    Honestly?

If you want my honest opinion, here it is. This cover does what I expect it to, and does it extremely well.

I am typing this review on my iPad using the cover to prop it in the right angle. It holds my iPad at an amazing angle to type with. The other "movie" angle holds my iPad steady to be able to watch movies while in front of me.

I chose the black leather because I am an entertainment technician (video, lighting, sound, etc.) and it looks extremely professional, the microfiber side keeps fingerprints in three rows which are easily eliminated with one swipe of the cover while detached, it prevents my screen from scratching while transporting (which happens to me a lot).

The magnets are extremely strong and I can actually hold my iPad by the cover ( DON'T TRY THIS). I still reccomend holding the iPad by the iPad itself.

Yes, it only protects the screen, but that is what it was designed for, to be thin, lightweight, and to protect only the screen.

Overall, this cover works exactly how I expected it to (I watch the keynotes) and that is all that I could ask for.

Have this cover and it leaves three smuges on the screen everytime I close it. The magnet clasp thing always falls off. Paid the extra money for the leather only to find out its not worth it. Again paying for the "Appple" name.

I've had this iPad cover since I got my iPad3 when it came out, and I haven't had any complaints about it. Some of the other reviews here cited the magnets being not strong enough and the iPad falling and dropping onto the floor. There is a simple solution to this: don't hold the iPad by the case! You need to keep your paws on your iPad whenever possible. The case looks great and works great for what it is meant to do.

Some of the weirdest reviews I have ever read....Good cover

The reviews here are some of the weirdest I have ever used, ranging from "amazing" to "horrible"...
This is a cover that is what it is -- it protects the FRONT SCREEN of the iPad, and is designed to do nothing else. It does not protect the iPad from user-drops. It does not protect the iPad if you grab it from the cover without supporting the iPad. It does not cause that damage...YOU cause that damage when you do not pay attention to what you are doing.
Never advertised as an iPad protector, but simply a front screen cover. They look stylish, they work well on all the current new iPads (even though some here say they don't -- they work exactly the same on the new iPad as they do the iPad2...I administer 20 iPads in my office, and not one person has complained about the cover -- even though many remove it and purchase their own full-protection covers.
Decent cover. Does what it is supposed to do. Ignore all the complaints herein.

    PERFECT DESIGN FOR A COVER

I keep reading reviews from folks who have purchased the cover, apparently without doing their homework. The cover is NOT an all protective case, nor was it intended as such. It is a remarkably designed multi function product that is intended to protect the face/screen only.

I have the black leather version purchased with my iPad 3. It fits like a glove, magnetically atttaches very solidly. It is segmented in a manner that allows it to remain attached and act as a screen tilt or vertical holder, in either landscape or portrait position. I use it to wrap around the back of my iPad and act as a scuff deterrent. However, I have found the back doesn't scuff, anyway, it may be just me, but who cares if it has a minor scuff or scratch?

The cover is very thin, compared to the others I researched. It is so thin, I actually slip it into an insert originally designed to slip in papers and documents in my leather note pad. The note pad closes completely and it is not apparent it contains my iPad. Remarkable! With the iPad and cover inserted, it remains only 5/8"-3/4" TOTAL thickness. People are astounded when I open my leather note pad and produce an iPad 3!

Bottom line: yes, it's not cheap, it's a screen cover/protector (not a case), works EXACTLY as intended and is very sleek and professional. Well worth the price!

I shopped for over an hour and examined everything offered. My conclusion was simply, Why would you purchase an iPad 3 and wrap a case around it that renders it capable of battlefield use and leaves you with a bulky, gawdy tool that is as cumbersome as a laptop? HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

After having the Polyurethane cove for more than a year, I wanted to get a new one and thought the leather looked better.
Well I do like the the look and feel of the leather, its performance is a let down.
When I fold it up to make a stand so I can watch video's, the cover slips a little so the iPad is leaning back. Not falling over, but leaning back enough that at times I need to prop it against something.
I found it did not stick to the screen as nice as the Polyurethane one, not sure if I have a bad set of magnets or something with the cover itself.
Save some money, get the Polyurethane cover instead. The leather looks nice, but in the end so not worth the extra money.

Was this useful? Nice, but so not worth the price.

I just got this case today and while I haven't been using it for very long, I am pleased with the quality. It feels really sturdy, it isn't bulky at all and I like the feel of the leather. Contrary to other posts you can fold it with the leather side out instead of the microfiber side, it's just a little stubborn at first but it works perfectly. My only complaints are the price and that the microfiber inside can get dusty very easily but I found that using a lint roller will take care of that. All in all I am by pleased with this product.

    Intelligent case, but not perfect

When i bought my iPad2 i was surprised of how the magnets work and how it cleans your screen and how it stands. This case is perfect for typing, at least i use it for school, and when you watch movies it has the other position which is perfect.
When reviews complain about gaming, they do not know what they are talking about. If you flip the case so it has behind and make it flat and put it on your jeans when you are sitting on your bed for example it will not fall and you can game as much as you want.

One thing I didnt like is the price, but in the long run it is worth it. Other thing is that is doesnt cover the back, but other than that its perfect. Recommend :)

    Brilliant cover

Those people who have rated this cover poorly must have received a faulty cover...or the beautiful simplicity is somehow lost on them. This is a very brilliant cover. Very simple, but highly effective. It covers the most important surface...the screen. It protects while allowing the elegance of the iPad to still be accessible. It amazes me people who buy an iPad or iPhone and then proceed to hide all the beauty with a bulky cover that screams..."I live in such fear..." of dropping my iPad that I will hide the beauty and elegance from sight and touch. Sad. The iPad is a tough tool...it can't be dropped any more than a laptop...but it doesn't need to be bubble wrapped from the world. The iPad cover allows the elegance to live on and add joy to the owners life every time they flip open the leather cover and it comes to life. The cover flips to support the iPad perfectly in two primay positions....low angle for viewing downward on the table and high angle for movie viewing. It does it all simply and with durable beauty. Although not required, but when combined with a sleeve cover it is the perfect match. I use a timbuk2 sleeve so when my ipad is sharing space in my backpack it has additonal protection. The smart cover is very much worth the money...great product.

The smart cover is one of the best covers out there, and none is thinner and offers the same level of protection. Some reviews say that they can not play games when upright, it will just fall over with the slightest touch, and it will tip over easily but the cover was never designed for you to be touching it a lot and with a lot of force like you do when playing games. When up right, it's for watching video or typing with a Bluetooth keyboard (you do not need a keyboard to type the touch screen and lower angle just fine for moderate typing). This is not for playing games in upright position (just put it at the lower one works fine for me).

    Ipad 2 Smart Cover

    • Written by from Chalfont

12 of 13 people found this useful

It is an innovative screen cover with the magnets turning the Ipad on every time you open and close it. It protects the screen itself fairly well, but it provides no protection for the back of the Ipad. Thankfully you can get the Smart Cover compatible back cover. It also doesn't have strong magnet hinges so you have to be careful not to pick your Ipad up the wrong way. Overall, it is a nice case that you can get in a handful of lively colors. The only complaints over it seem to be user errors, so I would recommend this product other than the fact that it is a little pricey.

    Awful Stylish, Awful Stand

As a screen cover it is okay. As a stand it is awful, terrible and essentially unusable.

Even on a flat surface when upright the iPad often tips over with slight taps. Even worse, the magnets pop loose necessitating a fumble fest to orient it to correct edge.

If propped in the wedge shape it collapses at most inconvenient times.

I might not complain if it had only cost $19.95. I would have just tossed it for its replacement. Now I am stuck with a floppy leather pen pad.

Caused my new iPad 3 to shatter!

I've used an iPad 1 for over a year. I saved up my $$$ to buy a New iPad(3). I decided to splurge and get the slick leather "Smart Cover". I had the fun of organizing it and transferring my Apps, and was feeling pretty chipper taking it to work the next morning. The magnets weren't strong enough to hold it. It sepperated from the "magnetic" case and it landed on a paving stone. It shattered and I have to pay $300 to get a replacement. I have been transporting my old iPad in a $14 case that protected it from a few falls. This $70 case cost me $300 in the long run! I would like to formally complain, but I can't figure out how.

I purchased a New iPad 64gb Verizon 4G and the Black Leather smart-cover last Sunday at the Apple store closest to us ( about 45 minutes away). Before leaving I looked at accessories and was shown this case. I thought it looked nice and figured it would be better to leave knowing my screen will be protected. I hated this cover after day 2. It kept popping off and would shift up and down about 1/2 an inch. It also started to get soft and smashed on the edges. I honestly like the concept and may try a plastic one down the road but for the price I would have thought Apple would have released a better quality item. I wish Apple would have released a case like they did for the original iPad. I really liked the simplicity and feel of that case. I previously owned the original iPad and case for about 1 1/2 years before upgrading and was looking forward to the smart cover available for the newer versions. I ended up getting a Targus Vuscape which I love thus far. But I like to change cases on occasion depending on my application. This case has been the only Apple product that has ever disappointed me as I own many.

I've used the (Red) Leather and Orange Polyeurethane "rev1" covers on the iPad2, and the newer "rev 2" Grey Polyeurethane, and Black Leather on the iPad3. I noticed that the "rev 2" covers have a nicer feel (they silently updated them a few months ago. I believe the "rev1" models start with "MC" as the part number, and the "rev2" start with "MD"). The inside of the "rev2" is more suede-like, probably due to thicker microfiber to keep dirt off the screen. I also noticed the "rev 2" leather seems to be more resistant to scratches and cosmetic damage which used to be my primary complaint with the Red leather cover.

That said, I can see people either loving or hating this cover. Luckily you can get a full refund if you dislike it. The love/hate primarily depends on how you intend to use (and treat) your $500+ glass tablet. I personally don't need to cover the back since I'm always mindful as to where I set it down. I certainly never hold my iPad by the Smart Cover or without a firm grip on the tablet itself so I don't need an "Otterbox" (which ironically isn't waterproof). I'm confused by those who say this was "hard to install". You literally just place the smart cover on the glass as if it were in the "closed" position, and let go. The magnetic hinge does the rest. You can remove it by using a bit of force to pull the cover away from the iPad when in the "open" position. I do enjoy the "Smart" aspect of this cover, in that automtically turns the screen off when closed and turns it on when open.

If you do want to protect the back from scratches, a "happy medium" would be to add one of the "Smart cover compatible" back covers by InCase or Belkin, or for a classier look, add a matching leather "Zagg Skin" to the back.

If you like to keep the aesthetics "clean" and don't have kids or a tedency to drop things, I highly recommend this case. If you don't want to have to worry about where you set it down, then get a massive "Otterbox" case and toss at will! However, I equate that to wrapping your nice couch in plastic like grandma used to do. I give it 4 stars only because it's over-priced, but that isn't really unexpected from an Apple accessory.

Was this useful? Great cover, complaints seem to be user error.

The Smart Cover for the iPad has a nice feel to it, and the leather version is much better than the polyurethane version (I have one of each). the only problem is it doesn't offer any protection for the back of the iPad
