Worked for 7 months then died

    • Written by from South Bend

The converter worked fine for about 7 months with a Magsafe 1 charger on a new laptop. Now it won't charge the battery. The Magsafe 1 charger still powers an older 15" MBP just fine, and a Magsafe 2 charger works on the new laptop. So it's not a problem with the laptop or the power. The converter itself is bad.

    Defective product

This small converter just does not work consistently. It wastes us time to figure out the charging problem and $ for it. Suggest never to buy this kind of defective product from Apple.

    this product is not good

    • Written by from Amsterdam

It was great when I got it, so I could charge my Macbook Pro Retina 15" late 2013 with my Thunderbolt display (which only has a magsafe 1 cable attached to it), no need for extra cables. For the first month or so it worked fine, then slowly, it started to show glitches. All of the sudden it would be losing connection or failing to charge and just keep it stable on (for example) 30% of battery. Detaching, reattaching, cleaning, firmly pressing, it had no effect. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. And this never happens when I attach it to the normal magsafe 2 adapter that came with my Macbook Pro.

Another annoying addition is that when one has a Thunderbolt display attached to its Macbook Pro, and the Macbook Pro loses its electricity feed, the attached display goes on and off, thinking that the Macbook Pro is being detached and attached. So when the magsafe converter fails to work, the Thunderbolt flickers... ARGH! And that for a 3500+ euro setup!

Yes it really is that bad

    • Written by from LA JOLLA

So some people can get this to work. I have a Macbook Pro Retina and the original magsafe2 frayed on me and I had to replace. My computer is just a little over a year old so I was a little upset about having to buy another adapter, so I bought an Apple original MagSafe from a computer repair store and this adapter. The tech said I would be fine. It has been an off again on again and now definitely OFF for sure nightmare. Of course when I took it to the shop was one of the days it decided to work. I am going to have to schlep back there and try to get my money back. I wish I had just bought another Magsafe2.

    Does Not Work As Designed

    • Written by from Kirkland

This has caused nothing but frustration and lost productivity for work -- this product slowly had increasing issues until now I cannot use it with a Thunderbolt Display and my 2014 MacBook Pro. This is terrible and I cannot charge my notebook for a presentation.

    Stopped working ~3 months

    • Written by from Coshocton

The converter just stopped working one night. I attempted to clean it, clean the computer outlet, wiggle it around - nothing. Ended up having to buy a whole new charger. Waste of cash. Don't get this converter. You're better off biting the bullet and purchasing a new charger or even go 3rd party.

    Doesn't charge consistently

    • Written by from Munhall

Sometimes it takes considerable fiddling to get my laptop to charge while plugged in. I use this product while at a desk, so I don't have "falling out" issues. I do, however, disconnect the laptop 2 or more times throughout the day and each time I have to worry about the battery recharging.

    Terrible product

    • Written by

After about 6 months, both MagSafe2 to MagSafe converters stopped charging my MacbookProRetina reliably. You have to tweak and wiggle and adjust it to get it to start charging. Forget about charging it on your lap. This only works on a flat desktop where once you get the angle just right, it will charge fine. Until you bump it slightly.

And just to be clear, I have tried this with a stack of different power adapters (which all work fine on my older Macbook), and with two different converters, so it isn't the adapter, but the converter design.

And the MBP charges fine 100% of the time with the MagSafe2 adapter that came with the Macbook. So I don't think it is dirt on the Macbook itself. It is either the lame $20 converter, or a very finicky connection on the Macbook that doesn't like the converter.

    doesn't work

    • Written by from Mississauga

It worked fine for a couple of months, but now it won't charge the battery -- same problem as a lot of people where it will maintain power, but not charge. I also have connection problems, like many others, where moving it around will make it disconnect.

Quite possibly one of the worst designed products IN THE WORLD

    • Written by from Harrisburg

The only way my computer will charge is if it is on a completely flat surface and not touched at all. I try to put it on my lap, charger falls out. I try to move it closer to me, charger false out. Anything I do makes the charger fall out. It's so frustrating. Who thought this up?

    Okay, rant over.

Like others have said before... just doesn't work... now even wiggles and reconnects not. Really has turned me sour on Apple as it seems their solution to when a problem is there is like everyone else's... deny and keep it a secret... if they were really living up to their brand image they'd find a solution and make it right for us... it's not like they don't have enough money in the bank

Doesn't work most of the time

    • Written by from Princeton

As many others have reviewed, after having this for a couple months, it no longer maintains a good connection, so that you need to constantly fiddle, flip, or move the adaptor around to actual maintain a connection that will power/charge the laptop. Happened to both converters I have, making the stockpile of MagSafe adaptors pretty useless. Not only a wasted $20, but makes all those others adaptors I own pretty useless as well ($100s).

Design flaw. Apple should recall and replace these devices.

    A very unreliable device

    • Written by from Valencia

I am truly disappointed with this device. The fact that I have to have it to charge my Air from my Thunderbolt display seems to be very poor product design. I might let that slide if it actually worked. Sometimes I get lucky and when I plug it in, my Air charges. Most of the time it takes fiddling with it to get a good connection. What's even more annoying is that sometimes the connection goes away and the only way I notice it to happen to look at the battery icon and see that I'm running on battery. Not sure how this device got past QA.

    Works sometimes

    • Written by from Dove Canyon

As others have posted, it does work, sometimes. After a few months I've had to adjust, tweak, reattach the converter to the power supply till it finally lights up. One out of 10 times, it will connect w/o a problem. But most times, I've had to play with it for a while. Very frustrating after a long day on the road. My only recourse is to buy extra power supplies and not reuse all the ones I've previously purchased for my old MBP's.

    Premature ejection! Premature 5-star reviews!

    • Written by from CEDAR FALLS

First, let me say why I need to use this device. Because I bought a $1000 Apple Thunderbolt Display. The Thunderbolt/power Y cable that is permanently connected (why might I ask is it not a removable cable so I can replace it one day?) to the Display has a MagSafe (1) connector. Well, the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter worked for about six months. I don't disconnect my late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina from the Display more than about 3-4 times a month. So the disconnection of the converter to MBPro is minimal! If that Converter doesn't work, the Display won't work with MBPro in clamshell mode! Seriously?! So I either have to fiddle with the connection until it does, or best solution is to connect a separate power cable (supplied with MBPro).

Dear Mr. Cook, your predecessor, Mr. Jobs, wouldn't stand for this kind of design flaw, nor quality control!

Dear 5-star reviewers, wait six months or less and you'll change your rating!

    Needs a redesign

    • Written by from Cambridge

1/5 stars, which represents how often the adapter works properly when plugged in. The rest of the time, it's either extremely fiddly and takes minutes to get it working or, more often, it stops working properly after some amount of time, and only powers the Macbook instead of charging it. This is coming off a 27" display to a 15" MBP.

    stopped charging battery

    • Written by from Oakland

Like many others, my MagSafe Converter is no longer able to charge the battery in my Macbook Pro Retina from the power cord on my Thunderbolt external monitor. It seems to be able to power my computer all day long, but won't put any juice into the battery while doing so (whereas a few months ago it could fill up a nearly-empty battery in just a couple hours). Running and charging battery via the intended MagSafe 2 cord is fine.

Like others who have written this adapter is poor. They stopped working or work only part of the time or you have to jiggle them and align perfectly. Very disappointing. Really should get zero stars
