Magnet SMart Cover - Be Careful

New Ipad3, bought smart cover that only covers front with magnetized attachment. Watch out!!! I picked up the Ipad (thumb on cover rest of fingers on back) and the magnet cover came off and allowing my Day Old Ipad to hit concrete. I've had my Ipad1 from just shortly after they came out and never dropped it. Real disappointed when Best Buy told me sorry nothing they could do, i didn't buy their protection package (which was expensive compared to Apple's).

Went to Apple store and they replaced it with nominal fee plus gave me deal on Apple plan for two years. Apple I appreciate it, Best Buy go #*&*!^ yourself.

Acceptable for utility, although could have been designed much better.

What I expected: Smart case that fits my iPad snugly like a polyurethane glove. This way my iPad is fully protected from minor scratches, etc.

What I got: A loose case with a smart cover glued on, and from time to time, my iPad spilling out from the case when shifted from vertical-upright to horizontal-upright position, and vice-versa.

So far, very much a enjoying my new IPad but after getting hands on the smart cover I must say that the value for money just isn't there. It does have some neat feature but just not worth the money. What apple needs to develop is something that has similar neat features but more importantly something that protects our little treasure from accidental breakage. Your basically putting a frail geek into a rugby match :-)

I really question the human race after reading all of the reviews for the smart cover. EVERY supposed negative listed here (save one which I'll address) is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT to this product. Doesn't have a back cover? Not supposed to--BUY ONE. Doesn't protect from falls? NOT SUPPOSED TO. Doesn't keep from someone dropping? NOT SUPPOSED TO. My God, not only is it not supposed to, no one anywhere. especially Apple, ever promised it would. So why would any intelligent human assume it would or should??

Only one critique listed here is even relevant to the product--price. $49 may or may not be too expensive, that is debatable. The cover works and does just what is promised, it has drawbacks like most things, hence my 4 stars, but overall it works--just like it is supposed to.

    Not a well-thought-out Apple product

I don't know why anybody would be satisfied paying $45 for this cover. I expected a quality product, as that's the reputation of Apple, but this one really let me down.

    1. Like everyone else is saying, the cover does not include backside protection (for $45 you'd think it would).
    2. My biggest beef is that the cover detaches itself way too easily. For example, after a day at work I put my iPad in my bag and a simple rub of the cover on the inside of the bag makes the cover come off.

If you're somebody looking for durability in a cover, this is definitely not the right cover for you. Hoping for better solutions from Apple in the future!

This product does not provide any type of protection for drops. My IPAD dropped on the ground and the cover popped right off. IPAD is 10 days old no Applecare.

Nice design, typically Apple. Sleek and simple, easy to put on and take off. Nice feature that allows the iPad to lock when closed and wakes when opened. Would be nice to have protection on the backside as well. Feels good on the fingers, both the polyurethane outside and the felt material on the inside. Dont waste your money on the leather one. Definately overpriced, but what can u do?! Nice options with color, wish there were more though. Overall, I am very satisfied with this product.

    But is it worth $40?

    • Written by from Ballston Lake

Here's a poser for you: we have a product that does what it's advertised to do. It does it well. I use it all the time. So, it's a good, usable product that should be highly recommended. But is it worth $40? I guess the answer to that question depends on how you're likely to use your iPad. If you're carrying it around a lot outside of your home/workplace, you might be better served with a more substantial cover. However, if you're using your iPad essentially in one location and want to protect it from run-of-the mill jostling (and you want the convenience of using the opening of the cover to wake your iPad), it's probably worth ponying up the 40 bucks. Your call!

    Pretty good

Well first off I am going to state that the smart cover is not intended to protect the outside body of the iPad itself. I think people are forgetting to cover in their reviews that the product is not a case by any means. It's a COVER.

But anyway. It works as it is advertised to do. Cover the screen, and turn the screen on when you unfold it, and lock it down once the cover is closed. Although I do not believe when they it is suppost to "clean" your screen when you cover it back up. Even though it does cover it from dust and dirt.

The light gray color also goes great with the new white iPad. I have the smart cover on the front to protect the screen and a black case on the back and it goes great.

It might be overpriced. But it works very well with a back case.

    Major issues

#1 - Only worked for a few days, then I noticed it wasn't sleeping...therefore draining the battery it seemed.
#2 - Cover at hinge point not too secure.
#3 - Doesn't fold back with precision. Always having to fiddle with fold to get it to settle properly.
#4 - The felt texture attracts every little bit of dirt. So it feels like you're about to cover up your iPad screen with a dirty cover.
#5 - I agree that the backside scratches easily since this cover does not protect the backside in any fashion. Beware of the surface you place your iPad on!

Well, I like how it wakes up and goes to sleep, but I wish it covered the back. Also, when you try to stand up your ipad for facetime, it collapses. The magnets cannot support the weight of the ipad. If you don't use it for a facetime stand, it works well. However, i would not purchase it again for $40. That is extremely overpriced.

The iPad isn't the same without this cover. It stays on and comes back off effortlessly. It's also really useful in its two stand positions. It's not a full blown case that can protect your iPad from anything but for those looking to protect their screen and show off the design it's a great choice.

    Smart Cover for Smart Users

Ugh I'm tired of reading other people's comments trashing this product so I wanted to help the defense....

It's apparent a lot of those people griping about the product don't bother to read the product descriptions or even look at the pictures where the first major design characteristic is apparent. It is NOT meant to protect the back; it is only designed to protect the screen. Apple never states this and the videos and pictures are more than enough to let us know this. It WILL protect the back if you fold it over itself when using the iPad.

Also, it is NOT meant for heavy duty use but, rather, more like something to prop the iPad up for ease of usage while typing or viewing. If you try to pick up your iPad with a lightweight cover that's magnetically attached (aka a Smart Cover), don't be surprised by the consequences. If you take care of your iPad then you should be fine and won’t have to rely on a thin piece of fabric and some embedded magnets to do the taking care of for you. Apple products were probably not designed for you then, if that’s not the case.

Sure, accidents happen all of us but don’t blame the Smart Cover for it. If you want great protection AND still want it to be slim like the Smart Cover, then good luck to you! (and let me know where to find it). I’m sure Apple is working on perfecting this or other covers as I type.

I bought a light gray Smart Cover for my new iPad (3rd Gen) and I LOVE it so far. I did buy it for aesthetic looks because, like Steve Jobs (RIP), I wanted something minimalistic great to show off my iPad and its sleekness, that can also give it a fighting chance against dust, fingerprints, and scratches on the screen (not me tearing the cover off or carelessly leaving it at the mercy of my lap). I also bought a third-party sleeve/pocket for it to so I can store it inside when I’m taking the new iPad to work, school, and in between, I suggest that.

My only concern is that the magnets won’t always keep the Smart Cover closed, but then they ARE magnets and I knew that when I bought it. I’m surprised at how the magnets don’t mess up the electronics inside! Anyway this would probably be the only legit concern and would give it a 4-star rating....but am giving it a 5-star just because it's Apple. There I said it.

The way the Smart Cover adheres, is very clever and one has to give acclaim to the industrial designers at Apple who came up with the idea. It works very well. I am concerned about the back side, an area that is exposed and somewhat slippery. Since this is just a cover, and not a case, I can't fault it for that. As a cover, it does the job. I bought the lt gray for the white New iPad. Very pleased overall.

Innovative, prevents scratches, really bad colors!

The smart cover is more scratch protection than anything else. That said, the auto on functionality of the cover conjures the idea of a laptop being wakened from sleep mode or a book being opened and ready to read. It humanizes the iPad in an intriguing way that goes beyond protection. It won't protect against any serious accidents nor does it protect the back, but third-party providers have covered those two problems admirably. And yes, it's true, the magnet does detach fairly easily. However, it works as a very steady video or typing stand, and one shouldn't be rough with the iPad anyway!

What I want to know is...WHY DID APPLE CANCEL THE ORANGE? It was the best color among the polyurethane options, which are generally insipid. The worst colors in a long time from Apple.
