I love my macbook, but absolutely HATE this new magsafe adapter. It constantly pops out whenever the laptop is moved and it sticks out way too far. The older generation one was perfect. Hopefully they move back to the older generation one next year.

Bad connector made even worse by adapter

    • Written by from La Verne

I am using a magsafe adapter because I have a thunderbolt display for my MBP. Rattling any other cable on my desk in the slightest way will disconnect the power, thus causing everything on my desktop to rearrange as it takes the thunderbolt display offline. The adapter adds just that much more leverage to the problem, making it even more likely that a disconnection will occur. This is a horrible "upgrade."

    Something is wrong with this.

    • Written by from Saint-Brieuc

The new magsafe (2) is really badly designed, if disconnects constantly. The T shape is a step back. Why would anyone want to go back to a solution which has so many disadvantages?

When the computer sits on my desk, I often wonder how i got to deplete the battery. The problem comes from the cheap magnet in the new magsafe. It disconnects at any occasion, shuffling some papers around is enough... I never had this kind of problems with my previous macs. This is a step backward for apple.

On my laps the magsafe rarely remains connected, I gave up. Now I use the computer disconnected when I'm not at my desk.

The rMBP is gorgeous, but the new magsafe single handedly spoils the experience.

    Giant step backwards

    • Written by from Sammamish

I really dislike the new MagSafe 2 connector, it comes out at least 10 times a day. Never had this problem with the previous MagSafe (both T and L designs). At this point I'd prefer an actual plug and risk my 3k rMBP hitting the floor a few times.

    HORRIBLE

    • Written by from Irvine

    CONS:

1.) T design head is the worst. It needs to be a L design like MagSafe1. This is an apple design flaw. T design deeps falling off, very very annoying. It's disappointing that the new design is a downgrade from the predecessor.

2.) While running a high resource environment, the power supply burns up insanely to a point it is almost hostile.

    PRO:

    none compared to MagSafe (original)

My 3rd Retina charger has just broke. I am completely fed up with how poor of quality the wire connection is. I wish Apple could make a charger that was up to the same quality of their computers...

    This adapter is majorly flawed.

    • Written by from Wheaton

I've had a couple of major issues with this adapter. Yes, it unplugs constantly, and it IS annoying. But my biggest issue is with the thinness/cheapness of the cord. I travel around with my rMBP quite a lot (work, school, home), and this cord does not withstand heavy travel well. In fact, I'll be replacing it for the second time tomorrow because the cord has a tendency to break where it meets the adapter... especially if you wind it around the clips like Apple recommends. I seriously wish they'd have tested this cord a bit more extensively. Minimalism only works when it, well, works.

    Cable burnt itself out

    • Written by from Calgary

My macbook pro battery was completely drained, so I plugged it in before going to bed. I woke up to the smell of smoke, and noticed that the cable coming out from the power adapter was melting, and burnt a hole in my hardwood floors. Not very happy about having to buy a new adapter that was only less than a year old, and a burnt mark in my floors...

    Needs a new design.

    • Written by from Shamokin Dam

I have had 3 chargers like this one now and all have broken from the little wire that goes into the box part of the charger. Being that Apple is one of the most expensive and top producers for gadgets to get online you think they would make a better quality charger where the wire is more sturdy and holds up longer. I am very disappointed at the fact that this is the third charger I have bought and it keeps breaking in the same spot. I am very unhappy with it and the price to get a new one is absolutely ridiculous when I know that it will happen again. Either one make the tiny cord as durable as the thicker cord on the other end of the charger or make this charger cheaper because this is ridiculous that no matter what this faulty charger is going to keep breaking and I will have to get a new one at the high price of $80.

PLEASE MAKE AN ALTERNATIVE CHARGER SIMILAR TO THE LAST MAGSAFE

    • Written by from Hockessin

Its amazing how happy I am with everything about my new Retina 15", yet how disappointed I am with the charger. It is so inferior to the previous version, it boggles me why you would feel comfortable including this with your new product. It puts SO many limitations on the usage of my macbook pro. Without a full charge, the computer is almost useless in bed or on the couch. In some ways, it is impossible to position the computer and charge at the same time. In others ways, the charger simply wont stay in unless I perfectly still and keep an eye on it at all times. I had NONE of these issues with the previous magsafe charger. PLEASE offer a version similar to that one for the Retina macbook pros.

    Falls Out Constantly

    • Written by from Medford

I've had Apple's since high school, iBooks, Powerbooks, Macbooks, and Macbook Pros. Overall the new Apple Retina Macbook Pro is great except for this one major design flaw. At first it seems like it is not a big deal, as if the problem is, touching the cable or moving the computer cause the issue, well then don't touch the cable or move the computer. Unfortunately that is not realistic for a "laptop".

As a web professional I use it all day so while I haven't counted I would imagine at least 30 times day it falls out. Many times I plug it back it, other times I don't notice and now constantly wonder why my battery is always in the read and then realize the cable unplugged. My partner has the exact same computer and the exact same issue.

Apple will never admit fault and will simply fix it it's next major revision which is quite unfortuante for all of us who forked 2 to 3 grand for this laptop. I can only hope they release and updated MagSafe 3 that works with the current retina that resolves the issue. Sure we would all hate to have to spend 40 bucks or such to buy a new cable due to Apple's design flaw but at least it would cure the issue.
