    The cold truth... No sentiments!

    • Written by from Spanish Town

As long as it is clear what you are and aren't getting, I believe everyone will be fine.

The ipad fits snuggly in the case period so it is very unclear what that fuss is about. The fabric used on the insides of the front cover which sits against the glass is of good quality. Magnets work well for the sleep and wake feature (N.B. wakes instantly but sleeps about 1.5 seconds after closed). Apple logo and the custom words that can be added to the case (if ordered from apple.com) are really very elegant. Ridges for folding and the hinges are sturdy.

Edges are sharp and may be uncomfortable to hold especially if it becomes necessary to grip tightly in landscape view (e.g. playing games on the iPad). Interestingly, these same sharp ridges will provide some bump protection for the edges of the iPad during light to moderate use. The front cover does NOT magnetically adhere to the back of the case when folded flat against the back for reading. This is especially annoying in landscape view mode as you have to consciously hold it there with your fingers while attempting to scroll with your thumb.

The rounding of the edges and a magnetic solution for sticking the front cover to the back of the smartcase while still being able to peel away the first flap to take pictures and videos are definite upgrades this product needs. Truthfully, Apple does not the spend time to improve their accessories as fast as they do their main products so Lord knows when these oversights will be addressed (and you know when they do the cost will go up!)

I knew of these nuances when I tested the product and purchased it anyway as I believe the smartcase couples well with the iPad. Aftermarket versions tend to be bulky or of inferior build quality. Bottomline guys, you get pay for... Peace!

    Very Pleased

    • Written by from Manalapan

This case fits my iPad (4th generation) quite well and was real easy to insert. All the openings line up properly and the iPad sleeps and wakes as expected. The feel of the material is also very nice. The color is not as dark as pictured (a little more industrial looking than expected), but that's a small point. While I believe this product should probably be priced less, I'm still very pleased and glad I bought it.

    Not perfect, but not bad

    • Written by from ALTO

If you follow the instructions for inserting the iPad it fits easily and snugly.
As opposed to what others have reported, the magnetic closure works just fine in the open or closed positions.

One design flaw is that it is a little tricky to open since the edges are cut too short. The Marware version was a nicer fit, but only a minor issue as far as I'm concerned. Since the edges are not as round as I'd like, I carry it by the spine edge which is smooth.

I bought the grey cover and it looks terrific.

Perfect Fit - Tested on iPad 2 and iPad 4

    • Written by from Dunwoody

Not sure what all the bad reviews are about...

Fits my brand new iPad 4 perfectly. I tested it on my wife's iPad 2, and it also fits perfectly. You have to finesse the cover's rubber perimeter around the iPad when initially setting it in, which can take a few minutes, but once it's on it's perfect.

Superior to the smart cover because it protects the back casing of the iPad, plus you don't have to deal with the whole magnet thing. Contrary to other reviews, the fit is tight enough and still incorporates the form and function of all the iPad's features (small perforated holes where the speaker is, camera hole, etc.

The name says it all - it's a smart case, and it's only $10 more than the smart cover. You can't go wrong.

    Smart case vs Smart Cover

    • Written by from Victoria

I have used both the Apple cover plus aftermarket back cover and the new smart case. I do prefer the former based solely on the ease of opening it. The smart case is much more difficult to open. It requires you to use a fingernail to pry it open. The older combination of cover and protective back cover was by comparison much easier. My wife has an aftermarket case but the magnetic switch to put the iPad to sleep doesn't always work. It too is much easier to open. Advice, try them in the store.

    Not worth it.

Doesn't look very good, feels cheap, and hard to open. Kind of disappointed.

    Minor flaw = big pain

    • Written by from san diego

The case fits and looks great. Don't buy it unless you have long and strong finger nails. It is a pain to open. I've had mine for a month or so and am thinking of crazy glueing something to the front flap to open it.

    Great for protection

    • Written by from Southport

I just picked up this case with an iPad4. With my previous iPad I had a Zagg cover on the back and a Smart Cover to protect the screen. This is a far superior solution.

Pros: Other reviewers have complained about fit, but my iPad fits snugly in the case. In fact it took a bit of work to get the iPad in. It is lined throughout with the same material that was inside the Smart Cover so I'm expecting not to see scratches when removed. The case is thin so there's not a bulk issue at all. It's also soft so I find it easier to hold for an extended period. The cover was $50 which seems high unless you price Zagg ($35) and a Smart Cover individually.

Cons: Like the case I had for my iPad first generation, the seam where the back cover and the neoprene edge (that holds the iPad in place) come together, there is a sharp edge which is uncomfortable to the touch. I wish Apple had designed this with a rounded edge-maybe in the next generation..

If you are looking for a low bulk solution to protect your iPad, I would recommend this.

    Ideal, used wisely

    • Written by from Skokie

This is a superbly thin and convenient case for use around the house and for "genteel" traveling. But when handing over my iPad 3 to kids, or for using on rougher travel, I prefer my thicker, sturdier, iSkin hard case, which is also more stable for movie viewing.

Uncomfortable to hold because of unfinished edges

    • Written by from London

Unfinished edges around the lip of the case make this really uncomfortable to hold if used for more than 5 mins. It also doesnt hold my ipad 4th gen securely. Very disappointing quality in total contrast to my fantastic ipad. Avoid.

    What a difference!

    • Written by from Dallas

When I bought my iPad in April Apple only offered the Smart cover. i wanted to protect the sides and back of the iPad so I purchased a third party case with 'smart cover' technology. It was heavy, cumbersome and the 'smart cover' was not always that smart. I finally just bought the Apple Smart case and it is beautiful, works great and doesn't add any bulk or noticeable weight to the iPad. It's terrific and very high quality.

Not what I expected from Apple

    • Written by from Sunrise

I'm disappointed with this case. Yes it does fit properly with my 4th gen iPad and yes it does provide decent protection. However from a design point of view, this case is just not "Smart".
The edges are kind of sharp making it uncomfortable to hold. And the cover when flipped to the back will not magnetically stick, leaving it loose and unsecured. I expected more thought to go into designing this product. Not happy.

    Like the smart case

    • Written by from Laval

Well, I had a bit of hard time to get my iPad fit into the case. Once it was in, it shaped the iPad perfectly while protecting both sides, the screen and the back. I strongly recommend it especially if you have kids

    Form Fit and Function

    • Written by from Lake Peekskill

This case is a nice looking iteration of the original iPad case but of course that is subjective. It has nice curves that compliment the iPad with cut outs for the speaker, mute switch, headphones and 30 pin connector. The accented volume button with plus and minus graphics is a nice touch as is the power button. The apple logo is also nice.

Here is where the smart case fails miserably. The case does not fit snug, it some times pops out if held in a certain way and there are gaps big enough between the iPad and the case that you can see right through. I tried this case with both an iPad 2 and iPad 3rd generation which is bigger and to my surprise they both fit terribly. This is a big FAIL. FYI I've tried two different smart cases purchased months apart to see if I just got a bad case.

The smart case does it's job, it protects the front and back of the iPad, the stand seems to work well on flat even surfaces and it turns the iPad on and off as intended. The buttons as described early are a nice addition. The edges of the case are hard and seemingly sharp, it is very uncomfortable to hold and fails in this respect. Users have also complained of magnetic hold of the cover being week and therefore disengaging easily but have also complained about the cover being difficult to open because it sits flush with the case and requires finger nails to lift it open, I agree with the complaints. So for function it does what is intended but falls short, leaves much to be desired. So it kinda Fails in my book.

I hope this review is helpful to buyers.

    It doesn't fit!

    • Written by from Maple Plain

The Smart Cover doesn't fit my iPad 2. It's lose like baggy pants and I fear my iPad isn't secure. Loved the Smart Cover but not happy with the case at all.not even sure the cover will close tight enough for the sleep mode to activate.

    Apple Smart Case

    • Written by from Lincoln

Just received this case today. Got it in Grey. Would like to have it in Black but does not look like it is being offered in Black. It fits nice and not very bulky. The only thing is it is hard for me to open the cover, maybe it is because I have not used it yet. First time having it engraved and didn't realize it to be really small.
