    Very disappointed

I got the red leather smart cover, firstly because I thought leather would last longer than the polyurethane and because I liked the red color. In just over 6 months, the leather is splitting around the edge and it is so dirty and I don't seem to be able to clean it. Very, very, disappointed.

    So So

I like how the smart cover itself works! Awesome! However, like others have said the leather cover is very hard to keep clean. Additionally, it gets scratched easily. It can't take being in my purse, gym bag, etc. I've had mine since March 11 when the iPad 2 was released and it doesn't look so great. I paid more for this then the other covers because it was a (Product) Red, the color was unique and i thought it would be more durable because it is leather. I was wrong about the durability. I actually wasn't too upset about the scratches until I visited the website and was reminded of how expensive this thing was. I'd buy another smart cover but probably the less expensive one since I know what to expect.

    WORTH THE MONEY

I am very pleased with the (PRODUCT) RED Smart Cover. I have read other reviews for the leather smart covers that complain about retaining fingerprints, no such thing has happened with my use. I frequently use lotion and there has been no evidence of oil transfer. The case is holding up very well. I thought about getting other type covers but didn't want the bulk, this product keeps the slim design of the iPad and it is well worth the money.

    A Mixed Bag

The smart cover is a mixed bag as far as I can tell. Here's my Pro's and Con's

    Pro's:
The iPad instant-on feature when you open the cover.
The screen protection is good while not being used
Holds the iPad in a okay position for typing and watching video

    Con's:
Magnets give a false sense of security - never pick the iPad up by the cover - it will fall
A cover is needed to protect the back of the iPad - or you will get scratches
The Smart Cover offers little if any protection when you drop your iPad - and you will
Buying both a Smart Cover and a back cover ends up being expensive

My bottom-line is I do use the Smart Cover but it should be part of a more complete cover system. I am also always aware that the Smart Cover can come off at any moment.

Will Disconnect unexpectedly and cause you iPad to fall

I bought one of these new with my iPad. The magnetic latch came undone will propped up on a table and the iPad slid and fell onto the floor and cracked the glass and dented a corner. A 39 dollar accessory destroyed my iPad. Need I say more?

    Smart cover

This product looks and feels great and initially seems beautifully designed. However, upon travelling with it some troubles pop up. Firstly, the magnet is strong enough to erase electronic hotel keys kept in the same bag. I went through about 6 keys in a week before I figured out the culprit. Within the same bag, I wasn’t able to keep the key far enough from the case to cure the problem. Also, when travelling and carrying the iPad and case within a carry-on bag, the cover does not always stay in place unless it is restricted. In other words, you can’t just put it loose into another bag and expect the cover to stay in place. When the cover comes loose, then the battery is used, apps can accidentally be activated, and the screen is subject to scratching. Not perfect.

    Not For Me

As a cover it does OK, covers front only, leaves back clear to allow proper cooling when charging and in use.
As a stand there was no way I could I could keep it from coming off of the ipad. Clearly an overpriced, poor design. I am returning it tomorrow. There are plenty others that should work.

I like the color and it does prevent scratches on the screen, but it can give you a false sense of security because the magnet will not hold, you should never pick it up by the cover or it's a goner. Also, the prop up aspect is not good, it tends to slump over when you use that feature. If you want to pay $39.95 for a screen scratch saver, it's worth it.

Does what it says on the tin

I purchased three covers more than 6 months ago. One for myself, one for my wife and one for my parents. The covers are a great design. They protect the screen by keeping it clean and free from scratches. The folding stand function works great for both typing and watching videos. I love the auto off/on function. It does exactly what it says on the tin!

The cover will NOT protect the iPad if you drop it... you are an idiot if you expect it to!
The cover will NOT act as a handle to pickup the iPad... you are an idiot if you expect it to!
The stand function is easy and works just fine... you are an idiot if you cannot work this out!
The cover will get dirty if you do not take care of it... you are an idiot if you expect it to self clean!
The back of the iPad can still get scratched... you get the idea!

I've had my red smart cover for a week now. It is pretty stylish, but like on review said it is hard to keep clean. Other than that, it works great.

iPad red leather smart cover wears out

    • Written by from Denver

The smart cover functioned well for about 6 months and then began to fall apart at the seams. Splitting on the top and bottom and the hinged edge. I do use my iPad 2 every day, but primarily at home. Not only did it split at the seams, but the leather stained (despite using a leather protecting spray). The hinge side, where I tended to pick it up from, got dark compared to the rest of the cover. After about 9 months I have a cover that looks several years old. I am not impressed with this product.

    People are ridiculous

    • Written by from Boston

I never really write reviews, but after somehow finding myself on this site and reading what many people are saying, I feel compelled to add my two cents.

If your iPad is disconnecting from the smart cover while in stand form, you're doing something wrong. Plain and simple. I work at a company where almost everyone has an iPad (company sponsored woot woot) and practically everyone has them standing up in vertical position at their desks...I've never seen one fall. Literally almost 100 people using these things like this and I've never even heard of this happening.

The cover doesn't come off unless you pull it off purposefully or shake the iPad while holding it by only the cover...which even then it holds on for quite a while! So yeah, in short, don't believe these people who say their iPad fell off the cover. They were doing something wrong. Go to an apple store and have them demonstrate it...

    Deceptive advertising!

Advertised as"so much more than a case" implies that it is at least like a case, which this is not! It does not have a backside, just a front flap and nothing to protect the backside and all that for $69.00 apple could at least mention that in their ads, now I have to send it back.

    works as expected

After scanning reviews, I'm struck with those who expected this to work like a cushioned case -- it is most definitely *not* that (but I didn't expect it to be). This is a very elegant, easily attached/detached cover for the screen; no more, no less. If it's in my wife's purse, it will keep the screen from getting banged up, but I have no expectation that it will protect the iPad if I drop it... if I wanted that, I'd buy a bulky case that encloses the iPad.

So before you get this, ask yourself if you want serious padded protection or just a screen cover that doubles as a bit of a stand. If you want the latter, this'll do the trick.

    It Works!

A few comments; some based on what others wrote. It's not a case; never claimed to be. To protect the back and edges of my iPad 2, I bought a clear plastic one that has gaps designed to allow this flip cover to magnetically adhere to the iPad. It was cheap and I can replace it when it gets too scratched up if I want. The magnets do occasionally slip loose, so be prepared for that. Don't prop it where it's in danger, don't carry it by the cover, and don't throw it in a bag with things that can damage it without ensuring it's snuggly in place. I spilled a beverage on it. Since it's leather (animal hide which I assumed I could wash), I submerged it all in warm soapy water and washed it. It held up just fine, all of the spill came off, and it dried beautifully (didn't look like it had ever gotten wet). But it does show signs of wear. The red color, which was darker when I bought it than I would have liked, has gotten even darker over time. But wear and appearance changes are to be expected with a product used as much as we use our iPads, so I can't ding Apple for that. I do not appreciate the large price gap between the leather and synthetic covers. And like another writer stated, when I consider that it's not quite as bright red as I had hoped, and that it costs so much more, I don't know that I'll buy another one. But it is unique and I've found it, combined with the clear plastic cover I have to protect the rest of the iPad, to be the best combination of protection and functionality I've used to date (I've tried 3 other cases). Thanks Apple; the iPad is the most amazing thing I've ever purchased in my life!

Been using the red leather cover for about 5 months, and I haven't been disappointed so far. It has performed all of its functions (cover/stand/auto-lock&wake) consistently so far, and I like how the leather gets this broken-in kinda look, the way leather should. Some minor remarks are: After a while, the folding sections lose a small bit of their firmness, so you might need a slight bit more precision when folding up the triangle. Also, it seems that the hotter-running 3rd generation iPad causes that gray material on the inside of the hinge to burn a bit over time. It actually left some quite visible marks on my iPad, which I noticed when I removed the cover (something I seldom do), but it was easily cleaned with a damp cloth. The inside of the hinge has a couple of singed spots, but I can live with that. And one other thing, the micro-fiber inside of the cover misses cleaning the spots where the cover folds, so it doesn't do a quite perfect job of passively keeping your screen clean. But this is just a nit-pick, I love the cover.

Product Is Great! Yes it may have some problems...

This Product is great! Granted, it does not offer any "real" protection. It is more for style and design.
If you expect this to protect your iPad, then don't buy it.
If you expect this to be used as a handle, then don't buy it!
if you expect this not to get dirty after regular use, THEN DO NOT BUY IT

Now some people say that this is not good for a stand. Perhaps you are not using it right, try fIf you purchase the leather Smart Cover, than expect to be cleaning it as it does get dirty easier!olding it the other way!
The magnet may slip off sometimes because it is not meant to be that strong.
If you purchase the leather cover, expect to be cleaning it weekly.

    Smart? Cover

I personally do not like the smart cover at all! It only holds by magnets and is always coming off. I'd rather have something that holds it securely and I don't have to worry about falling off all the time. I paid for the leather one but will be returning it tomorrow.
