Useful and easy to use; watch out for ipad2 breakage

Bought the ipad2 a week ago and today as I was getting out of the car, the side of the ipad tapped against the metal door. Didn't hit the door hard, I barely noticed the tap, that is until I opened the ipad to use it in our hotel room. Huge cracks in the ipad glass (although the screen still works).

The ipad2 needs a full protective case like the Kindle has or one risks breakage like I had today when transporting the ipad2.

I called the Apple 800 number and was informed glass breakage will cost $299 to switch out another ipad2 for mine. Not on warranty either as it was an accidental breakage.

Even before I switch out I'm getting a protective case of some sort. Hard lesson learned.

    Nice concept, but weak magnets

I loved my Smart Cover, until one day I was unfolding it to close it up again and the hinge magnet slipped, letting my iPad fall off my lap onto the ground. My iPad suffered a small dented corner in the aluminum backing and worse, a cracked screen. Argh! I had come to trust my Smart Cover too much, and it lulled me into a false sense of security. These accidents could have been prevented if 1) the Smart Cover had a more secure attachment to the iPad, and 2) if the iPad was more durable and didn't have a screen going right to the edge. I'll miss the convenience of the Smart Cover, but I'm going to find something more trustworthy and durable.

    Not much protection

Although the idea of the cover was a wonderful concept, the cover does not actually serve a purpose. A cover that protects the entire IPAD is a better idea. Just the idea of this thing falling makes me nervous. So purchasing this cover was unfortunately a waste of money. I ended up spending the same amount for a cover that protects both the front and back and still folds to hold up the IPAD to view.

this is cool for protecting the face of the ipad 2, and looks nice, it can also be used as an oragami stand, setting it in different positions, However, it doesn't offer complete protection for the body of the ipad. i would recommend the sena zip book cover they offer which covers it entirely, and doubles as a stand as well.I actually use it with the sena zip book for extra protection, and it works nicely, and helps it fit more securely. personally, i think it is useful for anyone needing to use the ipad for a magnifier, so you can take it out of the zip book and use the smart cover as a stand, with enough room behind it to hand hold a document, for example, behind the ipad2 for magnifiication. so, it does have a few different purposes. the sena zip book can be used as a stand as well, but you have to take the ipad out to take pictures and to use the lense as a magnifier. So, if you can, i would get both. Besides, I am a fan of apple and their warranties on practically everything for at least a year. Hope this is helpful.

    Not fully optimized

Acceptable for utility, although could have been designed much better.

What I expected: Smart case that fits my iPad snugly like a polyurethane glove. This way my iPad is fully protected from minor scratches, etc.

What I got: A loose case with a smart cover glued on, and from time to time, my iPad spilling out from the case when shifted from vertical-upright to horizontal-upright position, and vice-versa.

Not bad, but not great either. Stability Problems.

I just purchased and installed my new Smart Cover for my iPad 2. It was a little awkward to snap into the case and, while it looks sharp and fits ok, I seriously question its function as a stand, particularly when the iPad is being stood upright (i.e., for movie watching). It is VERY unstable in this position and I am concerned about it toppling over (forward) at the slightest bump of nudge. I may end up having to return the new cover if this problem persists after I break in the cover. Buyer beware.

my daughter bought this for me as a gift. However, it is made well and of good quality but somewhat disappointed considering it is an Apple design. Strange to me that when opened completely flat to the back, it actually covers the camera lens -- seems more compatible with the iPad original rather than the iPad2 in this regard. Certainly, you can fold one section over and uncover the lens but seems like a small hole in that one corner would be a better design and still be protective of the front when closed, IMHO.

Also, the magnetic attachment is not super secure and will pop of relatively easily but does work well with the features it promotes and performs as advertised.

Otherwise, a good quality basic cover and reasonable design and price. Given all the above is why it only got 3 stars but is slightly better than average and would have given it 3.5 stars if I could.
