    Simply Awful

    • Written by from Mountain Top

Went through two of these so far. Both times, the insulation started splitting apart by the strain relief. I've never put these adapters through any unusual stress, just some occasional travel. Apple refused to replace them, saying that I must have bent the cables too much. I wish there were 3rd party chargers available. Unacceptable for a laptop that cost nearly $3k when it was new.

    Frays in a year

The cable frays about 1/2" from the magnet after about a year. I'll be replacing my second one, presently.

    Burned my office down

    • Written by

This charger caused a house fire, my home office desk made of wood caught fire in the middle of the middle of the night. My macbook pro was placed on my clean desk around 8:00pm and left to charge overnight as I can't bare to constantly reattach the weak magnetic connection between the charger and device. It was 2:30am when the smoke alarms awoke me and my family and as we scrambled to get everyone out of our home I noticed the smoke was coming from my office, I quickly grabbed the extinguisher and headed to the office, my desk was in flames, my chair melted and the wooden floor was charged, I quickly was able to put out the fire and open windows for ventilation. My daughters bedroom is next to my office and she is 2 years old. The apple charger was block that was plugged into the wall was completely melted and there was nothing left but dripping remnants of melted plastic, and I had suspected it was the charger from the beginning as the day prior it had blown my fuse to the office twice and it sparked and smoked but I figured apple would have designed a safety electrical current shut down but after insurance adjusters and the fire dept conducted an investigation it was clear from their conclusions the fire was cause by the plug.

I contacted apple and was told that they would have to images in which I supplied to a senior adviser and they referred me to an apple retail center to have the laptop evaluated. The retail store refused to replace, fix or even work on my MacBook Pro because AppleCare does not cover computers with foreign debris and since there was smoke damage my apple care was null and void. The senior tech I had submitted the images to said he was forwarding the info on to engineering department and once he received a response he would get back to me. I have yet to receive a response and it has been 47 days. I have left numerous voice messages with no response.

    CAUTION! CAUTION! CAUTION!
I was fortunate to have caught this fire in time but I stress DO NOT use the charger unless you are able to supervise the functioning 100% of the time. I will NEVER purchase anything from apple ever again. I'm disgusted with the quality, unprofessionalism and lack of integrity this company stands for.

VERY UNHAPPY APPLE CUSTOMER- DANGEROUS CHARGER

    • Written by from Leesburg

As a long time buyer of apple products I decided to buy a 15 inch MacBook Pro Retina. I absolutely love the laptop. It has a beautiful picture and runs like a champ. HOWEVER, the charger is completely horrible. After owning my laptop for 1 year and 2 months my charger burned through the wiring and outer protective sheath. Thank god I didn't have it on some type of cloth because it would have definitely lit something on fire based off of the damage to the wire and the smell or burning gases it produced. It's absolutely ridiculous that Apple makes billions of dollars a year with amazing products but makes something as dangerous and low quality as this charger. I went back to the store I purchased it from and they told me they couldn't help me and I had to buy a new one. When I'm paying $2000 for a laptop you better believe I expect top notch accessories to go with it. I am beyond angry right now about the quality and service of my product. If you're buying this charger keep in mind of the dangerous quality as well as the tendency for the charger to constantly fall out with the slightest touch.

Apple fixed something that wasn't broken - and made it worse

    • Written by from FAYETTEVILLE

I can't believe they actually paid an entire team of engineers for more than a year to redesign the power connector on the MacBook Pro - and they blew it. They've got this so messed up it's unusable. Apple's new design is fragile, with just a slight weight of the cable itself will pull the plug out from the computer. We've got a $4500 Retina, and we have to duct-tape the power supply to the computer. If we don't glue it on, we look up to see the machine's battery surprisingly gone dead with the cord on the floor. Ridiculous.

I hear Kensington is about to release a power supply with a "new" size, but with the old "L" shaped fitting that worked for 10 years (that actually stays put and doesn't fall out).

We didn't NEED a new size. We didn't NEED a new connector. We didn't NEED to replace the "L" connector. It was all fine, Apple. Talk about missing Steve -

    not worth the $

    • Written by from edmonds

I got a macbook pro with retina display in october, I love the computer but the power cord not so much! It get rips in it when coil it using the little hooks, now mine looks like a mummy with all the patches of electrical tape. It also over heats if you try to charge your laptop for over an hour. Over all I was expecting a little bit more for my money, I take good care of my electronics they should last at least a year!

    Hate the "New" Adapter

    • Written by from Houston

Absolutely unbelievable for a Laptop power connector to NOT stay connected when its on your LAP! Hello Apple, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? Never had a problem with the old adapter. Why did you have to change it? What "benefit" do we get with this new adapter? Did you forget these laptops might not be used at a desk and people will need a power cable ATTACHED for extended use? This adapter is totally unacceptable! Is there a fix so we can actually use our laptops without holding the adapter with one hand or balancing everything "just right"?

    Falls out!

    • Written by from Nine Mile Creek

The magnet is so weak that the weight of thin part of the power cord alone is sometimes enough force to remove the magnet. This really frustrates me as every time the cord falls out it is wasting a cycle of my battery's life. It would be great if this was remedied. and a new cable was to replace this one on a recall.

    Disconnects all the time

Gets disconnected all the time. I've had a 2010 MacBook Pro for 2 years with the original MagSafe and it pretty much never got disconnected. This is a HUGE downgrade from the original.

magsafe 2 is a few steps backward

    • Written by from fresno

It is too thin and sticks out too far which causes the magsafe to constantly disconnect from the macbook air. This thin design would work much better if they just kept the L shape. The thin surface area of the magnetic contact wouldn't be effected as much if the L design was kept rather than going back to the T design. The L design seemed to me much better. Why Apple would go back to the T doesn't seem rational to me but to thin down the magnetic surface and go back to the T design was really stupid.

Weak magnet = ANNOYING!!! Enough already!

    • Written by from Tujunga

It's hard for me to grasp why I spent $3800 on a Retnia MacBook Pro when Apple can't bother to fix the AWFUL AC adapter that never stays plugged in. If you touch it it falls out. Can nobody at Apple test such a simple thing before unleashing it on customers? Apple - please - when are you going to acknowledged and fix this already??

Some improvements, but even more problems

    • Written by from Geelong

Cant sit the laptop on my lap whilst charging. The adaptor simply pops out. Annoying that it isn't compatible without probably one of apple's highest marked-up items. $10 for a piece of aluminium?!

    Keeps falling off

    • Written by from Berlin

It's a really annoying piece of kit, as much as I understand the need to protect the computer itself and have the cable disconnect easily to prevent damage to the Macbook, it falls off WAY too easily, and after 10 months' use doesn't even stay in properly a lot of the time.

Bad Enough Charger to Avoid the Computer as a Product Entirely

    • Written by from New York

The Macbook Air is great for simplicity - as long as you charge it at night, you'll be good during the day. Charge during your busy work schedule, and you'll wanna blow your brains out because of the terrible charger that comes with all apple laptops. The magnet on this laptop charger is absolutely despicable, falls out, and fails in every possible charging situation besides when you leave the computer completely alone for several hours. I didn't buy a laptop to have it be used like a tower computer - when I put it in my lap, as the name implies, forget the charger - its guaranteed to fall out.

    CHANGE THE POWER CORD

    • Written by from hinsdale

THIS NEW POWER CORD IS THE WORST. Every single time i move my computer it falls out. I have to HOLD the power cord in place if i want it to stay in. This is ridiculous. Also, every time i plug it in, i have to wait and see if it starts to charge, because sometimes it wont!!!!! Sometimes it won't light up and i have to re-plug it in, readjust, move it around, play with it for 5 minutes before I find the PERFECT spot where it finally starts to charge. Its completely frustrating. This new power cord is unacceptable. I liked the old ones much better and I've never been this frustrated with an apple product ever. I don't know what the deal is but give us the old charger back and stop changing the design just to make money. Give us something that actually works.

    Worst power adaptor EVER

    • Written by from Ithaca

I have a new MacBook Pro - this is the 3rd one I've owned, so I've been through a few power adaptors. I have to say that this power adapter is the worst I've ever had. It has such a weak magnet that it falls out every time you move the computer. If the performance is similar to the ones I've had before, I'll probably have to pay a goodly amount to replace it before too long, and I hate to even think about throwing the money away for something so badly constructed. After all the years that people have been complaining about the inferior quality of MacBook and MacBook Pro adaptors, you'd think that they would have improved. Instead, I have a beautiful new computer with the worst adaptor on the planet!!!
