Time Capsule won't work with Lion?

I used Time Capsule for over a year with no problems. After a power outage, however, the dating started from the day power was restored. Now it doesn't work at all since I installed Lion.

When I bought my 2TB time capsule I heard of a lot of bad comments but I did not believe on it since I was to confident that apple products are always the best. Now my time capsule just stop working after two years of using it, since I'm using it as a back up, now I cannot open all files that I save from my time capsule. I hope apple can do something about this. AT LEAST HELP ME TO RETRIEVE MY FILES.....

Product didn't protect me as advertised. Caused massive slowdown in my Macbook pro, forcing me eventually to reinstall entire system. When I wished to recover my files following reinstall, it usually tells me I'm not authorised to reach them. I also wish to use it as a server for iTunes but everytime I log in to iTunes, it has forgotten that the time capsule is the default disk. All in all a waste of money.

    Ok,

So here goes, I was very hesitant to purchase the time capsule because of the poor reviews from the last year. I spoke with customer support on line and was assured that the bugs had been worked out and the time capsule is working wonderfully. So I took the chance and purchased it. Well nervously I opened it and plugged it in. Well within 1 minute the network was up and running and the wireless is AMAZING! It is faster than anything I have ever used. So now it's time to back up all my files and my music and I am scared to death but SURPRISE! It was too easy to do and wicked fast! So in summary this is worth every single penny!

So now whats next! Thanks Apple

Power Supply Problem - 2nd Gen

    • Written by from Wyckoff

I wish I would have read these reviews before. I would have backed up my back-up...

I arrived home to discover that my TC had shut down and would not power up. I called Apple and the Tech told me that they could not service it because it was out of waranty. He recommended that I take it to a Third Party Service Provider, who later informed me that the power supply was fried. I am crossing my fingers hoping that I can recover my data (20K photos + music + movies + etc.).

Is this where we are supposed to back-up & store our important data?

Saved me buying a portable hardrive.

I absolutly love this product. My computer was so full of music and movies that I couldn't even enjoy the apple TV I purchased cuase the computer was just so slow. This made my day when I could store all my movies and music on it and then reference the information so that my computers and laptops were empty and free to run at peek efficency.

I have spoken to techs at apple about what I had purchased it for and they all said that there would be glitches since it's not what it was designed for. So far so good. But I would suggest that apple look into this and maybe design it for this purpose if some poeple are having problems.

This is by far the most usefull apple product I have bought yet.

    Thank You APPLE!

Don't count on it to save you...

These are a great concept but poorly executed. My first one failed in year 2, and the second one has become unusable in year 1. The early ones had inadequate cooling, and frequently failed at 18 mos. (out-of-warranty) The replacement one, which I had to purchase (out-of-warranty) has made it's own internal hard drive unavailable on the network, with less than 10 days left on the warranty. My suggestion is to purchase an Airport Extreme, and go find a quality network storage device to attach. Good luck :)

    too unreliable

My new time Capsule kept saying it was "unable to find hard drive" when attempting to backup with Time Machine over wifi. After restarting the device I could get my MBP to recognize it again, but after this happened too many times I decided to return it. Also on its third day the Time Capsule said there was a "verification" problem and had to backup my entire computer from scratch again, erasing any old backup. Oof. The point of having a backup is feeling safe, and I just don't feel safe with these errors. Too bad, such a great concept. But sometimes the Steve Jobs motto "it just works" just isn't true.

Easy set up and change over, but runs hot

This is my third TC and everything is functioning well, as in the past. But there is one exception with this new model. While the previous 3rd gen ran quite coolly, this new gen runs very warm to hot in normal usage, like the first gen model did. We will see if this gen experiences any of the heat related issues from the past.

    Dead in 2 years

    • Written by from Orlando

Like most folks have said this was great until it stopped.

This was my second TC that died within 2 years. I had the good fortune with the first one to at least die within warranty. This one was a refurb (which I've had great experience with Apple refurb products) and once again it died. Doesn't even light up. Looks like the major issue with the product is the power supply.

Do yourself a favor and buy the Airport Extreme instead and attach a hard drive. At least that way you have hard drive storage expansion options.

Apple should ditch the TC product if it can't get it's quality control straigthened out. At this point is only a drag on the legendary Apple brand.

    Good product but won't last

If you are ok buying one about ever year then its worth the cost. It does a good job but then the disc fails or in my case gets a point of slowing down so much the product is not useful. It would be a welcome product in my home again if Apple could offer a better drive that works faster and is more reliable. Plus there is only hourly back ups available which ends up once an hour killing your machine while the back up happens. Just not a very configurable tool. Also if you are running 10.7 or up it will crawl once you do the install.

    Great Wireless Router and Backup

    It just works!

I was quite impressed on how easy it was to setup and it's working great as my wireless router with more than 5 devices connected to it.

I've got two Mac Book Pro's on Time Machine and it backing up seamlessly. I had to recently use time machine as I had inadvertantly changed some images and it was simple to bring back those images to their previous state. Highly recommended!

And bonus I have an external hard drive now connected to it and I can access it through wifi. No longer do I need to hook it up to my computer anymore. Very Nice!

One of the weakest apple products

I thought it would be a good idea to have time capsule to back up my MacPro and my MacBook to the same drive. I connected my MacPro by ethernet cable and my MacBook through wifii. My MacBook was fine but my MacPro would freeze up had problems shutting down and would run a full back up over and over. Also it took sometimes up to 20 minutes to connect to time machine with the time capsule. Finally I decided to get a regular external hard drive for the MacPro , connected via USB and its working very good without any issues.

Don't waste your money get an airport extreme and an external hard drive, its cheaper and works better.

    Power Supply Issues

    • Written by from Toronto

Out of the blue, my 2nd generation time capsule stopped working. No signal/status light, and despite trying to reset it and following troubleshooting instructions. Turns out its the power supply. Seems to be a known issue with first generation TCs to just stop working after 500 or so days. Definitely not worth the price if this data back up device cannot outlast a 6 year old G5... Doesn't seem like they fixed the issue with other generations.

Not recommended as a share drive.

    • Written by from Boston

51 of 52 people found this useful

This may be a fine solution for a time-machine backup, but I do not recommend it as a wireless share drive for a time to centrally store and swap files.

We've been using a Time Capsule at our office as a share drive for a couple of years now. We haven't lost data (I've hear some say that they're unstable) but it is CONSTANTLY crashing my machine when trying to copy or delete relatively large chunks of data (500 MB+).

If you are only using this as a Time-Machine backup, or if you have limited need to move data, this might be a fine solution. But if you have large video, image, or other groups of files that you need to move, copy, or delete, steer clear.

We've finally gotten a LaCie server (15TB for about $1,700) and even migrating bit by bit from the Time Capsule machine has me banging my head against the desk. I want to throw this thing out the window.

I only give it three stars because I realize it may do a good job as a regular Time-Machine backup.

I am new to Macs. I wanted something that was easy to set up and worked with my Time Machine software. Set up was very easy and straightforward. For a newbie this was just what I wanted, and well worth the price. I can sleep well at night knowing that green light on the TC is glowing bright and protecting my files/photos/& music. I would highly recommend Time Capsule as a backup!

Best Way To Wirelessly Share LOTS OF FILES

    • Written by from Findlay

I first purchased a WD Live thinking that this was a great way to wirelessly share iPhoto and iTunes. However, it was to slow and took way too long to transfer files from my computer to the HD. I then purchased a 2TB WD Passport and a router with a usb hub on the back. This worked but was still sluggish. Finally, I purchased a Time Capsule and was able to transfer 400 + GB of data in less than 4 hours. This might have been even faster but I was transferring the data from a 2.0 usb, so this could have slowed it down a bit. So, not I have a 2 TB Time Capsule that I share all my photos, music, and movies across all my computers on my network. I also have a 2 TB WD plugged in to it for backup on Time Machine.

    power supply failure

The Time Capsule (2nd gen.) power supply went belly up one month short of th 3 year anniversary. Apple did replace the failed unit with overrnight delivery. That's the good news. The bad news is the 3 years of backups went out the window because Apple has no service for moving the data between the two units. I am using an external disk for my backups for now on. I'll use the internal disk for typical use and backup to the external USB drive.
