    Broken after one year

    • Written by from Berkeley

Normal use, nothing special, cable twisted and came apart and must be replaced for $80. Pretty poor performance.

    Poor design

    • Written by from Havertown

As others have stated, the Magsafe 2 detaches way too easily.

I understand the purpose of the connector. It is supposed to detach in the event you trip over a cord. Previous versions of this connector provided this functionality without constantly detaching during normal operation.

Your laptop does not run at full speed unless it is plugged in. If you are doing something processor-intensive, you should be plugged in. With this adapter, it is an absolute pain to remain plugged in unless you are sitting at your desk. A lot of the more positive comments here suggest people only use the adapter for charging. Run some benchmarks on your laptop plugged in vs. not plugged in. You will be in for a surprise.

This will disconnect if you do any of the following:
    - Put it on a pillow
    - Put it on your bed
    - Put it on your sofa
    - Put it on your car seat
    - Put it on your lap

An otherwise excellent laptop is marred by this poor design.

    Terrible Charger

    • Written by from Brunswick East

This is the worst charger in the world. I does not do the job at all. I am constantly putting it back in when it has fallen out and then I have to fiddle with it to get it to charge. I hope apple listens to all these bad reviews and make another charger that will fit and do the job intended. I have given it one star but that is just because it wont let me give it 0.

back to the drawing board please

    • Written by from murfreesboro

ok, so Apple prides itself on design. the design isn't the problem, it looks good and sorta does what it is supposed to do. what do i mean by sorta? well, the purpose of the magsafe adapters is for the power cord to break away without dragging the laptop along for the ride. what everyone complains about, and rightfully so, is that the adapter disconnects WAY too easily when force is applied in an up or down motion, and way too easy is an understatement. if you pull the cord to the front or back, or straight out the adapter provides sufficient resistance before finally disconnecting. it is as if the adapter stays on too much or is too easily disconnected, not an elegant design worthy of Apples self appointed accolades. if you keep your rMBP on a desk and never move it the adapter works great, BUT just try and pick it up and keep the adapter connected.

    Magnet is too weak

    • Written by from Austin

I much prefer the older MagSafe power cord. The one that came with my new MBPr pops out far too easily. I regularly find my battery almost depleted because the cord came out without my knowing.

The MagSafe 2 has never been dropped or abused. When I plug it into the wall it sparks. It actually gets so hot you can't touch it.

    Bring back MagSafe L, PLEASE!

    • Written by from SAN FRANCISCO

I thought the trend was to miniaturize. What's up with the bulkier Magsafe 2?!? I gather that the hope is that if someone trips on the cord, it won't drag the MBP to the floor. The problem is that the connection is too strong laterally so it doesn't disengage when pulled laterally (which is when you want it to disengage), but too weak to remain attached when something lightly brushes up against it (which is when you DON'T want it to disengage). The L-connector was a much better design.

    Worst Power Supply Ever!!

    • Written by from Farwell

I have been a loyal Apple customer for years. I just "upgraded" from a 2011 MacBook Pro to a mid 2013 MacBook Air. The power cord that came with the Pro was great! I had the laptop since it was brand new in 2011 and had absolutely no problems with it. I have had my Air for 2 weeks and already see signs of wear at the power block where the small wire attaches. Also due to the design of the magnetic plug, I can no longer use the laptop on my lap or while laying in bed using the charger without frequent power disconnects.. I don't know if I would buy another Mac if they don't do something about this POOR design. I would rate at 0 stars if I could, Apple should be ashamed of themselves for letting this charger out on the market...

Flawed Design, Melting Casing, Fire Hazard

    • Written by from Bullhead City

I am now buying my 3rd charger for my macbook pro because of the flawed design. The wire frays and becomes incredibly hot to the point of melting the casing with wisps of smoke coming from it. That is a serious fire hazard. What is it going to take before apple changes the design??? Someone to die in their own house fire because the cord started burning? It happens suddenly and without warning. As soon as it happens I have about a day in which to order a replacement before it dies completely and I am stuck with a dead computer with no way to power it. the cord frays and melts from the smaller wire at the connection to the brick. This happens every time. Something really should be done about this charger because I have now spent $240 on power cords for my computer. The cords should last as long as the computer does!

    No Alternatives

    • Written by from Seattle

This product may be a fire hazard. There are two points of failure in the cable which will initially yellow, then warp and split exposing wire. I'm on my 2nd charger now, which Apple is replacing. Hopefully this new charger won't have this issue.

    Inferior product

    • Written by from Delft

I consider myself a loyal apple costumer, and I must say I am greatly dissatisfied by this charger!!!!
As everyone knows, the weakness of the apple chargers is the narrow wire close to the adapter. Obviously the wire breaks within now time. I have always been careful with the wires, this is the first time it breaks. For a laptop that has costed me about 2300 euro's, I find this highly offensive and I am very disappointed!!!
Also the MBP 15 inch retina is not as solid as one might expect for this price. Do not buy one!!!

    • Written by from Frederiksted

i have owned my macbook pro retina now for 1 year & 6 months now. i am on my 3rd(2nd purchase including original) apple 85 magsafe 2 power adapter. these power adapter seems to peel off the protective shield at the adapter plug in end resulting in failure or the wiring. same result with all i had. NOT SATISFIED AT ALL APPLE!!! $90.00($180.00 so far) adds up extremely fast for every 6 months replacement for a macbook pro retina costing me well over $3000.00. apple make a durable & rugged/long lasting power adapter. i am now starting to re-think going back to a PC(DELL OR HP). make me a happy mac owner or i am gone apple. nuff said.

    Bad design and doesn't last

    • Written by from San Carlos

I don't usually bother to write a review, but this adapter is just bad. This one is too easy to dislodge and after 1.5 years it's starting to fall apart. This is the first adapter I've ever owned that's done this. I wish there was an L adapter, or at least make the individual cords replaceable so I don't have to replace the whole thing.

Do NOT like this retrograde step

    • Written by from Walnut

Why did Apple go back to the old 'T' design it ditched years ago? Why is that now regarded as better when before it was regarded as worse? What is going on at Apple?

I love my new Macbook Pro Retina, but I really don't like this ugly, impractical new power connector. I hope they ditch it soon and we can get (what is now) the old style 'L' connector back,

Flawed design. Bring back the L shaped connector

    • Written by from Broomfield

I agree with all the negative reviews about the bad design. The point of a laptop is to well... use it in your lap and this adapter's design is very bad for that use. It gets disconnected very easily and compared to this the L shaped one was a no-brainer to use. Apple should atleast provide an alternate version with the L shape. I hope they will look at all these reviews and provide some alternative. Please please apple... I beg you

    SOOO unhappy

    • Written by from Rocky Point

Literally the worst charger. My first one fell apart and frayed in less than a year. Someone at the apple store felt bad and switched it out for me. I've had this one for about 1.5 years and one day the cord just cracked open and frayed apart. Real shoddy craftsmanship, Apple. Considering these things are 80 bucks a pop, you think you could make them better. I am so, SO disappointed. I have an appointment at the genius bar tomorrow. Hopefully someone can help me, because I'm not about to blow 80 bucks so I can be back in a year. Apple should be ashamed.

This item is disappointing. I'm not sure how this device passed QA due to it it disconnecting way too easy for practical use. Better off using previous the generation magsafe + adapter.
