    Terrible, needs a stronger magnet

    • Written by from Brooklyn

It charges, when it is plugged in, but don't try moving your laptop or breath on it. It falls out any chance it gets. I feel as though this will destroy my battery in the long run, which will cost me $∞ to replace. It feels like Apple is making worse products so you have to replace them more frequently.

    Devolution

    • Written by from Port Coquitlam

Why Apple devolved into going backwards to inferior design of the T-shaped connector is beyond me. The previous designed stayed in place exactly when i wanted to and it could be leaned against things, which was the beauty of the newer design!
But the changed it back to the original, which now constatnly flips off the MacBook cause of weird angles of holding the laptop. Boooo

    Wow.

    • Written by from Toccoa

    A couple of problems.

    1. The L shape was great. The T shape is weak and not ergonomic at all. It gets pinched, and falls out much more than necessary.

    2. It gets hot! I mean, you can't even touch it. It's unbelievable.

    3. I haven't experienced fraying yet on it, but it sure seems possible. I understand exactly why others say that it has.

    4. The fact that the transformer's weight is so much makes it fall out of wall outlets. This doesn't seem like a major deal, but what about when you don't have a choice but the wall outlet and you don't want to extend your cable to be able to plug it in.

These decisions make absolutely no sense. Why would you design a product with so many flaws? A beautiful machine like a Retina MacBook Pro needs a better accessory. I literally can't say anything good about it. It charges my Mac. That's about the only thing good about it. It's a pitiful product, to be completely honest. Pitiful.

    Actually unbearable

    • Written by from Dix Hills

Cant believe Apple would ship out a product like this! I feel like the adapter owns and controls me. I have to constantly conscious of how I'm sitting, where the cables located, and the movements i make. Absolutely ridiculous! Fix this, i didn't pay a premium for shiny..

    Horrible charger

    • Written by from Oxford

I am extremely disappointed with the new charger for the macbook pro retina. IT doesn't stay magnetised at all. Its far too thin and if not on flat surface then it pops out all the time. Apple should rethink the design and implement changes as I actually miss my old 15" macbook from 2007, this charger is so bad, and with the price I paid this shouldn't be happening.

    Charger

    • Written by from Sandy Springs

I just bought a new 15" Macbook Pro RETINA, the charger snaps off with the slightest movement. Absolutely terrible that Apple would release such terrible charger. The laptop is great but this little thing makes it very irritating.

    Extremely weak magent

    • Written by from mountain view

The magnet falls out often enough that the charger is almost unusable. I've found the older magsafe1 adapter with a magsafe1 to 2 adapter to work much better, which is unfortunate.

Charger Model A1424 RIP: 85 Functioning Days Before Death

    • Written by from KENNESAW

Purchased on June 29, 2012, my Retina Display Mac Book Pro 85W Power Adapter died two hours ago. This charger was permanently installed at my work station and removed perhaps 5 times over its entire working life. Roughing it up is certainly out of the question. Thankfully, its still in warranty, so this replacement is merely an unexpected inconvenience. If I have to replace my power adapter every three to six months, I'll be selling this laptop ASAP and moving back to a (cheaper) windows machine from one of the many reliable manufacturers. I've already spent an hour of my time wasted on researching the problem and troubleshooting, now I have to wait 4 days for an appointment to have my charger replaced. Back to one of my ancient windows machines for the next few days. Buggy as they are, their chargers are as old as their machine, 7 and 10 years respectively.

    This thing Blows

    • Written by from Orlando

I agree with everyone that said this adapter blows. I loved the L shaped adapter, and I feel that apple screwed us with this new adapter. It falls out all the time, and gets pinched if the laptop is up against something else. The L shaped adapter was a revolutionary way to power a laptop, and worked great. Why did you change apple? Also, what the h3ll happened to my battery life time? You are constantly taking away things that made you great, or trying to keep your products incompatible with the rest of the world. Bring back the L shaped adapter. I can't believe I spend $3k on a laptop and lost the awesome L shaped connecter and my battery time. What good does percent do me?????

    Cord frayed from regular usage

    • Written by from Houston

The cord (the non-replaceable part) is extremely weak, and becomes brittle with regular usage. I recommend not using the cord winder wings, as this adds significantly to the wear and tear of the cord where it meets the body of the power adapter. My cord became frayed and finally failed after only about 6 months of usage. Granted, I am very portable, usually changing locations 3-4 times per day, but this cord is exceptionally weak. Why make the power plug replaceable, while a failure on the other end of the plug requires a replacement of the entire power supply? This is poor design, and appears to me to be designed for planned obsolescence.

Also, as everyone else has stated, the magnet is too weak in the MagSafe 2 design. I've got 3 other MacBooks, one with the L-shaped connector and the two with the old original MagSafe design, and this is by far the worst of the lot. I expect more when I pay for a premium product like the rMBP.

    Poor Design

    • Written by from Prince George

Ok so there are a lot of complaints about this power adapter coming detached way too easy and there are reviews saying quit complaining! Well I have had a Macbook Pro since 2006 and have updated 4 times and this new incarnation is the worst of them all. The magnetic connector was brilliant and saved my Macbook from being yanked off the table on many an occasion but this new one is very poor.
In my opinion its the design, the power cable comes straight out from the port instead of a 90 degree angle and this plus the weight of the cable is enough to make it detach very easily. Like other reviewers mine will detach just by moving my Mac, I am a huge Apple fan and love their designs but this one is a mistake, they need to go back to a cable that is angled from the port so it will stay connected but still come dislodged when the cable is yanked with enough force. Come on Apple read these reviews and tweak the design and make my retina Macbook the best laptop I have ever owned again!!

    Frustrating

    • Written by from Hollywood

Unless you put the Macbook Pro on a desk and plug it in you will find that this adaptor always comes unplugged with the slightest bump. I like to sit in a chair with the computer on my lap but if I plug it in the screen goes dim everytime the plug moves. I want another plug.

Apple: Bring Back the L-Shaped Connector, Please!

    • Written by from Albany

I've been using MacBooks/Pros for many many years and this new MagSafe connector is a serious annoyance and major step backwards. As everyone here is saying, it can't stay in place during normal use as "laptop" computer, which means additional wear to the battery!
Apple: please listen to your loyal customers and give us the choice of an L-shaped connector!

MagSafe 2: The worst thing about Retina MacBook Pros

    • Written by from Marlborough

My MagSafe 2 connector comes unplugged at least 3 times a day. It seems Apple has stopped testing their products. No one should have let this go into production. Two of my other Macs started crashing with new OSX releases. Then iOS 6 Maps. Why do faults like this keep happening over and over again in Apple products? It's no wonder that their stock has dropped 200 points in 3 months.

    Awful

    • Written by from CUPERTINO

This is probably the weakest magnet ever, it falls out whenever I put into my computer and move my computer in the slightest. I'm sorry but this was a really bad way to follow up the old charger. I hope Apple does something about it.

Like everyone else said - magnet is too weak and falls out all the time

    • Written by from Schwenksville

If you so much as pick the laptop up the power cable falls out. Tonight it fell out and my dog quietly grabbed it and chewed it up while I was using the computer. I have picked this thing up and plugged it back in about a million times in the couple of months that I have had this computer. Absolutely annoying poor design, and now quite expensive as well. This cord is in need of redesign.

    The plug that unplugs....constantly

    • Written by from Lakewood

I have actually stopped working, Googled this adapter and logged in to vent about this re-design/un-design.

I know Apple has more money than God now and, apparently, can do pretty much as it pleases, but what the @#$#! ? Is there no time or money or care to user test these things? And if this laptop were some cheapo rig from Dell or Toshiba or whomever makes them these days, then it would be a case of you get what you payf for. But, I'm not getting what I paid for here.

Echoing other comments that the plug sticks out too far the making it too easy to knock out of the socket.

Who knows maybe they think no one actual charges their MacBooks while working or works anywhere but on a desk, regardless I would expect to see version two of this adapter revert to a stronger magnet and the L-shape.
