Not durable - weak link in your system

    • Written by from CHESAPEAKE

    A money pit!!! Won't last!

I was excited when I was able to set up a wireless network in my home and back up my data with the same device. I noticed it was always very warm to the touch - an experience a majority have reported - not good for electronics. I was hoping it would last, but very disappointed when it did not. (You'll be lucky to get 2 years out of it [warranty good for 1 year])

Can't repair them... Apple "Genius" said, "It's broke" and after asking what he suggested, he said, "We have other ones for sale" end of story...Looking for a better and more reliable solution for a sensible price... don't waste your money!

Stopped working right after warranty was up

    • Written by from Westbrook

So right after the warranty is up, the drive quits, won't backup the computer, can't access files anymore, etc. I thought I was the only one, but after reading the reviews below, I think this is one of Apple's mistakes....Now I have a $300 wireless adapter and no workable drive. Don't buy it.

    Waste of Money

    • Written by from Dorchester

Used in conjunction with my iMac, iPad. This is the second one I have gone through. The fist one never worked properly had made several calls to support and two repairs until it was replaced. Now the new one as lasted just over 18 months and now the disk is failing taking all the back up with it. More trouble than its worth. Save your money and buy an external back up so you can do it your self, and get the cheeper Air port as thats what the Time Capsule turns into. Now all I get to do is pay to have it fixed, yet again, buy a new one (that won't happen) buy something different (already looking onto it) write a review and make a complaint (that I'm sure will go no where, or anyone will care)

Will Work Great Right Up Until.....

    • Written by from Denver

The time capsule is an elegantly designed easy to use device that is poorly engineered. In an attempt to shove 10 lbs of stuff in a 5lb box the device is destined to one day overheat and fail completely. Mine lasted a little over 2 years before having its terminal event. As with most things Apple, you can take it to the local retail store where the Genius will tell you it can't be fixed and offer you a full price replacement. The second time around I opted for an Airport Extreme (less stuff, same case) and am trying the backups on a Western Digital hard drive plugged into the airport via USB. We'll see how that goes! Perhaps someday they will actually design this device properly. Of course, it is pleasant to look at... :(

Worked well until it completely failed

    • Written by from Fort Wayne

This worked well fro three years until it completely failed, leaving me with a worthless brick filled with my now unreachable back-ups. Repair tech identified it as common overheating problem that fried the power supply. Unit was on shelf all by itself w/ 3+ feet clearance all around.

    Very Unsatisfactory

    • Written by from Dun Laoire

Product didn't protect me as advertised. Caused massive slowdown in my Macbook pro, forcing me eventually to reinstall entire system. When I wished to recover my files following reinstall, it usually tells me I'm not authorised to reach them. I also wish to use it as a server for iTunes but everytime I log in to iTunes, it has forgotten that the time capsule is the default disk. All in all a waste of money.

Don't count on it to save you...

    • Written by from San Diego

These are a great concept but poorly executed. My first one failed in year 2, and the second one has become unusable in year 1. The early ones had inadequate cooling, and frequently failed at 18 mos. (out-of-warranty) The replacement one, which I had to purchase (out-of-warranty) has made it's own internal hard drive unavailable on the network, with less than 10 days left on the warranty. My suggestion is to purchase an Airport Extreme, and go find a quality network storage device to attach. Good luck :)

An unexpected error occurred. Try again.

    • Written by from FPO

I've had this product for 7 hours and nothing good has come of it. Loading errors, connection errors etc. I'm going to get my money back as soon as possible.

    Wow. Not impressed.

    • Written by from SHEPPARD AFB

I've had my TC for over a year. And over that past year, I have "reset" it to factory settings at least a dozen times. Really. Pathetic.

I have 20mbps internet from TWC. I regularly see 25mbps when things are working right. Then, out of the blue, it will slow to 0.40mbps. Then, another speed test reveals 0.09mbps.

After much searching online, hundreds of hundreds of other people have similar problems with the TC as a wifi router. There are a dozen "fixes" out there, but none are official from Apple, they are just wannabe experts sharing what worked for them. Things like "just reset it to factory settings" and "revert to older firmware" are pretty prevalent.

Problem is, these are all bandaids for what appears to be a pretty large, and IGNORED problem from Apple.

    Get it together guys.

And I am certainly not a hater. I'm typing on a 2011 iMac, connected to my iPhone 4S. My wife has a Macbook and an iPhone as well. I just want a product that I paid (overpaid) very well for to work properly. Having to "reset to factory settings" is a PITA when you have multiple items connected to the wifi (printer, phones, etc).

Apple, please fix this problem. It's frankly, pathetic.

    Worst apple product ever......

    • Written by from Las Vegas

When I bought my 2TB time capsule I heard of a lot of bad comments but I did not believe on it since I was to confident that apple products are always the best. Now my time capsule just stop working after two years of using it, since I'm using it as a back up, now I cannot open all files that I save from my time capsule. I hope apple can do something about this. AT LEAST HELP ME TO RETRIEVE MY FILES.....

Did not last long - do not recommend

    • Written by from Benbrook

The wireless portion does not play well with PC devices. In addition, the backup HD began to fail shortly after warranty ended. Kept it for the router portion and switched to a different backup HD. The router completely failed within 12 months of this and is dead. I do not recommend this product. For reference, I have iMac, 2 iPads, and MBP. All those products have been excellent but this one was a complete waste of money.

    Mine lasted about a year

    • Written by from West Lebanon

At $499 for the 12 months it was operating, I'd have been much better advised to buy an Airport Express and back up on the Cloud.

    Very Unreliable

    • Written by from Deerfield

The 2 TB time capsule has proven to be very unreliable. The wireless connection started to fail very quickly after purchase and has gotten worse to the point now (just over a year of ownership) where it doesn't connect wirelessly at all.

Troubleshooting the drive has also proven to be extremely frustrating.

2TB of storage with automatic backups would be nice as promised, but with all the bugs encountered with it, the time capsule is not worth the extra expense over the competition and is certainly not a recommended Apple product.

    2nd failed Time Capsule

    • Written by from Baltimore

2nd Time Capsule power supply failed last week just beyond warranty. Will not buy this device or anything like it again. I thought the new models mitigated heat with green drives but am now thinking this product may be a lemon. In both cases I was left with the option of trade in which would result in total loss of my valuable data. Each incident resulted in protracted heat gun process to open up and remove the drive and all the lost time and down time involved.

Great router but not so good for backups

    • Written by from Waltham

I upgraded to this from AirPort Extreme because I want my 2 laptops to backup wirelessly. Today I need to restore one of my MBP but the Time Capsule will not let me connect to it and retrieve the backup file. After hours of worthless trying and still going no where I ended up just rebuild my machine from scratch.

It's a great router that can't rely on for backup. I would just get the AirPort Extreme instead.

The worst product Apple has ever made!

    • Written by from Diamond Point

I read a dozen reviews and a lot of them said negative things about how the box drops the connection. I decided to try out the Time Capsule for myself and within TWO days I'm already starting to have issues. If anyone reading this has one PC in their home then do NOT BUY THIS ITEM! I have almost all Mac computers but my Fiance has a Dell, when she connects she can barely get online half of the time. I have spoken with Apple and there is nothing they can do about the issue, the posts online that I have found about the issue all say Apple has to update the firmware to fix the issue which they have not done since 2011. Please Please Please take my advice and do your research first, you don't have to go much further than just typing in "Time Capsule drops internet connection", you will see how many issues they are having. Another thing, god forbid you try and backup your computer or transfer a file to the Time Capsule, it KILLS the internet!

    Horrible

    • Written by from Jersey City

This product worked for a week, and then all my backups started to fail. It is the worst Apple product ever made. Total headache. If you want to safely backup your MacBooks, I go with a non-Apple product on that one.

    Dead after 18 months

    • Written by from Mililani

This is my second time capsule that has died after 18 months. Apple needs to do something about this product. I don't think it is a coincidence. It is annoying that is dies just out of warranty. I have had a linksys router for over 7 years and it is still running strong with heavy daily use.
