Update your firmware drivers of your harddisk

Update your firmware drivers of your harddisk before wasting time with connection problems.
Many drives are NOT Mountain Lion compatible with the driver instaled on purchase date.

It worked for me and my 1 year old WD drive.

Only 3 stars because I hate cable solutions.

    works, but...

Works fine with digi 002 and focusrite saffire 24 audio interfaces.
BUT (and thats why only 3 stars):

Because thunderbolt only delivers 7w thru the FW adapter many bus powered FW-devices need an ac-adapter.

Not all FW800 to FW400 adapters are working with the thunderbolt adapter. Some of my adapters let go power through the cable but the interfaces for example are not recognized. Sonnet FW800 to 400 is working fine with apples thunderbolt to fw

No thunderbolt port next to the firewire?

It does what it's supposed to, but I don't understand why it doesn't have another thunderbolt port on the the firewire end, I can't connect two displays and still use firewire, unless I use the HDMI, but than I need another adapter. I thought one of the strong points of thunderbolt is the ability to daisy chain.

Firewire drives way slower through adapter

It works fine, but if you are currently using a Firewire drive with your non-retina macbook, be aware that using the adapter (required for retina macbook pro) makes the drive much slower, at least for large writes.

I copied a 32GB file to my WD MyPassport Studio external firewire drive at it took ~30min when copied from a Macbook Retina Pro 15" SSD (via adapter), compared to ~10min when copied from a early-2011 Macbook Pro 15" SSD (which has a much slower internal drive).

Works fine for data, is dicier for bus-powered devices

The adapter seems to work fine for devices that have their own power supply but i have had mixed results on bus powered interfaces / drives. I've tested the MOTU Ultralite Hybrid mk3 and Iomega eGo. They don't work via bus power. An old FireLite drive works fine via bus power. If you have devices that demand more, you may be SOL. It is a decent solution but isn't a true FireWire gateway.

With a Retina, its been a pain trying to work with just the USB ports.

Apple talked about this adapter 2 months ago), finally they have released & I can use my FW800 drives again & hook up to my MP.

Works great only 3 stars as Apple took so long to come out with it.

Finally something I can use my thunderbolt port for on my macbook air, BUT, I can only use it on a memory card reader because it doesn't supply enough power for my Lacie rugged hard drives. I have to keep using slowSB (USB). I thought this would make life easier for my macbook air, but unfortunately this supposedly amazing thunderbolt port continues to be quite useless for me.
