This is amazing... its wifi is fast and I get to back up all my data. The only complaint is it took a while to set up. Not the time capsules fault though, it was the isp.
If you own a computer this is a must buy.

Best Backup System Available for the Layman.

I have had zero issues with my TC. A little research is needed to fully use all of it's capabilities but it along with Apple's Time Machine software is simply wonderful.

TWO ISSUES: While I haven't had any issues yet, it really should have more ventilation. It definitely gets hot and I can see this being an issue. Also, I think it's been around long enough that Apple could have a thunderbolt port available now. This would speed up backups considerably as well as keep the unit from working so hard (thereby keeping the temp at a more appropriate level).

NOTES: While it's a great backup system, I recommend having an external/portable backup system as well. I use time machine on a 2TB external once a month and keep it stored in my firesafe. If someone were to rob you or god forbid your house burns down- the backup system would be pretty useless.

    2.4GHz Band simply doesn't work

I recently replaced an AP Extreme with a 2TB Time Capsule- dual band. Easy set up and I was online in minutes. The only problem is that the only things that can now connect to it are my newer devices i.e.: iPhone 5, 2 MacBookPros, iPad 2. It's supposed to be running dual band to allow for older devices to connect. I can no longer connect my AP Express or my iPhone 4 to my home network. I can't tell if it's a firmware issue, IOS issue or both. 1000's of people are having the same problem. Seems like it would be a simple fix but I have literally tried everything but returning the unit which is next.

If you have a mix of devices I would stick with a regular AP Extreme and use an external hard drive plugged into it for backups.

Solved all my home network issues in an elegant way

We gradually have converted over to be an Apple household with MacBooks and iPads. We have a left over Windows notebook that I was using as a home server and a wireless printer. I also recently had to replace my cable modem and mistakenly chose a modem with built-in wireless n. Wireless speeds were inconsistent and would drop off. The wireless printer would only function at 2.4ghz not 5ghz and filesharing was slow.
After much research and talking to Apple Support, I purchased a Time Capsule. I'm very pleased with the result:
    1) with time capsule, I can eliminate the windows laptop home server
    2) wireless speeds are very good and so is the range
    3) the dual band wireless allows seamless connection and use of my wireless printer at 2.4ghz even while the mackbooks are on 5ghz
    4) backups are a breeze
    5) file sharing access is much better and more seamless

The set-up of the time capsule was so easy to set up.

    Best Router Ever!

I just got turn on to Apple products again after leaving to the Android camp from my iPhone. I started off with a 13" MacBook Air. I decided to get this after having to reformat and reinstall/upgrade my fiancee MacBook. Shipping was a little on the slow side but for something this good you should wait. When I got it all that was in the box was the Time Capsule and the power cord. By far the simplest setup I have ever done. Very user friendly. I have tried to us a Netgear router as an access point/repeater but I couldn't get it work because the Netgear is just too complicated. Also, I have been able to add my entire iTunes library to it and am able to access it seamlessly. Everything has been such a great experience that I decided to get another Apple product, the AirPort Express.

    Worth Every Penny

I have read many of the bad reviews for this product and certainly can appreciate negative opinions of a product that fails after a year. However, I thought that it was only fair to recount a positive experience. We have had our Time Capsule for about a year and a half and did not think much about it; until this morning. My five year old daughter decided to decorate my MacBook with magnets. After the crash all we could get was the apple logo. We used the OS X install disk and the Time Capsule and restored the machine. Granted, this could have been done with any external hard drive, as long as you remember to connect it. We could not be happier with this product.

I purchased it to replace router & hard drive that not working all the time. So far I like. It was plug and play with time machine on my iMac and Mac book Pro and Wifi was simple to install. The bonus ability to be able to print wireless with my Mac book pro was nice. All I needed was a driver to be installed. It works great and the signal seems to be stronger and faster then my Linksys N wrt150.

    3. It's backup is reliable.
    4. Very fast!!!
    5. Works with IPv6.
    6. Yet another reason why I only buy Apple products.

    These boxes are "pretty good".

    High notes:
    - Very easy to setup
    - Flawless Wifi usage. Fast too.
    - Built in Hard disk is very convenient.
    - Apple Time Machine backup software works perfectly with it.
    - Super Quiet and very small footprint.

    Low notes:
    - Very slow for network storage, even wired via Ethernet.
    - Sealed unit with no vents. Why? These things get HOT!
    - 1 died, but Apple replaced it without needing the old one back (Free 1TB HD!)

I highly recommend these boxes for Wifi + Backup + Ease + HD Convenience, but if you want a fast external hard disk the G-Technology boxes sold from Apple are better and faster, but of course you pay for that speed.

    Superfast router!

I used the best Time Warner router and was getting 1/2 the speeds of the Apple Time Capsule. And they charge me monthly to use it! Now I've got double the speed and a backup disk too. Absolutely floored. What a great product.

    Temperamental-too unreliable

    • Written by from Gloucester

45 of 70 people found this useful

I have come to grips with my Time Capsule, but find it somewhat temperamental, in an all Apple environment. It frequently is not backing up, giving an error message like unable to locate backup drive-even from my iMac which is physically connected by Ethernet cable or Mac Books on wifi. Frequently Mac Books and iPhones connected by wifi will lose internet access, although still connected to the network. Powering the unit off and back on resolves the problem-but is kind of a pain. (I have a second Netgear WAP that I switch over to when this occurs and don't want to reset the Time Capsule).

As a router it seems to work quite well, although a recent software upgrade (6.0) hides the DHCP table, which really helps if you need to diagnose a network issue or like to monitor your network. Better to keep the older version 5.6.

Not a bad unit, but not a really good one that I could recommend since it does not provide reliable backup or wifi.

There is iTV, and there's Time Capsule, but the two cannot play together to stream local movie files on the TC. Mind you Apple that not movies are bought through iTunes. Apple should also create an easier way to connect network printers (not thru USB) and this may be the game buster since they are the one who invented Bonjour.

I did not have internet at my apartment before I got this, so the day it arrived I went to the Cox store and signed up for their internet.

I got home and since I dont have a computer I used my iPhone to setup the Time Capsule and within 5 minutes (maybe less), I had WiFi in my apartment.

I havent tried the "hard drive" portion of it as I dont have a laptop (Im still waiting for the new ones to come out in July.

Its a great product, but the wireless and the USB connections are very slow. Why on earth would apple make this product USB 2.0 when most people using it are exclusively apple users and would prefer a Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 connection. I get
that not everyone is using apple, but give the applephiles the option, we as demographic of customers are not by default stupid.
To be honest with you, instead of the time machine, you are better off paying a bit more for a LaCie 2big hard drive and run it in RAID or JBOD configuration with a Thunderbolt connection, with the option to expand the memory.
Thats what I have done, you can purchase my Time capsule on eBay if you wish. Having transfer speeds up to 4Gb/s via Thunderbolt is far more attractive.

Weak router for a home network

    • Written by from The Woodlands

I'm guessing the TC 2TB is great if you have a small network (3 ethernet ports or less). BUT if you plan on using the TC 2TB for routing you entire wired house plus your wireless needs, good luck. Once I started adding on 5 or 8 port gig switches, the entire network slow down and would stop working completely.

If you have Apple TVs or Sat. stay away from the TC 2TB. I just waisted 3 days of my life troubleshooting. If Apple came out with gig switches and a router capable of handling more traffic, I might write a better review.

Best Router + Storage I've had!

    • Written by from Frisco

24 of 30 people found this useful

It is fast, reliable and offers all configuration options I want for my home network.

Recently we contracted Verizon, and with the proper steps on Verizon's router, you can just skip it and let the Time Capsule do all the routing. My internet speed improved about 30% to load web pages!

Then, it also has the storage.A NAS I recently bought is horrible compared to what a Time Capsule does. The NAS is costed the same, comes with the same capacity, is noisier, the interface is a nightmare and it doesn't let me access the discs as simple USB discs if I want to. Not to mention the bugs in network DNS and names, showing up double in my network because it is "Time Machine ready".

One more thing... people should learn that any device with a mechanical hard drive is subject to fail. I also have a 1st Generation 500Gb TC that never let me down, even after 4 years.

It is not that any other opinions are not true or points for wanting, it is just Apple has delivered me an ipod touch and this time capsule for amounts of money that may be steep to some but considering the performance and technology involved it is amazing. We are spoiled consumers. This device does everything a home user could need and it does it well. Think about how much money businesses can spend on I.T. I am lucky to have what in my mind is a $6,000 home mini-mac, macbook, ipad, ipod touch with time machine backup with integrated wifi for so much less dollars (I won the ipad). Think about how much is 2TB. The days of an 100MB zip drive or multi-CD backups are not that long ago. I highly recommend this device for Apple users. While it works on PC/Windows, I can not comment.

Needed a way to automatically back up my Mac. Learned this the hard way with my old macbook pro when it crapped out on me, had backed up before but didn't do it regularly. Plus I needed a better wireless router. It works great and if my Mac fails again, I think this will come in handy. The only issue I see with it is expandability. It needs thunderbolt or usb to add additional drives. I think it needs a household of five needs 7 to 10tb. 2 to 3tb will work on a two person household but no more. Outside of that small vice, it works great!!!
