    Simply Awful

    • Written by from Mountain Top

Went through two of these so far. Both times, the insulation started splitting apart by the strain relief. I've never put these adapters through any unusual stress, just some occasional travel. Apple refused to replace them, saying that I must have bent the cables too much. I wish there were 3rd party chargers available. Unacceptable for a laptop that cost nearly $3k when it was new.

    Amazingly disappointed

    • Written by from Aliso Viejo

I've owned my MPB Retina for two years. It's a phenomenal machine. As a matter of fact, I would say that it is the fastest, most reliable MBP I've ever owned (I've owned about 10 different Apple laptops over the years). However this power adapter is a joke. I just went through my second, and I am headed to the store to buy my third one in two years. Either the cable wears out or the adapter gets too hot and burns out. I am rather amazed at the contrast between the great quality of the MBP and this toy of an adapter and how they can be sold in the same box.

    worst charger yet

    • Written by from LOS ANGELES

why would they have a charger poking out when one flush is so much more aesthetic and actually stays put. I hate this charge and might be enough of a reason to return my new Mac Book Pro. SOOOOOO disappointed.

    Simply Revolutionary...

    • Written by from Los Angeles

First of all I'd like to start off with, nothing is wrong with the magnet and its fantastic. it's set so right that in case of accidents it'll not going to damage your computer... So don't complain about something apple took into consideration. Second I'm using it and I don't see any of the problems listed whatsoever.... On my lap it's working great on my desk it's amazing and so on. If it unpluging easily with you maybe You need to start treating your MBP's right!

    In defense of the magnet

    • Written by from Raleigh

I was surprised to see the level of vitriol directed at Apple because of the design of the new MagSafe 2 connector. You would think Apple ran off with some of theses reviewers' children or something. My own experience with this power adapter on a new MBA: I agree the L design might be preferable because it is more low-profile and is less likely to get bumped. On the other hand, I expected a weak magnet based on the angry reviews. The magnet is actually quite strong as you discover when you try pulling it off directly. In fact, it seems much stronger than the L connector I had on my old MBP. Now, if you tilt it up or down, it does come off fairly easily as you are sort of leveraging it off. But that is probably a good thing as it will save your lightweight MBA from getting pulled off a table. So, it seems to be a good compromise. It certainly does not fall out the way some are describing. Maybe Apple strengthened the magnet in the last year? I don't know, but it seems strong enough. Since the battery on the new MBA lasts a long time, I never have a need to use it while plugged in. It gets recharged overnight. I mean, the whole point of using a laptop is portability, so I try to time the charging so that I don't need to have it plugged in when I'm actually using it. But, the adapter isn't as horrible as people are making it out to be. Now, I do wish it wasn't as expensive as it is...

    MagSafe review

    • Written by from Dunedin

I have now 2 months of use with the MagSafe Adapter, and have absolutely no complaints with powering my MacBook Pro. A number of complaints from others on the sensitivity of the connection coming off with the slightest touch, but I'm careful and have had only a couple of times (My fault) when it pulled off. I was not careful then but am glad it does come off so I won't cause the computer to fall to the floor or I slip/fall. Could it be a bit better ? Perhaps, but I'm happy with it.

    Frays in a year

The cable frays about 1/2" from the magnet after about a year. I'll be replacing my second one, presently.

Absolutely horrible design. Why did you break something that worked fine?

    • Written by from Westminster

I hate this power supply. If I look at it wrong it falls out of my Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014 Macbook Pro. Any bump or movement and it falls out. If Jobs was still around this would not be sold and someone would have been fired by now. This needs to fit in a little deep or have a much stronger magnet to hold it more securely in place. The design of the power adapted on my other Mac points forward or backwards and is much better. It doesn't stick out as far so it's not getting bumped and knocked out of place like this one. But Apple had to change the charging port design again so I'm stuck with this piece of junk charger.

When I pay 3x the price of a PC laptop I really expect better than this Apple!

    Angry

    • Written by from Chicago

I've had my charger and computer for a little less than 2 years and my charger has stopped working. It will not charge my computer, or my work computer. I tried another charger and the computer charged fine...just to dismiss any suggestions that it is my battery, which would be equally unacceptable.

Apple, if you want to continue charging people an arm and a leg for your products you better live up to your quality. Do you see all the single star reviews here? Get it together. I will not be paying you another $80 for a new charger because the one you sold me is junk.

The 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter is beyond awful.

    • Written by from Minneapolis

I cannot even give the product 1 star, but am forced to. It is beyond frustrating to have to plug-in this adapter every time and I mean every time I barely touch my laptop. What kind of design flaw is this and when i it going to be addressed? I like the MacBook Pro, but am within my return period and may have to do so as I can't be plugging the darn cord in every time I touch the laptop.

    Comes out too Easily

    • Written by from Larkspur

I'm so glad to see the volume of neg votes. This power adapter shouldn't pop out so easily. When it's on my lap particularly!! I did not realize that it wasn't connected after over an hour of thinking it was. Valuable time lost. Hope they reconsider this design. You have to imagine that the committee or person who gave this the green light didn't use it.

Burned Itself Out. I've Never Been More Disappointed.

    • Written by from Sudbury

My first charger burned itself out in less than 7 months. I bought another for 80 bucks, and this one burned itself out again. COME ON PEOPLE. If you are going to make a junk product, make it cheap. If you are going to charge me through the roof, try and make a decent product. I am 100% switching back to PC's. I've had laptops for 1/4th the price, and last so much longer. Mac's are the divas of all computers.

Recall yet? Weak Magsafe 2 connection causes big headaches!

    • Written by from Norwich

Owned the original T-style. Worked ok but stuck out too far. Was thrilled with the L-style (inline) improvement when it came along and bought 2 new cords. Durable, dependable connection while working on your lap in an airport. IT NEVER CAME LOOSE.

New Magsafe 2 T-Syle connector? Should come with a free iTunes download of Britney's "Oops I Did It Again!"

For those who claim there is no issue - travel much?!? Sit in an average airport waiting area with this on your lap after having battled to an available outlet. Charge up for that 8 hour international flight while working. Then realize on the plane that ONCE AGAIN your weak Magsafe 2 plug got the slightest pressure from the fold of your pants and was NOT CHARGING. Has happened three times to me in the 4 weeks I've owned my new MacBook. Once causing me to be completely unprepared for a meeting as a result. Would be one thing if it actually falls out - would notice that. But at the slightest angle it stops charging unnoticed.

Taking new design risks and making mistakes is absolutely fine - to be encouraged even.

Going BACKWARDS two steps, to an obsolete design AND making the connection weaker is inexcusable incompetence.

    magsafe 2 is junk

    • Written by from Cache

I recently purchased the new 2014 macbook pro with top of the line everything. I love the laptop but the clowns who designed the magsafe 2 should be fired. What idiot made a huge T connector with a magnet that is as useful as obamas reign? This thing falls off when you move the laptop from a table to your lap, and NO the cord is not getting caught.
I have to say that between their design flaws and the software problems with ios 8 I am seriously considering going to android, and I hate their trash.

One Star Reviewers Must Be Idiots

    • Written by from Elkhorn

I have NEVER in 18 months had the magnetic end come loose from my laptop without some kind of reasonable force. It will hold when unsupported. It will hold when carefully moving the laptop when it's plugged in. Sure, if I pull it at a 90 degree angle or toss the laptop onto a bed or swivel around in a desk chair and run out of cable slack, it will separate, but it's designed to do that to protect not only the cable but the laptop itself. Anyone who expects more had better also be complaining about the fact that their car crumples when it's in an accident.

    Charger burning

    • Written by from halifax

I agree with everyone who has discussed the issue of our macbook pro charger burning itself. I noticed mine do this the other day when I saw that my charger wasn't charger my laptop. I played with the cord a bit to get a connection which I did, but then when I let go of it the wire would be bright and lots of smoke coming out. This happened in my dorm room at school so it has freaked me out now that it will happen with the new charger that I bought.
