make the charger right to begin with.

    Weak, Hot, materials are bad

    • Written by from Ashton Under-Lyne

I've had the charger for about a year now and about a month ago the wire started to get weak and break, it's revealed the wires under the protective wire, making me pretty scared to be holding incase I die! Also, the head of the charger gets super, super hot which I think makes the wire softer and making it easier to break. The heat hurts my hand too... Although, I don't think the magnet is as weak as people make it out to be but it isn't as strong as it needs to be.

I think I've found a solution [to the MagSafe 2 falling out]...

    • Written by from Kingston Upon Thames

I bought a MagSafe Power Adaptor and use a MagSafe->MagSafe 2 adaptor. It's not perfect, but sure works a heck of a lot better.

    Unplugged Again!

    • Written by from Escanaba

Searched online to see if anyone else was having issues with this adapter, and see that others have experienced the same problem I am having. I usually use this computer while sitting on the couch, and move it back and forth from the coffee table to my lap. I have found the cord often becomes unplugged. Previously had an MacBook Air, which I used the same way and can't recall having any such issues. The magnet seems strong when plugged in, but if tilted slightly up or down from movement, it falls out. Nothing I can't live with, but mildly annoying.

    Mostly bad design

    • Written by from Las Vegas

The magnet is definitely not strong enough on this charger. I've been through 3 chargers for my retina so I know exactly what I'm talking about. The charger also runs very hot.

Worst of all, the charger is extremely hard to find retail (I was left stranded when my puppy chewed one until it could be shipped), and costs a significant amount more than the other chargers. You have to find the exact charger for your macbook. I could be wrong here, but I think each model and screen size has a different charger. How hard could it be to standardize a charger?

I like the T design, but as stands I much prefer the side fitting charger for its magnetic strength. That being said, it is still a lot better than many PC chargers - but Apple has disappointed me with its design.

    falls out too easily

    • Written by from De Pere

if pulled directly, it stays plugged in well enough....but with any bump or pull vertically, it comes unplugged. incredibly inconvenient as it constantly detaches while on lap or whenever moving the computer.

    Very weak magnet

    • Written by from Lawrence

This magnet is very weak compared to previous MagSafe versions and as a result it is constantly faling off when used on any surface other then a desk.

    I hate the weak magnet!!!!

    • Written by from Radnor

It sticks out and the magnet is so weak it falls out if i move even the slightest bit, it is SO annoying i hate it. Not to mention, if I forget to bring my charger to school, I can't borrow anyone else's bc it's incompatible with older chargers. At least it charges (in the event it actually stays connected). Apple should issue every single customer and adapter for this POS, terrible design.

    New adapter inconvenient

    • Written by from Langley Park

Next to what other people have been saying about the adapter I want to note how annoying the t shaped connector is. I love putting the MBP on my lap to work on stuff but with the new T shaped connector it easily gets disconnected. This NEVER happened to the L shaped connector. It's very tricky to have it on your lap and not have it disconnect. One constantly has to be aware of the adapter. It's no good!

    Not Pleased

    • Written by from Clarksville

Ok I love the magnetic feature of the adapter but I hate the new look. The magnet doesn't stay in the Mac like it did in the old Macbook Pro as well. When I move my Mac around it detaches too easily. I can't stand that. Overall love the concept still of the magnet but don't like the new look or design. Not functional and that is unlike Apple.

    Dissapointed

    • Written by from Palo Alto

Just like the last versions of the magsafe power adaptors the cord is prone to splitting near the power supply box. On my last MBP I had to replace the power adaptor 3+ times in its 5 year career. I was hoping this new one would be different somehow (I dont know why i would think that). It finally broke again, after just 5 months of use. Luckily it is covered in the applecare so I wont have to buy a new $80 power adaptor.

For those who wonder if it was my doing somehow, it was not. As I have dealt with this problem before I take steps to prevent it from happening again. carefully wrapping it up, not pulling on it and I have a hard case it sits in while it is my bag.

Also, as many others have complained the magnet is not powerful enough. I agree on this point as well. It could use a stronger magnet so it does not fall out as easily. I can see how this would add to more cable splits from the power supply box.

Unfortunately, I realize that if you are reading this you already have a macbook pro (most likely) so you really dont have a choice in the matter. The only advice I can give to you know is that if you computer is covered in the applecare warranty, so is your adaptor (as long as its the one that computer came with). If the cable splits, get a genius appointment and get it replaced.

Charges fine, magnet not sticky enough.

    • Written by from Chaska

Charges fine, so I guess it does the job.

Doesn't overheat like my older one. So thats good.

Cable hasn't frayed at the connector, so I guess that's a plus.

I get why they made this thinner (nothing to do with the laptop being thinner....makes it harder to accidentally shove a usb stick in there) but:

    1) The L shape design was more convenient.
    2) Sit in a chair, move a little, and the thing falls off. Constantly. All. The. Time.

This is the first time I can remember where Apple got the actual usability so broken.
