    Works Great/HOme Office--Bad Reviews Wrong!

    • Written by from Dripping Springs

I read all of the bad reviews but my experience is different. I had one of the older 500gb units in service for 3-4 years of continuous use in a homne office environment with lots of users. It failed today, probably a power supply, and I freaked when I saw the reviews about speed and other problems. I was using my first Time Capsule for back-ups of a MacBook and a MacBook Pro, as a network for internet (including a hard-wire to my BluRay DVD player), a networked printer, and a network drive to share files between my MacBooks and an old Dell Dimension B110 that I still use. I also had the Time Capsule networked with an AirPort Express and an AirPort Extreme to extend my network around my property. I never had any problems until it just suddenly died--probably a power supply.

I bought the 2TB Time Capsule at the local store, brought it home, hooked it up just like my old TC, plugged it in and it immediately re-created my network complete with all passwords and settings. All of my computers logged in without a problem, the network printer worked immediately from all computers with no tweaks as if nothing had changed. I even have a security cam on the network wirelessly (that was almost impossible to get connected initially since it was made for a PC environment and has a kazillion little settings that must be set perfectly). The only issue I had was with the Dell not accessing the network drive (though it logged onto the network with no problems), but this was because the shared folder name was different on the new TC than it was on the old TC so the Dell did not recognize the new folder--that was an easy fix.

My old TC was a bit slower for internet (I have Exede Satellite with 12 mps down) than with the modem connected directly to my MacBook Pro (a difference you could notice, but not enough to outweigh the benefits of a network but it did slwo my speeds), but I never had problems with dropped connections. I was able to compare speeds on the new TC by surfing with a direct connection and then a few minutes later connected to the TC and there is not a noticeable difference in speed from a direct connection so the newer TC is noticeably faster than my old one. It is true with my old TC that if there is a back-up going on in the background speeds slow since the TC is in use, but I haven't been able to check this out yet on the new TC.

I know from experience that almost every problem I have ever had with any of my AirPorts or TC's has been settings that I had wrong or firmware updates that needed to be done via my computer with the utility software. This is especially true if you have more than one unit in use as part of the same network like I do--they must all match firmware versions or they are buggy. I have had this network with Panther, Leopard, Snow Leopard and now Lion and have no problems at all. I also have lots of house guests who use PC's and none of them have any problem getting onto or staying on my network which is secure with a password and not open.

If you have a small business like me and need to be able to install or get back up and running quickly and easily without hiring someone who knows what they are doing, then Time Capsule is classic Mac--just plug and play. I do wish my old TC had lasted longer, but given that it ran 24/7/365 for at least 5 years I can't complain (and the Airport Extreme I am using is what I had before I bought my first TC--I didn't want to throw it out so I just used it to extend my network--and it is still running.

Wine + MacBook=disaster , but saved by TM

    • Written by from San Diego

Split wine on my MacBook.. destroyed it. I had a desktop iMac, and found that not only can you restore a TM backup to a new Mac, you can restore a TM backup to a (new) account on another machine.
I was up and working on the iMac once the restore from TM finished without losing any work. It just worked brilliantly.

    LUV IT

This made a huge difference in speed alone, I would have to wait for more than 10minutes for any video to load up from You Tube on my Mac and PC., now on my 2 PC's, 2 Macs, 2 Mac books and an iPad 4g LTE , all up and working at lightning speeds. I now click on a video and its starts playing immead, no buffering at all, loads right up. I like the Guest feature to use our WiFi, this way I don't have to tell my guests or type my password on their device. I love the storage that I don't think i can ever fill up and backing up my quickbooks is automatic now. Love this product. and totally recommend for a home or small office.

    Fantastic!!

TM provides great wireless coverage throughout my 3,100 square foot house -- on all 3 levels. It's signal is strong enough to stream to Apple TV & wireless printers. Plus, you can back up all your important data. Don't wait, just buy it!!

Seriously great, seriously practical, and seriously simple

    • Written by from Dubai

I have had the Airport Extreme for a while now, and then bought the 1TB Time Capsule to add to the network, and then decided to get the 2TB as well.

Now you can tell the setup of my network, but best is that i use the 1TB solely for back ups, the 2TB TC replaced all these external hard drives that i have around with data on them, specially the bulky external HD next to my Mac Mini, and the Airport Extreme is used (well, i used one of these shattered around passport hard drives) to stream media from on the network via USB attached hard drive where everyone in my family can share files on my network from Mac, PC, or even IOS devices.

Love it, so great, and makes storing digital life a breeze

    Saved by the time capsule!

    • Written by from Hayes

Have had my present TC for almost 2 years, never had to use. It was just there providing Wifi for my studio. Well, the Monday after Thanksgiving, my Mac crashed. Have no idea what caused it, but the TC saved the day. I had over 9 yrs. of client data base in QB & other materials that there is no other way to access except on my Mac. Took 4 hrs. to restore, but without the TC I would not be in business. Thank You, Thank You APPLE.

    One fine machine!

    • Written by from Roswell

My family has had various wireless routers over the years, Linksys, Netgear, and 2Wire modem/wi-fi router, just to name a few. These were not very reliable and we decided to try out the Apple Time Capsule since we have been converting much of our tech products over to Apple. THIS MACHINE IS GREAT!!! We have a mix of PC and Mac computers and all connect flawlessly to the internet and all you AirPort utility to connect to the Time Capsule just fine. PC AirPort Utility is sketchy but usable. I have only had to reset the Time Capsule one time after being on and used for 3 months straight without being shut off. It handles power outages just fine. When power comes back on it boots right back up and goes back to work without any assistance. The Time Capsule backs up our Macs with ease. Still trying to figure out if the PC can use the 2 TB storage for backup as well. I would HIGHLY recommend this product to anyone with a Mac computer in the house.

    Great Product

I have had a 1 TB Time Capsule that is being used to back up 5 to 6 machines and has been a great asset. I replaced a 1 TB LaCie fire wire drive because I wanted to be able to do the back up wirelessly. It has worked great for almost 2 years so far and I feel that I will probably fill it up before I wear it out. Good Job Apple. Stay strong

    Great product

    • Written by from PORTLAND

My Time Capsule has functioned flawlessly for three years now. I have two Macs backing up via Ethernet and two Macs wirelessly and I have never had a problem, until I ran out of space on the Time Capsule drive, or to be specific, only 2 weeks of time being backed up.

The Time Capsule is a great product. My only recommendations are #1 Use it to back up Macs and don't pollute it with a PC, use it for what it's intended for. #2 If your backing up multiple Macs get the larger Time Capsule so that you don't run out of space for a long time.

One last note. Purchase Applecare to extend your support. It's worth the peace of mind. The Applecare people are the best support in the industry and I'm not associated with Apple, I just use the product, allot!.

    GREAT product!

    • Written by from Englewood

I had this up and running in about 10 minutes with all my passwords set up etc. I used to use an old wifi router just for that and I was getting speeds of 2-3 mbps which is comparable to a wireless internet card from a cell phone provider or your phones internet. With this product i have been able to pull 20 mbps with the "n" capabilities thus making my INCREDIBLY HIGH comcast bill worth it just a little more, it makes my apple TV purchase worth it (i regretted it because it was such a bad experience with the slow router when ordering movies or playing Netflix would buffer at certain parts of the movie), my iPad runs so much faster, my iPod runs so much faster, my Macbook Pro runs so much faster, my Samsung Galaxy S 2 runs so much faster...Common theme here! A $300 purchase seemed expensive, but it makes everything around me work better and makes me more productive. Not to mention i can back everything up and not have to worry about losing important information if I want to upgrade my Macbook Pro or if it crashes or anything like that. Definitely worth every penny.

    Pure Ease.

    • Written by from Tulare

The Time Capsule is well worth the price. I previously used an AirPort Express and I was maxing out the number of clients that it supported (Ten Clients). I have 2 PS3's, 2 iPhones, 2 computers, an iPad, an android phone and an Apple TV. When my friends came over and connected to my home network, things started getting crazy.

So I have my Time Capsule as the main router, and the Express is set up to join the network. Everything works great just had to make a few tweaks to maximize performance but it wasn't hard at all. Everything works amazing now! My step dad has an OLD Dell that does not have wifi in it, so I have the Express connected to his dell via Ethernet, so his dell isn't left out. Remember that the the express is receiving the signal wireless from the time capsule, so you can set the express anywhere! Love the AirPlay too!

As for backing up with TC everything went great! Of course that initial back up was lengthy but afterwards back ups are a breeze. Ive had it for almost a month and i don't regret it! I still have 1.74 Terabits left, Ive backed up my mac and my uncles mac.

    "Just Works"

    • Written by from Liverpool

Got this yesterday and have backed up my iMac and Macbook Air by simply turning Time Machine on once connected to the Time Capsule (which itself just takes 2 seconds using Airport Utility). I've also turned off the wireless on my BT Homehub 3 and let this do the work instead - works like a dream. Nice and fast and I love that I can set up guest networks so easily.

I had been advised to go for the cheaper option of plugging an external USB hard-drive in to the Homehub - but it was far too clunky and took a whole evening of messing around with obscure settings in an ugly, browser based user interface which seemed to have been designed by a hacker - without any joy. This worked straight from the box, has a lovely minimal interface (Airport Utility and Time Machine) and has taken all of my concerns about backing up off me.. it really does 'just work'.

    Excellent Product

    • Written by from Cambridge

The time capsule was so easy to set up and like apple says, it works seamlessly with time machine. I'm very happy knowing all of my data is backed up and I won't ever lose it. All of my photos are on my mac, and if I lost them it would be terrible. The only things I'm concerned about is, as mentioned in other comments, it does heat up quite a bit, and I'm not talking about when it's doing a backup or whatever, just when it's on. The other thing is a lot of comments say it will last a year or two, hope that's not the case or that would change my rating greatly.

    Typical To Apple, great product.

Picked one of these up to protect my data in my old MAC. I was surprised at how heavy the time capsule was, this is a good sign of quality in my opinion. Packaging was simple, but elegant as usual. Set up was as easy as could be. Plug it in, click on the wifi icon next to the clock and there it is. Took me longer to climb under the desk to plug it in than it did to configure. First back up ran over night, and there it was this morning. All my devices connected to the new wifi network without a hitch.
