    Good, with a few caveats.

    • Written by from Lehi

It makes me crazy that so many reviews give one star for the cover not protecting the back. So, in case you can't tell from the description or pictures... THIS COVER IS MEANT TO PROTECT YOU SCREEN!

With that out of the way. The cover is quite stylish. You get to keep the original appeal of design while protecting the glass on your new toy. I have a folio cover that works great for protecting the front and back, but when I just want the minimal, this cover fits the bill nicely.

The sleep/wake features work great on iPad 2. I cannot vouch for the "new iPad". My folio does this as well, so I've grown accustomed to this. The magnets that hold the cover on do their job pretty well. Yes, it still pops off periodically when I don't intend it to. No, this has not caused me any trouble as I just pop it back on. It is infinitely faster when dealing with a cradle than something like a folio case.

Design is sharp. I can see where it might start cracking where it folds, but time will tell. Overall, it's a pretty good screen cover, though it does come with the "Apple Tax" that makes it overpriced for what it is. Still, if you want minimalism, this is the way to go.

    It's a cover, not a handle!

    • Written by from Portland

If you are looking for a cover that doubles as a stand, this cover is excellent! If you are hoping for a full-body protective suit with a carrying handle, buy something else, but don't complain about this item! Who really thinks that they can carry around their iPad by this little cover attached by little magnets? You purchased an expensive tablet, treat it with care. Don't worry about the dust lines, they come off when you clean off all your typical finger smudges.

Only four stars however because when it's in the taller stand position, I find that the cover needs to be fuzzy side out or it won't stay in its triangular shape. I'd rather keep the fuzzy side enclosed to stay cleaner. also, four stars for the ridiculous price gouging from Apple for 75 cents of plastic.

    Good case..bad price

    • Written by from LATROBE

I was amazed when I got this case in the mail and actually seen what I paid for...I was expecting something more. But I was also amazed when the case automatically snapped into place. It absolutely does what it's suppose to and I have had no problems with scuff marks that other people seem to have. It also supports the iPad perfectly when I'm watching a video or typing it's actually really sturdy, it took a little getting used to but you figure out how to fold it for maximum support. It would be an awesome case of it were about 15 or 20 dollars cheaper. I really wanna buy a more protective case but im not aware of one that would not obstruct the speakers that's why I went with the smart cover

    Works as intended

    • Written by from La Canada Flintridge

The smart cover works fiine as what it intended to do on new iPad. I don't know there are negative reviews on its functionality. I am just wondering if back cover is interfering with it. I took a star off due to angle you get when fold it to have iPad stand or elevated is not really comfortable position in my use. Apple should do a little more research on optimal angle. Other than that, magnetic sleep function works well too.

    It's a cover -- NOT a handle

    • Written by from Dresher

I'm seeing in these reviews people saying they dropped the iPad and were left holding the cover. Folks--it's not a handle, it's a cover. And--it's a cover that's held on with a magnet--NOT an industrial magnet, just a regular one. Don't carry the iPad around by the cover...

Mine works great--puts the iPad in sleep mode (check your settings if it's not doing it?). I wish there was a black one in the polyurethane, but gray was fine. Good investment...

    Great cover!

I love the navy blue leather cover I purchased. It's like most things Apple produces; simple, attractive design that "just works". I also purchased a Belkin snap cover for the back which I am equally pleased with so far. The only reason I rated the smart cover 4 instead of 5 stars is due to the price. I think it should be about $20 cheaper.

    Great design

I really love the smart cover. Works really well on the New iPad. The fact that it doubles up as a stand is brilliant. However don't expect any great protection...it will cover your screen ok but the rest of the iPad is still just as vulnerable as it was without the cover. Keep this in mind when purchasing. Can't fault the rest of it though, it's a great addition to my iPad!

    Smart cover

This is great for turning the iPad on and off...but it needs a caution..If you have a pacemaker do not buy it. I found myself getting light-headed and had to quickly remove it and toss it out of working range. Eventually I gave it to my granddaughter so she could have fun with the magnets.

    Great for what it is.

No it doesn't protect the back and it does come off ipad easily but users who complain should do some research before buying. I love mine. It makes propping my ipad for viewing movies or typing easy. I went to iskins and bought their case made to work with the smart cover. This eliminates the smart cover from coming off, it is extremely secure. My only problem with the smart cover is that it seems to wear out easily. I have only been using it for a week and a half and it is already starting to bend out of shape in one area that bends to support propping. Maybe I should have bought one of the leather ones instead of the polyurethane one? I'm happy enough with it that if another better case isn't made for the ipad 3 I will buy a leather one when this one is no longer usable.

Good, but buy the darker colors

    • Written by from Clarkston

Works well; protects screen when your not using it, and is a good stand. Does show dirt on lighter colors, so buy the darker ones.

    Essential accessory

    • Written by from FINSPÅNG

The smart cover is excellent. It's perfect in every single way except one - when the cover is folded to the back, it doesn't quite attach to the back itself. Very small caveat though. All in all, this is the best accessory Apple's ever released - it's even better than than the excellent iPhone bumper.

A shame that the good colours are reserved for the leather versions, though.

I got the dark grey cover -- and I couldn't like it more. It does just what Apple says it will do!

    Smart Design. Has some limitations.

    • Written by from Salt Lake City

Some of the reviews here are a little puzzling. If you thought the cover (it's not really a case) would protect the back, you didn't look at any of the photos. Also, being surprised that light colors show dirt more easily than dark colors? Hmmm.

I've had the black leather case for at least two years now and it is finally starting to wear out and get a little loose on the iPad, causing it to toggle off/lock more easily than it used to. No stains though... try the leather and dark colors to help yourself out.

All in all though, I think it's a pretty slick design. The magnets are a clever way to connect, and I don't think it comes off all that easily. I've never had it fall out of my hand because of the magnets or cover. I also never pick it up by the cover alone which is what some reviewers seem to have done. The ability to use it as a stand is great... a vertical orientation would be nice if possible. It doesn't protect the back... true story. Some clear cover stuff would help with scratches or scrapes.

A nice design, but if you want every surface protected, add clear covering on the back or look for a different option.
