It gets beat up after a while

    • Written by from Sun Prairie

Here are my observations of having the Smart Cover after a few months.

The edging (the minted plastic or whatever on the entire outer edge of the product, to keep everything together) started peeling off. After a while pieces of the edging would peel off altogether, causing the problem that my Smart Cover is literally falling apart. On the screen cover, the entire outer edging has peeled off, and now the inside lining is fraying and coming off as well, meaning so are the magnets. When it got to the point of one of the magnets actually came off, we tried to superglue it back on. HEEYY guess what? Now it doesn't work.

Along with that, the flap that keeps your iPad in the case is tearing off from the rest of the case, so now my iPad is insecure in the case.

    Worked for a while

When I first got my red Smart Cover it was great with the magnetic connection to my iPad 3rd gen. It even cut off the screen for me once I put the cover on so it was great. Hadn't had any problems for a long time. After about 10 months of having my iPad and Smart Cover it started to mess up my iPad screen. When I would put the Smart Cover on and take it off sometimes the screen went blank and sometimes it would work fine. So I decided to not use the Smart Cover for a few days and my iPad was fine but as soon as I put it back on my screen went completely white and my iPad was officially considered broke. I loved the cover until this happened. Due to my warranty I received a new iPad in 3 days but I will be getting a case that is non magnetic this time.

Magnetic bar doesn't hold the cover on very well. It's always coming off. Difficult to fold the cover for a stand, even after a month of use. Back and sides are unprotected. Piece of junk.

Falls over on level tables all the time

I have the light grey cover and it gets very dirty on the fuzzy side.
I leave the cover on all the time unless I am reading in the portrait mode, then you have to take it off, if you leave it folded in the stand position and try to hold it with one hand it will fall off and you drop your iPad. If you stand it on a table in the landscape mode it tends to fall over with a bang that makes me think it broke the iPad. It will fall with the slightest touch or sometimes when it's just sitting by itself.
It sure is a poor design, but it's the only thing I have.

Great to look at but horrible to use

The cover looks nice but its nearly useless. First, there is not vertical orientation stand. Also in vertical, it only fits on the left so if you hold the ipad with your left hand you have to hold the awkward feeling cover as well. It doesn't fit on the right side at all. Next, if you are trying to use the horizontal stand anywhere except a table it won't work. There are two horizontal stand modes and neither works well if you are sitting it flat on a table. The more upright horizontal stand ends up falling over simply because there isn't enough weight or size in the cover. If you're laying in bed and try to prop it up it just won't work. It falls backward instead. The flatter stand barely stays in place and the cover snaps off regularly. Ultimately this cover is a useless waste of money. It looks pretty but it doesn't work in the simplest of uses other than a tabletop. Save your money and buy a more solid third party cover/case.

I got this cover and the new iPad when they came out a few months ago. The cover will not stay on. Last week, I dropped the iPad (another story) and the cover flew off in a different direction from the iPad. I am looking on Amazon for a sturdier, more reliable cover.

    Well below Apple's typical standards

I bought this for $40 expecting a case living up to Apple's extraordinary standards.
What I received was a piece of junk I think I'll return.

The hinge is wobbly and the iPad feels like it will fall over face-forward when in the upright position.

The holes for the switch and headphone jack are not centered, making them difficult to access.

But worst of all... When you open the case, I would have expected the flap to magnetically stick to the back so that I can hold one-handed without half the flap hanging down. That just looks stupid and gets in the way.

Better advice: buy the Smart Cover and the Belkin plastic back with the embedded magnet. That combination actually had some thought put into it.

Really Apple!? You can do better. And I expect you. Steve would have as well.

Perfect match for my iPad 2

This light grey smart cover looks great with the silver/grey color on the back of the iPad. And I really like the way it works ... very creative of Apple & an excellent example of how this company thinks outside the box. Now that I've used it for a while, I can't imagine having an iPad without this smart cover. This cover feels great to the touch too, soft, velvety, yet grippy.

By the way, Belkin makes a slim "Snap Shield" cover for the back of the iPad that works great with this smart cover, if you worry about scratching the aluminum back. Might be cheaper to just go with the Apple smart case though.

Pros and Cons of the magnetic cover

    • Written by from Saratoga

If you only use your iPad in side the home or office this cover with a turn on turn off feature may work for you.
However if you purchased an iPad 3 so that you could take photos and video and carry it everywhere this is not your best choice in a cover. To take a photo you hold your iPad with your left hand...the side of the iPad with the magnetic strip and cover connection. You have to have your right hand free to take a photo or video. The magnetic strip is not a secure strong hold and even though you are holding over the folded cover and your hand is on the iPad, if the magnet releases, you will lose your iPad to the floor!!!
The iPad continues to function but the glass screen is destroyed, a rather costly experience to say the least.
My recommendation to Apple would be an unbreakable glass screen or a much better designed cover, lightweight yet able to fit on the charger stand without removal. It is not logical to have to remove a cover to charge the device.....mine is in and out of the stand constantly.
With such a wonderful piece if equipment someone should be able to design a cover that works so that all the functions of the iPad can be easily used without fear of destroying the device.

    Great for its purpose

I've been using this cover for three months now. I left it attached to my iPad for all this time and I have not had any issues with it.

Contrary to many negative reviews in this page, it's never scratched the metallic back surface of my iPad, neither I had it unattaching from the device inside a backpack nor while I was using it as a stand for watching movies. Also, I can't see how the smart cover could possibly make it difficult to charge the device. The hinges are nowhere near the 30 pin connector port.

If your smart cover presents any of the above problems, it's faulty and you should replace it in the nearest apple store.

My only concern is that it seems to be losing its magnetic strength over time. I'm not sure if I have a faulty smart cover, I'll see how it goes and will surely be swiping for a new one if it comes to a point I am no longer able to suspend my iPad by pulling it from the cover.

An issue particularly related to the white cover is that it gets dirty over time; even slightly dark stains are very noticeable, so you better learn to wash it periodically.

This cover blocks the buttons and screws up the camera. It makes it hard to use the charger. The edges are sharp. The original cover seems like a whole different cover. Please try this product in the store before you purchase.

The only thing good about this is the fact it puts your iPad to sleep. It constantly falls off. I have been using it since Christmas and I pretty much hate it. I did buy a different cover but it doesn't put it to sleep as well. Ugh!

Not bad, but not great either. Stability Problems.

I just purchased and installed my new Smart Cover for my iPad 2. It was a little awkward to snap into the case and, while it looks sharp and fits ok, I seriously question its function as a stand, particularly when the iPad is being stood upright (i.e., for movie watching). It is VERY unstable in this position and I am concerned about it toppling over (forward) at the slightest bump of nudge. I may end up having to return the new cover if this problem persists after I break in the cover. Buyer beware.

There is no reason to hate this accessory at all. I just bought one for my new iPad i just bought, and it is wonderful! It is to put on and it kind of cleans the screen. I also love the stand/keyboard angles the smart cover provides. Overall, it's a great accessory for anyone.

Not up to Apple quality. I tried it for a few days. It did not fit properly or fold right. It did not provide a stable base for the iPad in upright position. I went back to my leather Apple cover and a third party back cover.
