Not up to Apple's usual high design standards

Magnetic bar doesn't hold the cover on very well. It's always coming off. Difficult to fold the cover for a stand, even after a month of use. Back and sides are unprotected. Piece of junk.

Falls over on level tables all the time

I have the light grey cover and it gets very dirty on the fuzzy side.
I leave the cover on all the time unless I am reading in the portrait mode, then you have to take it off, if you leave it folded in the stand position and try to hold it with one hand it will fall off and you drop your iPad. If you stand it on a table in the landscape mode it tends to fall over with a bang that makes me think it broke the iPad. It will fall with the slightest touch or sometimes when it's just sitting by itself.
It sure is a poor design, but it's the only thing I have.

Great to look at but horrible to use

The cover looks nice but its nearly useless. First, there is not vertical orientation stand. Also in vertical, it only fits on the left so if you hold the ipad with your left hand you have to hold the awkward feeling cover as well. It doesn't fit on the right side at all. Next, if you are trying to use the horizontal stand anywhere except a table it won't work. There are two horizontal stand modes and neither works well if you are sitting it flat on a table. The more upright horizontal stand ends up falling over simply because there isn't enough weight or size in the cover. If you're laying in bed and try to prop it up it just won't work. It falls backward instead. The flatter stand barely stays in place and the cover snaps off regularly. Ultimately this cover is a useless waste of money. It looks pretty but it doesn't work in the simplest of uses other than a tabletop. Save your money and buy a more solid third party cover/case.

I got this cover and the new iPad when they came out a few months ago. The cover will not stay on. Last week, I dropped the iPad (another story) and the cover flew off in a different direction from the iPad. I am looking on Amazon for a sturdier, more reliable cover.

Pros and Cons of the magnetic cover

If you only use your iPad in side the home or office this cover with a turn on turn off feature may work for you.
However if you purchased an iPad 3 so that you could take photos and video and carry it everywhere this is not your best choice in a cover. To take a photo you hold your iPad with your left hand...the side of the iPad with the magnetic strip and cover connection. You have to have your right hand free to take a photo or video. The magnetic strip is not a secure strong hold and even though you are holding over the folded cover and your hand is on the iPad, if the magnet releases, you will lose your iPad to the floor!!!
The iPad continues to function but the glass screen is destroyed, a rather costly experience to say the least.
My recommendation to Apple would be an unbreakable glass screen or a much better designed cover, lightweight yet able to fit on the charger stand without removal. It is not logical to have to remove a cover to charge the device.....mine is in and out of the stand constantly.
With such a wonderful piece if equipment someone should be able to design a cover that works so that all the functions of the iPad can be easily used without fear of destroying the device.

    Very poor design and materials

This cover blocks the buttons and screws up the camera. It makes it hard to use the charger. The edges are sharp. The original cover seems like a whole different cover. Please try this product in the store before you purchase.

The only thing good about this is the fact it puts your iPad to sleep. It constantly falls off. I have been using it since Christmas and I pretty much hate it. I did buy a different cover but it doesn't put it to sleep as well. Ugh!

Perfect product at first, but after two months it no longer stuck well to my iPad and it didn't serve it's purpose. Turned out to be a waste.

Not up to Apple quality. I tried it for a few days. It did not fit properly or fold right. It did not provide a stable base for the iPad in upright position. I went back to my leather Apple cover and a third party back cover.

Magnet SMart Cover - Be Careful

New Ipad3, bought smart cover that only covers front with magnetized attachment. Watch out!!! I picked up the Ipad (thumb on cover rest of fingers on back) and the magnet cover came off and allowing my Day Old Ipad to hit concrete. I've had my Ipad1 from just shortly after they came out and never dropped it. Real disappointed when Best Buy told me sorry nothing they could do, i didn't buy their protection package (which was expensive compared to Apple's).

Went to Apple store and they replaced it with nominal fee plus gave me deal on Apple plan for two years. Apple I appreciate it, Best Buy go #*&*!^ yourself.

This product does not provide any type of protection for drops. My IPAD dropped on the ground and the cover popped right off. IPAD is 10 days old no Applecare.

#1 - Only worked for a few days, then I noticed it wasn't sleeping...therefore draining the battery it seemed.
#2 - Cover at hinge point not too secure.
#3 - Doesn't fold back with precision. Always having to fiddle with fold to get it to settle properly.
#4 - The felt texture attracts every little bit of dirt. So it feels like you're about to cover up your iPad screen with a dirty cover.
#5 - I agree that the backside scratches easily since this cover does not protect the backside in any fashion. Beware of the surface you place your iPad on!

The iPad Smart Cover isn't so smart! My smart cover keeps coming detached from the iPad. The magnet intended to keep it attached is not strong enough. When I picked up my iPad today the cover slipped off and the iPad landed face down on asphalt. The Smart Cover is so Smart it caused my a $348 to have my iPad swapped for a refurbished. Apple I expect better from you, your own associates said the cover was safe even though I questioned how thin it was and how frail it seemed. One of your managers told me today how sorry they were as they would have not sold me the product. A huge shame on you for not backing up your products. I want my money back for my replaced iPad and my Smart Cover that was so "safe" DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

    Smart Covers get dumb fast

I purchased a few of these for iPads I purchased for myself and as gifts. Yeesh. They leave the vulnerable back exposed. And the magnet is not a secure hold. My iPad slipped out of my bag when I was getting into the car, I grabbed to retrieve it and the smart cover let go, so I have a less than new looking iPad which is frustrating since the equipment is costly! Another time I was on the sofa reading and the "smart" cover let go and the iPad fell on the tile floor and there is damage to the corner. However, the iPad seems to be pretty durable because I have no problem with the machine itself, despite its two falls. I searched online and wound up getting another brand (expensive yes!) but they are really, really nice. I love the other brand's iPhone cover with the wristlet; great for letting you carry just the phone with you.

This is not a protective cover. My I pad slipped out of my hands and hit the corner of the counter. The magnetic cover flipped up and the screen smashed!!! Even under warranty this is costing me 400 dollars. The iPad needs more protection.

I'm sorry but it's one product I feel falls short

I have to say this is one apple product that just doesn't seem to work well. After selecting my iPad, the person helping me informed me I could select a cover (if needed) while she pulled the product from the back room. I was looking at some full wrap around covers based on greater piece of mind. Upon returning the lady informed me that I could only get this new cover because it's the only one available for the iPad 2. That was my only option for a cover after asking her questions about it. I got the cover and immediately the second person helping me setup the iPad could not get the cover to mount. I guess this should have been my first sign. The cover routinely causes the iPad to fall over if I have to touch the screen on the top. If I hand the iPad to someone for review the folded cover is the first thing to fall off. On top of all that the magnet that hold it in place has worn off the coating from the iPad.

    Overpriced Piece of Junk!!

Received this as a gift for Christmas along with an iPad2. I am appalled that Apple would be charging this much for a useless cover that won't protect your iPad, terribly unstable to use to prop up the unit and overall pretty much worthless. I felt terrible for my girlfriend once she saw what she paid hard earned money for and talked into buying at the Apple Store. Apple should be ashamed of themselves for selling such a piece of junk. Oh and the box has a warning that the color will wear off. It goes back to the store tomorrow.
