Purchased December 27, 2011 after hard drive in my MacbookPro (Early 2011) died earlier in the month. Apple was kind enough to replace with larger drive. I know of no other company that would've done that. Used it as a backup disk and wireless router until late August 2012 with very, very few issues. I really did forget about the backups because they occurred int he background seamlessly until Aug 2012, when I had an issue with MacbookPro that required Apple to reinstall Mountain Lion. Thankfully, I was able to restore from my backups on TIme Machine. Saved my hide. All my backups were there. Genius Bar recommended I keep my backsups, but begin a full new backup. Made sense. Since the, I've had a terrible time with TC. After backup errors persisted, I was advised to erase disk with old backups (not a huge deal, but definitely not my first choice). This worked until Mid-September when I was unable to get TM to backup to TC properly. Consulted support community with no luck. Apple Care rep was able to get things back to working order.

I just feel like since the problems began, it's taken too much time and energy than I would expect. Glad I have TC, but it definitely isn't as intuitive or user friendly as one should expect from Apple. Could definitely use some improvements. Despite problems, I think I'd still go with TC over other drives just because of support form Apple

Im still learning how to store the music but im getting the hang of it, i find it excellent in range and for the printers. but what i dont understand is that when they say compatible with the apple tv, is there some additional feature being applied because my old cisco router was working fine with it! Another problem is the further you go the less the speed which gets really annoying sometimes!

Great Product - Flawless and SIMPLE

I have owned this product since October and have not had any issues mentioned below. For the first few months I set the TC up as an added remote disc on my 2Wire network. The main reason for this decision is due to ATT's refusal to open up their software to allow the 2Wire Gateway to be used as a bridge. That is the only issue I have had with the product's use.

I recently promoted the device to a secondary router so that I could take advantage of the newer WIFI protocols. Again, after a little trial and error on the Uverse side, we were up and running.

Now if I could use this and not be forced to suffer with the Uverse gateway.

I was thrilled when I found about the Time Capsule, a hard drive and router all in one. These were the two things that I was looking for and sure enough I got them. The router portion of the TC works wonderfully, a huge improvement with my internet speed, literally night and day. The hard drive for the TC works wonderfully, the storage is just right for my school work and the back up is quick and simple. Plus, the installation of took me around 5 minutes, plus another 5 minutes to tinker around with stuff to perfect it to my liking. So for now, everything is running smoothly, plus it can also work as a portable hard drive so if I need to bring it with me where there is no internet connection, it works flawlessly. I would strongly recommend this product to anyone asking me about it, I have yet to see where all these low ratings have come from.

The one thing that does need to change is be able to adjust the time between back up's, because honestly. Every hour is totally unnecessary I would love if it backed up once a day.

Other than that, awesome product! Thanks again Apple, keep it up!

I bought this product 4 months ago. I've been extremely pleased so far ;) . I got multiple deviices like iPads, apple Tvs, Mac books and they work great around the house. Even the 2 Nest thermostats access without a problem.

Now, I will restore a backup to a new MacBook Pro tomorrow so we will see how it goes.

There is iTV, and there's Time Capsule, but the two cannot play together to stream local movie files on the TC. Mind you Apple that not movies are bought through iTunes. Apple should also create an easier way to connect network printers (not thru USB) and this may be the game buster since they are the one who invented Bonjour.

I've had my TC for over a year. And over that past year, I have "reset" it to factory settings at least a dozen times. Really. Pathetic.

I have 20mbps internet from TWC. I regularly see 25mbps when things are working right. Then, out of the blue, it will slow to 0.40mbps. Then, another speed test reveals 0.09mbps.

After much searching online, hundreds of hundreds of other people have similar problems with the TC as a wifi router. There are a dozen "fixes" out there, but none are official from Apple, they are just wannabe experts sharing what worked for them. Things like "just reset it to factory settings" and "revert to older firmware" are pretty prevalent.

Problem is, these are all bandaids for what appears to be a pretty large, and IGNORED problem from Apple.

    Get it together guys.

And I am certainly not a hater. I'm typing on a 2011 iMac, connected to my iPhone 4S. My wife has a Macbook and an iPhone as well. I just want a product that I paid (overpaid) very well for to work properly. Having to "reset to factory settings" is a PITA when you have multiple items connected to the wifi (printer, phones, etc).

Apple, please fix this problem. It's frankly, pathetic.

When I bought my 2TB time capsule I heard of a lot of bad comments but I did not believe on it since I was to confident that apple products are always the best. Now my time capsule just stop working after two years of using it, since I'm using it as a back up, now I cannot open all files that I save from my time capsule. I hope apple can do something about this. AT LEAST HELP ME TO RETRIEVE MY FILES.....

    Time Capsule Saved My Life!

I can't be more happy than I am with the purchase of Time Capsule. I contemplated the purchase when I was getting an iMac, thinking it was a little expensive & more than I had planned on spending, but now almost three years later when the hard drive on that iMac decided to just crash one day - EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING was saved & able to be restored from the Time Capsule! I can't say it was a super simple process for restore (b/c there were updates & new OS issues to get straight before I would call it a clean restore) but none of the issues were a Time Capsule issue - that puppy did as it was suppose to and I didn't lose a thing, not even a night's sleep - b/c EVERYTHING was saved!!! I love you Red Solo... I mean Time Capsule!!! ha ha ha Don't even blink an eye nor consider it a moment longer - BUY THE DANG THING, it'll save your life, one day! They say it's not if your hard drive crashes, it's when - you want to be prepared!!!

The idea is nice but the implementation is poor:
    - Every hour my MBP slows down significantly for a while (this is with an SSD drive)
    - Latest firmware v7.6.1 is very buggy, disk disconnects randomly and frequently (net connection is fine) with the only cure being a reboot.
    - You get 2TB of disk space but there's no way to instruct it to leave half of it allocated for your files

    "Just Works"

    • Written by from Liverpool

Got this yesterday and have backed up my iMac and Macbook Air by simply turning Time Machine on once connected to the Time Capsule (which itself just takes 2 seconds using Airport Utility). I've also turned off the wireless on my BT Homehub 3 and let this do the work instead - works like a dream. Nice and fast and I love that I can set up guest networks so easily.

I had been advised to go for the cheaper option of plugging an external USB hard-drive in to the Homehub - but it was far too clunky and took a whole evening of messing around with obscure settings in an ugly, browser based user interface which seemed to have been designed by a hacker - without any joy. This worked straight from the box, has a lovely minimal interface (Airport Utility and Time Machine) and has taken all of my concerns about backing up off me.. it really does 'just work'.

I have had a 1 TB Time Capsule that is being used to back up 5 to 6 machines and has been a great asset. I replaced a 1 TB LaCie fire wire drive because I wanted to be able to do the back up wirelessly. It has worked great for almost 2 years so far and I feel that I will probably fill it up before I wear it out. Good Job Apple. Stay strong

The wireless portion does not play well with PC devices. In addition, the backup HD began to fail shortly after warranty ended. Kept it for the router portion and switched to a different backup HD. The router completely failed within 12 months of this and is dead. I do not recommend this product. For reference, I have iMac, 2 iPads, and MBP. All those products have been excellent but this one was a complete waste of money.

Time Capsule - 2TB - Nearly two years later

    • Written by from El Paso

Deciding whether or not I wanted to buy the new dual band Time Capsule and as always, I decided to check out the reviews.
I am surprised to read that more than a few have had issues with their Time Capsule so I decided to put in my two-cents worth. First-off, using various brands of routers, I've had my house home-networked wirelessly for 15+ years, all served me well but brought me connectivity issues one-time or another. Since the coming of the iPod, my family has always used Apple products. My kids (now grown and gone) loved them because they were cool but for my wife and I, because of the convenience and seamless home network integration with our music, videos, apps and now most importantly, staying in touch with our kids, friends and workplaces.
Windows Vista and its compatibility issues with nearly every peripheral and software I had, drove me over the edge to purchase my first MAC All-in-One and with it, the Time Capsule Extreme. From the time I turned on my MAC and Time Capsule to the time I had every wireless device in my household seamlessly connected was maybe 20 minutes and my entire music collection wirelessly transferred in about an hour.
Since that time and to extend my network, I purchased the 2 TB Time Capsule and moved my Extreme to middle part of my home to strengthen my network for Apple TV and other Airplay compatible devices. In fact, the process was so simple and seamless that I purchased the Airport Express to extend the network to my “man area” in my back yard.
No connectivity problems, no hardware issues and no backup challenges. I can’t speak for everyone else but my experience with Airport devices have been nothing but positive.

    Very Unreliable

    • Written by from Deerfield

62 of 82 people found this useful

The 2 TB time capsule has proven to be very unreliable. The wireless connection started to fail very quickly after purchase and has gotten worse to the point now (just over a year of ownership) where it doesn't connect wirelessly at all.

Troubleshooting the drive has also proven to be extremely frustrating.

2TB of storage with automatic backups would be nice as promised, but with all the bugs encountered with it, the time capsule is not worth the extra expense over the competition and is certainly not a recommended Apple product.

    Ok,

So here goes, I was very hesitant to purchase the time capsule because of the poor reviews from the last year. I spoke with customer support on line and was assured that the bugs had been worked out and the time capsule is working wonderfully. So I took the chance and purchased it. Well nervously I opened it and plugged it in. Well within 1 minute the network was up and running and the wireless is AMAZING! It is faster than anything I have ever used. So now it's time to back up all my files and my music and I am scared to death but SURPRISE! It was too easy to do and wicked fast! So in summary this is worth every single penny!

So now whats next! Thanks Apple

BEST ROUTER AND NETWORK DRIVE EVER, I MEAN IT IS APPLE!

I have had this router for over a year now and it's been the best! I get up to 30 MB/s when transferring files from my Mac to the hard drive. It is everything I wanted for and more, I have a USB hub conected to it to give me 4 total USB ports. I have a extra hard drive and a printer connected. I get full speed from my Internet provider through this router, 50Mb/s download 25 upload, and for large files 10MB/s and 5MB/s upload. If you know a bit about Internet speed rating you'll know the longer the file and slower the speed gets. I have had to restart it twice since the hard drive wasn't popping up on my Mac but twice in more then a year is great for me. But for not connecting to the Internet I never had to restart it, and I literally only have restarted it twice the whole time I've had it. I use my 2 iPhones, iPad 2, 2 Macs all at the same time and never had a problem ever. I had an express which was perfect but needed a hard drive and what it cost for a 2TB hard drive I just bought the Extreme and I get more range and a network drive. And it's so easy to set up, you really can't go wrong here, it's definitely Apple worthy.
