    Mine lasted about a year

At $499 for the 12 months it was operating, I'd have been much better advised to buy an Airport Express and back up on the Cloud.

Everything is perfect until the hard drive crashes...

Using a Time Capsule for back-up´s is an easy and convenient solution. Airport and access are fast and safe. Nevertheless, it is better not to rely to much on the storage solution.
My Time Capsule crashed and after less than one year in use. Apple might provide repairing service, but the data is lost anyway.
Having learned from this bad experience, the next home use backup-drive will have at least two HD´s and will run as a RAID 1 system.

    Unreliable wireless

Unboxed this on a Saturday and setup was very smooth with the utility on my MacBook Pro. Connected without any issues. I also connected two iPhones to the guest network without any problems. Also, let me note that my setup was very basic. I essentially only changed the SSID, wireless password, and guest wi-fi password. Nothing fancy or overly technical.

Sunday - this is where the problems started. In the morning the MBP or iPhones would not connect. Did the standard unplug, replug and the MBP then connected, however the iPhones would not find the guest network. Long story short, every day since Sunday this device needs to be unpluged and plugged in for the wireless to work. Unhooked it last night and put in a Netgear WNDR4500 and it maintained connection since last night on all devices. I know wireless can be goofy at times, but I am convinced this is a flawed product at the core.

    Unreliable

Initial setup was easy for 1st Mac, second Mac would not recognize network at all. After much troubleshooting we were able to get the network and Time Capsule to work with both Macs. Then after a month we lost the Time Capsule function. Then we lost the network function. After a firmware upgrade, it worked again for about three months. Now the Time Capsule is bust again.

Overall, we are very disappointed in the the performance and reliability of this product. We were hesitant at first to buy a Time Capsule, but a lot of reviews made it it look like the new version was more reliable. I would have to say NO. Safe your money and find a more reliable product.

    Buggy and limited

The idea is nice but the implementation is poor:
    - Every hour my MBP slows down significantly for a while (this is with an SSD drive)
    - Latest firmware v7.6.1 is very buggy, disk disconnects randomly and frequently (net connection is fine) with the only cure being a reboot.
    - You get 2TB of disk space but there's no way to instruct it to leave half of it allocated for your files

    2nd failed Time Capsule

2nd Time Capsule power supply failed last week just beyond warranty. Will not buy this device or anything like it again. I thought the new models mitigated heat with green drives but am now thinking this product may be a lemon. In both cases I was left with the option of trade in which would result in total loss of my valuable data. Each incident resulted in protracted heat gun process to open up and remove the drive and all the lost time and down time involved.

I went through two portable drives (Lacie and Hitachi) to back up my MB Pro and MB Air. Apple gave me full credit upon return. Went with the TC to have automatic backup without cords, etc. Setup was no problem and it also serves as my wifi. Range is even better than the Airport Extreme which is a plus. Seems like this product is either 1 star or 5 stars. Fortunately I can give it 5 stars. It is also very quick. Even the initial backup of my Mac Books took less than an hour each for 100GB of data.

    Once again Apple...I am impressed

I just returned a netgear n600 wireless router....i got really impressive mbps and range but of course when i attempted to readyshare both a new enclosure or jump drive it recognized neither. And of course the advertised 24/7 support actually does not come with the product despite being in bold on the box.

Solution, my new 2TB Time Capsule, in five minutes (and im not exaggerating) I have all of my movies, music, and had the option to set up time machine back up upon installation. And my new wireless network basically setup itself.

A salesman from another retailer told me my connection and MBPS might suffer by going with this option and of course he was .... WRONG!.

I am getting my 85-95 mbps, just as beautifully as ever.. Apple you make my computer life a lot less of a hassle...thanks.

One of the rare apple products that does not meet their standards! Within two years, drive fails and cannot be replaced since it is mounted on the mother board! From day one, it needs a lot of reset and drive needs reformat to work! Every hour and day back up sounds very good but in the reality, hardware cannot stand it. Great disappointment to see apple products like this!

    Time Machine To Time Capsule

    • Written by from Salem

53 of 67 people found this useful

Rating 4 stars. Would be 5 stars if not for the following problem:

Cannot use Time Machine backups when changing to Time Capsule.

You can upgrade drive size for Time Machine To Time Machine and Time Capsule to Time Capsule. You cannot upgrade Time Machine to Time Capsule databases. Apple support confirmed this. There are some hacks on the internet but I would not recommend them until Apple approves. Apple needs a better way to upgrade drive size and changing the databases, recommend a button on Time Machine preferences to move database with the above mentioned options. Apple would then fix the database so moving either forward or backward would not be an issue and easy for us consumers.

If you need those backups suggest you let Time Capsule backup the old Time Machine backup files and then restore to a drive if the Time Machine Databases are needed.

do not buy its not really a bck up when it fails you lose all your data any

There is no NAS feature or RAID feature, the router configuration works no better then my 50 dollar linsky router.

If your drive fails you cannot get your data back so this is useless. Their are to many options out there for less than the cost of this or equal the amount with better quality and actual protection. these only last one year also.

If you have to have a apple product because you are a apple fan purchase the airport extrem with a hard drive with raid protection.

I had mine for over 2 years now. We had a power issue and it stopped working properly. I thought my computers were defective, then I called Apple Support, and all what I needed to do is do a hardware reset, and it continues to work perfectly. All the data stored remained there, and connectivity is far beyond any router I ever had.

I've used numerous number routers and NAS in the past. I even built my own router using Linux machine before Linksys exist. The Time Capsule is really a big leap in the setup. It's extremely simple to set it up without those complex DHCP, uPNP, gateway parameters complicating the setup. It just works right out of the box. Now it's time-machining two of my macs at home.

Does not work as a wireless client

    • Written by from Holland Park

49 of 60 people found this useful

If you use a Time Capsule as a wireless base station, it works fine. But, if you want it to join an existing network, you'll be out of luck. You can join an existing network, but you'll get shocking performance: 2MB/sec absolute maximum, and < 1MB/sec most of the time.

Spent an hour with Apple support, and they told me that "a Time Capsule is not meant to be used as a wireless client". (Never mind that you can explicitly configure it that way.)

For me, that's a show stopper because I wanted to physically separate my backup drive from my Mac Pro; I cannot use the Time Capsule as a base station because the cable modem access point is right where the computer is.

The recent 7.6 firmware upgrade did not fix this. I'm very disappointed with the the entire thing. The one reason I bought the Time Capsule was to have a physically separate backup drive, but it cannot be used that way.

Just got the time capsule and it was extremely easy to set up and start using as a wireless access point and as a hard drive and time machine backup. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because i would like more usb ports for attaching other drives and printers.

Bought a TC some 3 years ago. I have never had anything up and running falwlessly so fast....home network, desktop, pc, backup's, printers, iPhones, etc......I was completely sold on this product!!! then like many others I now see, time came up when the TC decided its usefull life had come to an end, and simply died a year ago. After 12 months I decided to re-consider replacing it so I came to the site and after reading all comments have decided, NO WAY! NO MORE TC'S FOR ME!!!

Great Product - Flawless and SIMPLE

I have owned this product since October and have not had any issues mentioned below. For the first few months I set the TC up as an added remote disc on my 2Wire network. The main reason for this decision is due to ATT's refusal to open up their software to allow the 2Wire Gateway to be used as a bridge. That is the only issue I have had with the product's use.

I recently promoted the device to a secondary router so that I could take advantage of the newer WIFI protocols. Again, after a little trial and error on the Uverse side, we were up and running.

Now if I could use this and not be forced to suffer with the Uverse gateway.

Many hours lost to the Time Capsule

We had our time capsule repaired twice by Apple and it always came up with error messages after install. We found out that it really was only good for taking our time and encapsulating it in a place where we would never get it back. Love the other product I have bought from Apple, but the time capsule was not one of them.

Absolutely the Highest Grade Router for Consumer Users

    • Written by from Bedford

This is my second (really 3rd) Time Capsule. My first is the 2nd generation 1TB model and this new one is the 4th generation 2TB model. The (New) 2TB model is connected directly to my cable modem and the (Old) 1TB model is connected with ethernet cable in another part of my house. I've got the 2nd gen. TC's set up as Roaming off Bridge) and now I have WiFi (strong) everywhere in my house.

BTW, I've had the 2nd generation TC for a little over 2 years now without any problems what so ever. I suspect the (New) 4th generation will be a long lifer as well.

Like I said in my title Apple Time Capsule's are the highest grade rougher for consumer users, and as good as some commercial grade routers. The disk drives Im not so sure about other than, it hasn't failed me once.

I did have the 1st generation 500GB model, and it didn't last 6 months. So Apple replaced it with the (newer at the time) 2nd generation 1TB model (currently still have) for FREE. That's great customer service......hopefully the 4th generation model will be another great Apple product like my 2nd generation is.

    Loving it!

I was wondering whether to get this or not, but I am sure glad that I did. We have a iMac and a MacBook Pro and plan on getting a MacBook Air in the near future. We never backed up any of our systems because you had to plug the hard drive up, etc. This is so easy as the commercial back in the day said " set it and forget it".
It also increase the speed of my wireless connection by 10 mbps, WOW. We used to run at 15 mbps now we are averaging 25 mbps on the wireless Macs in our home.
The only downside is that once in a while the Macs cannot find the time capsule to do a back up and then it suddenly appears, don't get it but oh well as long as it backs up, I am fine.
We also use it to store data that I don't want cluttering up the MacBook Pro.
I would tell anyone to get this product it is well worth the money.
