iPad with retina display connected to lightning to 30 pin adaptor connected to 30 pin digital connector and I get a message "This accessory is not supported by iPad". I suppose I need to go out and purchase yet another over priced adaptor (lightning digital). The guys on the classic Apple branding ads should change places in my opinion. The clumsy nerdy guy is now...Apple.

"This accessory is not supported by ipad"

That's the error message that I get when I plug this adapter to my iPad 2. Going to return it to the store because it doesn't work.

    Works fine

    • Written by from Ayamonte

Was a bit skeptic after the reviews but can say it works as expected (iOS 6.1).
The only thing is that some apps don't support the HDMI output towards the TV and the only way to know is to try, therefore blame the app developers for that restriction or lack of information... Luckily for me most the apps I use do support HDMI output.

    Shame on you Apple!

    • Written by from Wilkesboro

I purchased this cable for $39 to provide an extention for the 30-pin connector to my iPad 3. It clearly states on the package that mirroring is supported on iPad2 and newer. I get the Accessory Not Supported message. I paid a premium for a factory cable that's incompatible. If Apple cannot produce a cable that works with their own products, who can?

It is a shame that Apple did have the foresight to envision the need to dock or use other accessories on an iPad and other products that have a protective cover installed. For $499, a 30-pin extender should not only be available, it should have been included. I don't know anyone that depends on their iPad for business that doesn't use some sort of protective case or cover.

Unbelievably poor quality for an Apple product!

    • Written by from CHATSWOOD

Like so many others, I am shocked that Apple released such a defective product under its own brand name.

Getting a connection established is touch-and-go at best, then it keeps dropping out.

The slightest, most miniscule movement of cable/connector is enough to destroy the connection between iPad and screen, then it's back to try, try and try again to get a sustained link before it terminates yet again.

Every time, we are advised that it is "not a supported accessory" - even though the Apple Store happily sold it to us!

Utterly appalling product quality and almost unusable. Avoid at all costs!

You are much better off using the VGA adapter. Contrary to expectations, it's a far superior product in every respect.

    AV or VGA

    • Written by from Moses Lake

Everybody saying this doesn't work with iPhone 4 or iPad 2 or whatever, know that this is an AV adapter and you might need an VGA adapter instead, also the VGA adapter costs less than this one although it doesn't support charging. Bottom line is if this one doesn't work, then maybe you need the other one.

One more thing, if your movies from iTunes don't play on your projector or TV screen, it's not due to the adapter, it's due to the fact that your projector doesn't allow HD movies to play. Newer projectors allow HD movies to play, I forgot the name of the thing that doesn't allow
HD movies but its found in older projectors and TV's.

I have an iPad2 and just bought a iPad3 and this thing works perfect. It does seem like it could get touchy in the future because its not supported well. I will try to be easy on it and hope it holds up. Two thumbs up so far!!!

    Well-built, but expensive

    • Written by from Guelph

Worked very well for mirroring Olympic content from CTV's app on our iPad2. Unlike AirPlay, apps don't need to be built with support. The only downside is the hit to the wallet!

Hooked my iPad 3 to a Samsung P2770HD monitor, and there it is! Screen looks like my iPad!

It is a "snug" connection - a tiny bit hard to get out of the iPad3 - hope that it holds up as I do plan to plug it / unplug it, often.

Not at all Steve Jobs approved

    • Written by from San Diego

There is no way to fill your 16:9 screen with this. Totally unApple, per Steve Jobs like expectations. Totally disappointing. Will same happen for hdmi connector adapter for my last gen 17" mbp? Not sure I want to risk the funds.

For $40 I would have expected full use if my TV, not just 30%

I bought this adapter, in person, at the Apple store in Dallas about a month ago, after discussing my equipment and my intended use. I have an iPad 2. The adapter worked flawlessly on what was my test run for switching all media rom cable to Apple TV. I could not realistically do that and handle all the media with my 2007-ish MacBook Pro (didn't support sound through HDMI, if nothing else) but that was okay because I intended to upgrade. So as step 2, I bought the MacBook Air last weekend and the thurdebolt AV adapter (which works poorly, at best), but still used my iPad running iOS 5 and its adapter without issue. Friday I upgraded to iOS 6 (6.1.3, to be exact) which rendered the thing completely useless. The TV and the iPad are connected, and they both reflect that, but no signal or sound. Why?! I can't downgrade back to iOS5 now, and since the upgrade in addition to the issues with the adapter, my painstakingly difficult process of converting over just my iTunes library to the Air (which, come on Apple, that's a basic, basic need for upgrades) was totally wrecked when I tried to sync the upgraded iPad to the library. Lost hundreds of songs, and ultimately had to wipe the iPad altogether and start again. Now I can't watch video at all through the iPad and the thuderbolt is sketchy, at best, and only really works when you physically hold the adapter into the thuderbolt post. How is this making things that "Just Work"?!

If I could, I would give it 0 stars. To put it simply, this product does NOT mirror the iPhone 4 via HDMI to TV. The only thing that comes through is audio. NO VIDEO. With iOS 6, there is no longer an option for TV settings. Nice try, but don't waste your time or money.

Really???? c'mon apple; you can do better than this.
