    Great cover - great design

After much research, I decided to purchase the black leather cover for my iPad 2.
    Aesthetics:
+ look and feel of the leather is great
+ metal hing and magnet look great

    Functionality:
+ magnetic attachment is great - easy to remove and re-attach
+ soft liner is great against the screen
    - folds only in one direction (microfiber out)

Overall, I'd only remove less than one half of one star for it folding the the liner side out. Highly recommended if you need business black!

I've had this iPad cover since I got my iPad3 when it came out, and I haven't had any complaints about it. Some of the other reviews here cited the magnets being not strong enough and the iPad falling and dropping onto the floor. There is a simple solution to this: don't hold the iPad by the case! You need to keep your paws on your iPad whenever possible. The case looks great and works great for what it is meant to do.

If you want my honest opinion, here it is. This cover does what I expect it to, and does it extremely well.

I am typing this review on my iPad using the cover to prop it in the right angle. It holds my iPad at an amazing angle to type with. The other "movie" angle holds my iPad steady to be able to watch movies while in front of me.

I chose the black leather because I am an entertainment technician (video, lighting, sound, etc.) and it looks extremely professional, the microfiber side keeps fingerprints in three rows which are easily eliminated with one swipe of the cover while detached, it prevents my screen from scratching while transporting (which happens to me a lot).

The magnets are extremely strong and I can actually hold my iPad by the cover ( DON'T TRY THIS). I still reccomend holding the iPad by the iPad itself.

Yes, it only protects the screen, but that is what it was designed for, to be thin, lightweight, and to protect only the screen.

Overall, this cover works exactly how I expected it to (I watch the keynotes) and that is all that I could ask for.

    Excellent cover, period

Everyone, who's a critic, pay attention...leather scratches and marts, just like anything else that is leather...ev own a pair of leather shoes. Cost, surprise, leather costs more than poly...again, the same show analogy; leather costs more than other materials...why, because it's leather genius's...get over it.

This is a great cover, the magnets work very well, and it functions as designed. If money is an issue, then yes, go with poly, but if you want leather and understand that leather stains and scratches, just as it should, then spend the extra money.

The Black Leather Smart Cover is the only way to go! I find it is a rather classy look. I have never had any problems with the magnet dis-engaging, as I do not pick up my iPad up, by using the Smart Cover. Match the the Black Leather Smart Cover with the proper cover, for the
back of the back of the iPad, and it is all good! I like the look and feel of the leather, versus the
poly. Black Leather is the only way to go (just my opinion).

This iPad SmartCover is the coolest thing that will happen to your iPad. It's been dropped on the floor face down, not even a scratch. This is really worth 69.99$

    PERFECT DESIGN FOR A COVER

    • Written by from La Grange

I keep reading reviews from folks who have purchased the cover, apparently without doing their homework. The cover is NOT an all protective case, nor was it intended as such. It is a remarkably designed multi function product that is intended to protect the face/screen only.

I have the black leather version purchased with my iPad 3. It fits like a glove, magnetically atttaches very solidly. It is segmented in a manner that allows it to remain attached and act as a screen tilt or vertical holder, in either landscape or portrait position. I use it to wrap around the back of my iPad and act as a scuff deterrent. However, I have found the back doesn't scuff, anyway, it may be just me, but who cares if it has a minor scuff or scratch?

The cover is very thin, compared to the others I researched. It is so thin, I actually slip it into an insert originally designed to slip in papers and documents in my leather note pad. The note pad closes completely and it is not apparent it contains my iPad. Remarkable! With the iPad and cover inserted, it remains only 5/8"-3/4" TOTAL thickness. People are astounded when I open my leather note pad and produce an iPad 3!

Bottom line: yes, it's not cheap, it's a screen cover/protector (not a case), works EXACTLY as intended and is very sleek and professional. Well worth the price!

I shopped for over an hour and examined everything offered. My conclusion was simply, Why would you purchase an iPad 3 and wrap a case around it that renders it capable of battlefield use and leaves you with a bulky, gawdy tool that is as cumbersome as a laptop? HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

I own both the black and the product red leather smart covers and am very pleased with both. I can't understand the negative reviews particularly the ones about no back cover. I gather these reviewers didn't read the product description otherwise they would have known there was no back cover. You mark the cover down for that? Read, people, read! Excellent hard shell back covers are offered all over Amazon and even go so far as to match Apple's smart cover. Can you imagine that? Yes, I will agree the price could be lower but I feel it's worth it to protect my EXPENSIVE investment from scratches. If you choose a minimalistic look to keep the look of the iPad, you are going to sacrifice total protection. Only you can choose what's right for you. I love the leather smart covers and have paired them with many back covers. Nice option, highly recommend as long as you understand and read what you are buying.

    MUCH BETTER THAN POLY

I had the poly grey for about a week and half and had to change to leather, once I put black leather on the ipad, it felt again like an ipad. The poly was cheep feeling, and felt like something that belonged on a toy, even though the leather may degrade over time, the poly felt like it wouldnt last long either, if not shorter time. Deff worth the quality and appeal the leather has. I also felt the hinge was better on the leather, it might just be in my head. very happy, now.

Perfect execution of what is sets out to be

After 9 months of daily use, this remains a very durable, very soft leather screen cover that has held up perfectly. The black leather shows no smudges or spots from your hand and has that nice patina that only leather has with time. If you are looking for a case, look elsewhere. This is a screen cover/protector that mantains the clean lines of the iPad 2, while offering the functionality that the Apple site details better than my description could. Well executed; top quality.
    Love it!

    Most beautiful accessory

    • Written by from Sarajevo

I own it for a month and I'm extremely happy with it! It's clever, beautiful and functional. Can't understand the complaints about not protecting the back - there is the case which does and it's offered next to smart cover with the same functionality and looks of the smart cover, so if you buy this one, you can't expect it to protect the back - which is beautiful and resistant as it is!
Magnetic grip works as expected and better. If you hold it sideways gripping only the cover, you shouldn't expect it to stay attached. If it falls and shatters blame your limited intelligence rather than accessory. However, if you hang it straight down holding only the cover and even swinging it will stay attached - something which surpassed my expectations. And mind you, my iPad is the new one (3) which is heavier than 2 and still holds!
Screen on-off works magically - impressing anyone who sees it.
I like the leather one. It is a bit expensive to buy a couple of other colors as well (which I'd love to). The leather behaves exactly as it should. If you don't like leather go for plastic (not my cup of tea though). If you expect to find the leather which wouldn't show some wear after extensive use, then there must be something seriously wrong with you!
Would highly recommend it to a friend.

I looked at all the cases out there, and have to this is the best choice for me. I love the minimalist concept of this case, as well as the ease of use and the leather does a grea job of protecting the screen. It does get scratched up, but I think it looked better worn ( like most things leather). Also does a great job of protecting the back when open. When closed I just sit it face down and the back of the iPad still looks new. I even let my 8 year old neice play with my iPad all the time and it shows no wear. You do need a sleeve for travel, but that is easy enough. I highly recommend this case for anyone who is looking for an easy to use, light weight, and very attractive case for their iPad.

    Couple more thoughts

I put up an earlier review but forgot to mention:

    1) No i have not had problems with it falling off my 3rd gen iPad
    2) Its a really cool stand.
    3) In addition to the magnets that hold it onto the iPad at the hinge the cover also seems to have magnets inside the cover to fix it to the iPad on the side opposite the hinge which is cool.
    4) Those magnets also help u when u roll it up to use it as a stand. Ive & Co REALLY thot this thru.
    5) Yes the crud that collects on any iPad, iPhone or other touch screen device does tend to form a couple of lines on the screen if u leave the cover closed for more than a few hours. But those lines aren't worse than the rest of the fingerprints. u don't notice them much when u turn on the bright screen. And yea its a fact of life that u need to clean off the screen of an iPad every once in a while anyway. The cover doesn't make the problem worse IMO.

I would not own an iPad without this cover.

Got this for my dad as a Christmas present for his work-issued iPad, but a co-worker got him one of the polyurethane ones and gave it to him within days of him getting his iPad. After reading reviews of the polyurethane iPad Smart Covers, I decided that mine was better and that he should use that one instead, so I gave him mine early. The iPad Smart Cover works well--you can tell that it is locking the iPad 2 when you close it if you have the sound up, it protects the screen, and it looks professional (plus it hasn't ripped or torn yet). Excellent product, Apple.

    Brilliant cover

Those people who have rated this cover poorly must have received a faulty cover...or the beautiful simplicity is somehow lost on them. This is a very brilliant cover. Very simple, but highly effective. It covers the most important surface...the screen. It protects while allowing the elegance of the iPad to still be accessible. It amazes me people who buy an iPad or iPhone and then proceed to hide all the beauty with a bulky cover that screams..."I live in such fear..." of dropping my iPad that I will hide the beauty and elegance from sight and touch. Sad. The iPad is a tough tool...it can't be dropped any more than a laptop...but it doesn't need to be bubble wrapped from the world. The iPad cover allows the elegance to live on and add joy to the owners life every time they flip open the leather cover and it comes to life. The cover flips to support the iPad perfectly in two primay positions....low angle for viewing downward on the table and high angle for movie viewing. It does it all simply and with durable beauty. Although not required, but when combined with a sleeve cover it is the perfect match. I use a timbuk2 sleeve so when my ipad is sharing space in my backpack it has additonal protection. The smart cover is very much worth the money...great product.

I've had this cover for about a month now, no regrets... This doesn't include the rear case, but I knew this going in (for the price though you might expect it). I use the Incase black rear case cover and it's a good match. For travel I stick it in a inexpensive netbook sleeve for added protection.

I originally bought the non leather case in blue. I didn't even realize there was a difference between the case and the cover, I just wanted to save some money. I used that case for about a week and decided that my iPad deserved more than that; it made my purchase feel cheap. I decided after researching that I wanted a leather cover to show off my iPad instead of hiding it behind the blue case. In my honest opinion, this case should come standard with the iPad. It is the perfect accessory for it. You get to cover the iPad and protect the main surface as though you are closing a laptop. I actually got the iPad to replace my old MacBook and I am never turning back. I know that the price for the leather cover seems steep, but after spending so much on the iPad itself, it seems worth the investment. The design of the product is flawless as I didn't expect the leather cover to look this good. I have a white iPad and went with the black leather; I must say it looks fantastic. I highly recommend this product. :)

Bought this cover a few weeks ago and im impressed, it keeps the dust of the ipad screen and gives it a fashionable look. Allot of reviews about this cover said that it gets dirty and such, really though, you wouldnt take your leather coat camping or to gym or to a really dirty atmosphere, why would you take a leather cover? All in all its a great cover.
