When it works, it's great... it just doesn't work often.

My time capsule recently died after about 4 months - just outside of the phone support window. When I bought it, I decided to ignore the numerous negative reviews about the time capsule and I ordered it for the convenience of automatice data backup. As a router, the time capsule works fine, and for automatic data backup it's extremely convenient. However, it does not always backup as scheduled (may go days without automatically backing up new files), so it is a bit finicky. This lack of predictability, coupled with the fact that it died in just 4 months lead me to say that I would not recommend this product. It's extremely convenient when it works; but, the quality is very poor.

Solved all my home network issues in an elegant way

We gradually have converted over to be an Apple household with MacBooks and iPads. We have a left over Windows notebook that I was using as a home server and a wireless printer. I also recently had to replace my cable modem and mistakenly chose a modem with built-in wireless n. Wireless speeds were inconsistent and would drop off. The wireless printer would only function at 2.4ghz not 5ghz and filesharing was slow.
After much research and talking to Apple Support, I purchased a Time Capsule. I'm very pleased with the result:
    1) with time capsule, I can eliminate the windows laptop home server
    2) wireless speeds are very good and so is the range
    3) the dual band wireless allows seamless connection and use of my wireless printer at 2.4ghz even while the mackbooks are on 5ghz
    4) backups are a breeze
    5) file sharing access is much better and more seamless

The set-up of the time capsule was so easy to set up.

I had two Iomega network drives that each died after about a year. When the 3rd was DOA, I decided to spend the extra money and try the time capsule. Setup was much easier and so far (one year later) its still working fine. I wish it was possible to add a drive to incrase capacity, but so far no complaints. I can see the drive from all my devices (laptop, desktop, iphone and ipad). Perfromance is not great, but as good as the Iomega. Wireless range is much better than my previous G router and I like the guest function. I would recommend and will but another when this one dies.

Weak router for a home network

I'm guessing the TC 2TB is great if you have a small network (3 ethernet ports or less). BUT if you plan on using the TC 2TB for routing you entire wired house plus your wireless needs, good luck. Once I started adding on 5 or 8 port gig switches, the entire network slow down and would stop working completely.

If you have Apple TVs or Sat. stay away from the TC 2TB. I just waisted 3 days of my life troubleshooting. If Apple came out with gig switches and a router capable of handling more traffic, I might write a better review.

    Dead in 2 years

    • Written by from Orlando

Like most folks have said this was great until it stopped.

This was my second TC that died within 2 years. I had the good fortune with the first one to at least die within warranty. This one was a refurb (which I've had great experience with Apple refurb products) and once again it died. Doesn't even light up. Looks like the major issue with the product is the power supply.

Do yourself a favor and buy the Airport Extreme instead and attach a hard drive. At least that way you have hard drive storage expansion options.

Apple should ditch the TC product if it can't get it's quality control straigthened out. At this point is only a drag on the legendary Apple brand.

Bought a TC some 3 years ago. I have never had anything up and running falwlessly so fast....home network, desktop, pc, backup's, printers, iPhones, etc......I was completely sold on this product!!! then like many others I now see, time came up when the TC decided its usefull life had come to an end, and simply died a year ago. After 12 months I decided to re-consider replacing it so I came to the site and after reading all comments have decided, NO WAY! NO MORE TC'S FOR ME!!!

As with so many other reviews I have seen on here, our Time Capsule worked perfectly fine for about two years and then just quit working. It will not even power up and of course the warranty is no longer valid. I would guess that a lot of these great reviews will turn into one star reviews within two years. It would be a great product if it would just KEEP WORKING!!!!!

    unreliable, constantly needs resetting

This is the worst apple product I own. It needs constant resetting and the backups can take hours. Seriously, I have to keep my machine running for 7 hours to let it back up. Don't waste your money on this product for the back up functionality it purports to provide. It's not worth the hassle.

    Great Hard Drive

This product works ! The only problem with it- it needs enough space around and and it needs to sit in a cool spot. The only problem with the design I see is heat. My drive is going on 3 years. Remember- keep this thing our of draws-desks and any enclosed space. Ventilation is key.

This product will die right after the warranty expires. The power supply in mine died after 14 months and I lost everything I backed up on it. Apple suggested I buy a new one but since the reason I bought it in the first place was so that I wouldnt lose all my data I decided that was idiotic. I can't believe Apple has fallen so far.

    Saved by the time capsule!

Have had my present TC for almost 2 years, never had to use. It was just there providing Wifi for my studio. Well, the Monday after Thanksgiving, my Mac crashed. Have no idea what caused it, but the TC saved the day. I had over 9 yrs. of client data base in QB & other materials that there is no other way to access except on my Mac. Took 4 hrs. to restore, but without the TC I would not be in business. Thank You, Thank You APPLE.

    Unreliable

Initial setup was easy for 1st Mac, second Mac would not recognize network at all. After much troubleshooting we were able to get the network and Time Capsule to work with both Macs. Then after a month we lost the Time Capsule function. Then we lost the network function. After a firmware upgrade, it worked again for about three months. Now the Time Capsule is bust again.

Overall, we are very disappointed in the the performance and reliability of this product. We were hesitant at first to buy a Time Capsule, but a lot of reviews made it it look like the new version was more reliable. I would have to say NO. Safe your money and find a more reliable product.

    Too Fragile

I have had two TCs and both of them failed before the end of the second year. Considering, that the limited warranty lasts only 1 year I was left empty handed. It is very frustrating that Apple would sell a product that cannot last, even more when it is sold as being a reliable and easy way to backup your files!

Well I have been using a time capsule for 4 years now and just yesterday I had to use it for the first time. It worked flawlessly and quickly considering it had so much data to transfer. Solid product, does what you need it to.

I bought one of these, as we have 2 MacBooks and an iMac that we use for personal and home businesses and thought I better have something in case I lose a drive on one. I've owned many Macs since 1993 and have NEVER had a drive failure. Well, after 10 months of having the TC, a MacBook Pro had a logic board failure, due to a power outage. It corrupted and damaged the drive. Had both replaced at the Apple Store. So what do I do now? I took the MBP home and restored it. Everything was as good as new! Everything was restored, including the desktop picture and icons. I'm a believer.

Planning on getting the 3 TB TC for our offsite business.

Not durable - weak link in your system

    A money pit!!! Won't last!

I was excited when I was able to set up a wireless network in my home and back up my data with the same device. I noticed it was always very warm to the touch - an experience a majority have reported - not good for electronics. I was hoping it would last, but very disappointed when it did not. (You'll be lucky to get 2 years out of it [warranty good for 1 year])

Can't repair them... Apple "Genius" said, "It's broke" and after asking what he suggested, he said, "We have other ones for sale" end of story...Looking for a better and more reliable solution for a sensible price... don't waste your money!

    TC 2TB

I have owned the TC 2TB for more than a year now and all I can say is "wow"..... great product, wifi works incredibly good. I had a Linksys router before and it would drop people so I switched to the TC 2TB.

I save my backups to this drive and another internal hd on my Windows 7 PC (cant have too many back ups).

BTW. This drive works just fine with Mac and with Windows PCs. I transfer files between the Windows based PC and my MacBook Pro. I have never had any issues.

My only wish was that the 3TB version had been available when I bought my unit.

    I highly recommend this product.

OMG! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!
? What... People post and rate failures after 18 months of using a 5 month-new product ? even considering warp of time/space continuum, these folks are not terra-based.
Anyway, - I'm a tech consultant -and... "Macintosh" lineage customers (mac-intosh-style "Customers", Gang Nam or whateva) want their Computer to Work for *Them* without Thinking about "Computer" themselves -great (yeah, me too.. big deal.. -but Wintel support pays better ;-/).
but, when, i see assertive declarations like:
[ After searching on-line for a solution it appears that this is a major issue for all Time Capsules. I am now outside … More ]
... I suspect these systemic failure reports ALL are "a major issue for all Time Capsules" due to product design: supplied-power-quality , ventilation , and cooling ...
ALL Apple products SHOULD INCLUDE: supplemental constant-voltage power; liquid-cooled heat-pumps; self-cleaning sub-micron/HEPPA air-intake filters; and 3600 psi air-burst jets located at each external port.

\/\$ : Brown-outs and unplanned power cycles... *are* all bad for "Computer"
”“ : "like clock work" excessive heat and very low-humidity... *are* all bad for "Computer"
=3 : Dust, bunnies, soot, sprites, paper, entrails... *are* all bad for "Computer" ventilation!
? Air-burst jets ? YES, even JPL/NASA Mars rovers succumb to months of debris build-up...

=O : also, (*obviously*) Lightening, static-electricity, and sharing the same power cord as a 20A multi-vibrator with phase-lock-looping... *are* all bad for "Computer"
