    Disappointing case

    • Written by from Austin

I REALLY wanted to like the smart case, but two things killed it for me. The case feels great in your hands while you're holding in in portrait mode, but when you use it in landscape mode, as you would to watch a movie, the edges are surprisingly uncomfortable to hold for any length of time.

The second thing that bugged me was the cover. It fits very nicely and is of course held down by magnets, but it's a bit tricky to get your fingernail under it to open it. Especially for our 5 year old son.

The case is a perfect fit for the device and looks fantastic on it. But in normal use there are better, more comfortable options out there at a lower price point as well...

    Majorly let down

    • Written by from Amery

I bought it protect my new ipad and it hasn't protected my ipad very well, one corners majorly dinged up. The case is also falling apart at the "seams" around the edge where the front and back. It isn't stable when it's propped up towards vertical and it doesn't fit my ipad very well either.
I'm definately let down seeing as this is a $50 apple product

    Hate It

    • Written by from Miramar

Let me start by saying... By the leather smart case. It gets dirty by simply putting it into your bag/ knapsack. The flap is an issue to open for easy use and when folded in to use as a stand it isn't steady at all. Don't get this product. Pay a little more but you will be satisfied with the leather smart case

Would Steve Jobs approve this case? I think not.

    • Written by from Fayetteville

The feel of the case is lovely and I love the slimness. However, I have now tried three of these cases, only one of which truly fit the iPad. The folks at the Apple store in town were skeptical and reluctant to accept a return, but in fact, the other two cases gapped badly on the sides when the cover was folded back. When the cover is folded into the handy-looking triangle that's shown in the pictures, the triangle doesn't really hold its position in either horizontal or vertical position; it tends to slip around. Finally, the cover can be jiggled loose if the iPad is stuffed in with books, folders, etc. in your travel bag, so don't depend on it to stay in sleep mode. Better to power it off when traveling. I'm keeping this third one, but I'm disappointed.

Too sharp + screen tips over when standing

    • Written by from Lidingö

The smart case is substandard, not worthy of the Apple logo!
It is too sharp around the edges, which makes it uncomfortable to hold and the lid is a bit difficult to open (almost requires use of nails to get a grip of the lid).
But the most frustrating/surprising part is that it is NOT made to stand up properly. In its default setting the screen tips over when you try to make the iPad stand. So you have to manipulate the stand a bit to make it work, which means it is still not fully stable. Very surprising that this problem was not discovered before taken to mass production.

Having just switched from the magnetic cover (which keeps falling off and offers no drop protection) to the smart case I am thinking of switching back, or to something completely different. In the end, the original black iPad 1 case is still the best allround solution Apple has come up with so far...

This is probably one of the BIGGEST mistake of apple so far, the magnet looses its power and obviously ipad easily falls down and eventually its broken, guess what ? you will have to buy another one, may be thats the idea hey? common, i recommend to all please dont even think of buying this, my ipad mini is broken just because of this case. I said Best in my title just because it is best at breaking your ipads just like mine ;)

    Terrible case

    • Written by from Rochester

This thing falls over all the time and you hear this sickening thunk of your 700 dollar apple product hitting whatever surface it was supposed to be protected from. It stains with pen ink really easily and the stain won't come out (which is bad for students). There is basically one level at which you can prop this product and it will fall. I've had it for five months and the edge of my Ipad already broke through the case. Go with a Belkin case.

    $50, really??

    • Written by from Madison

Bought it sight unseen. I mean come on, its Apple and I expected it to be pretty darn nice. In all fairness, the iPad fits really well in it and I like that part, but the corners are sharp, the hinge doesn't look like it will last, the cover kinda covers down, but doesn't stay very well and it feels like a cheap piece of cardboard. Will return and get a plastic back from someone else and an Apple smart cover with the good hinge instead. Very disappointing to buy an Apple branded product like this. Never before have I been this let down by them. If it were $15 or $20 from a third party I could go with it, but not $50 from Apple themselves.

    Not the Expected Apple Quality

    • Written by from Cupertino

I bought a light gray smart case for my new ipad and was very pleased with the protection it offered. I noticed that the entire cover was getting dirty very fast and started to leave markings on the screen. This case has been used slightly heavily and just started falling apart after about 5-6 months of use. Not the quality I expected considering the price. I had to order a new one because this indeed protects the ipad, as mine looks like new. This time I'm going to go with a dark gray one. I just wish they would do something about the quality of the case.

    It's Okay for Now

    • Written by from Chicago

Just picked up a new iPad and grabbed this case. Wanted something to protect it initially and it's not too bad. The fit is nice and tight and the material seems pretty sturdy. Not sure it's 49 bucks worth but I have 2 weeks as a return window. I do plan on upgrading to the iPad 5 (couldn't hold out though...been on the original until today) and this along with a Speck screen protector should keep it in good shape in prep for a resell.

    Bottomline...meh ;-)

Love it! Not sure where the haters are coming from.

I find this cover to be awesome! Recently purchased an iPad 3 and received the case a couple of days later... What a huge difference in how to hold & protect my device!
I've only had it a few days, but love it.
I am really struggling to figure out all of the negative reviews. I wonder if those folks have properly seated their iPad into the cover? This is my first iPad, so I'm not sure if the diameter is different on the other generations?
All of the outer buttons line up perfectly with the holes in the cover... As they should!
Some reviews said that the "cover" is kind of hard to open if you don't have fingernails to lift the edge. That one I can somewhat understand, but I have done some "testing" & have found that if you slide the pad of your finger underneath the corner it actually lifts quite easily. I really think it is a matter of finessing it if you don't have fingernails.
I would recommend this cover for the iPad 3, because that's what I have. Again, not sure what the dimensions are for older/newer versions. Find it hard to believe that there are so many issues with this case from the negative reviewers:)

For $50 I thought this "smart" case would be a good idea. The case doesn't do anything smart. There is a small magnet that turns the screen off when you close it. That's all this does, it's very flimsy and all the folds permanently crease. It get dirty from anything and the "fabric" aspect of it makes it hard to clean. I take ridiculously good care of my things and this case is ripping on the inside corner where it's creased (it shouldn't even be able to crease there) I would say stay away from this item and spend you $50 on something that will function well and protect your iPad. I have only had it for 2-3 months and if I could rate zero stars I would .

    The good and the bad

    • Written by from Agia Paraskevi

Bought the case in Sept 2012 to protect the ipad2 from my 3 children. First of all does good in a fall, the ipad corners were protected. Bad news that in Feb2013 it started to become unglued. By April of this year three sides have completely come undone. The device could not sit in the case, just slipping and sliding about. The thing that upsets me the most is for the price tag, i expected something a little more durable. Now maybe i got a bad batch, or maybe that what happens to it after time. I will be looking for a more durable case.

The magnetic connection comes off too easily. Because of this...my iPad slipped from the cover and shattered on impact. Definitely not worth the money. Replacing it with something more secure once I get my iPad repaired!!

Amazing! The perfect ~50 gift for ANY iPad owner

    • Written by from Mansfield

upon the release of the iPad 2 and its fixes of the iPad 1's kinks, I thought it would make the perfect computer for my mother, and it just so happened to be coming out on her birthday, so I bought her one and a few accessories to go along with it, among them, the smart cover, something I felt was essential. But she was looking for a bid more protection and bought an ugly traveling-size sleeve for it because with the smart cover you cannot have a regular case as well. The Smart Case solved this problem and knocks the cheap knockoffs out of the water. DO NOT buy one of those iLuv or whatever magnetic cases for ~$20, get the real deal, you'll thank me later. ;)

    The idea is solid...

    • Written by from PORT COLBORNE

I got this case in January with my iPad and I must admit I was pleased at first, but as I used it the problems became more and more apparent.
First off I noticed that the cover did not hug the screen very well, it would shift in my backpack, turn the screen on and the iPad would be dead before morning classes.
Secondly, the cut outs are all slightly off. I had to use a knife from my garage to widen the charger slot so that it would fit apple's standard lightning cable. Also the hole for the slide at the side is off, and you have to really dig a nail in to get the switch to the "off" position.
Third thing, the way the cover folds should be improved. The keyboard mode is a bit shallow for my liking, however i did manage to take notes on it everyday, but the "movie mode" is terrible. On the Smart Cover it held the iPad at a slight angle to allow stability, but with the this case, it's pretty much straight up, and falls over constantly.
Finally, the build quality is terrible already the hinge is starting to tear at the edges, as well as all the folds on the cover, and the main body of the case is starting to split at the edges.

In short, tis is a solid idea for a case, but it needs some serious refinements before it should wear the apple logo.
