Apple continues its hard work to take all the complexities of your life and simplifies it.
    This router "just works"

    WiFi Problems finally no-more!!!

    • Written by from Toronto

This is the first review I've written on this site, and I have to say that the greatness of this product made me do it.
I have always had wifi issues living in an apartment... dropped signal, loss of speed, unreliable network, and going through several routers by the big router companies did nothing to fix the issue.

Since getting this wonderful gadget, my mind has been put to ease as the signal is stronger than it ever has been, no drops ever, and no disconnects. Now that ethernet cable running through the house suddenly seems redundant!

Thank you Apple for an amazing router, which is made even better by sharing an external hard drive of photos through it! (NOTE: Must be in FAT32 or HFS+ file system.... NTFS is not supported)

    So easy to set up

    • Written by from Montreal

My AirPort Extreme is delivered at 13:50 and the set up is finished before 14:00. It's that simple! I'm not sure how easy to do it on a PC though. The design is, as always, slick and beauty. I haven't decided its location but I'm sure it will fit no matter where.

Great product but not much of an upgrade

    • Written by from Atlanta

I eagerly bought the Generation V Apple Extreme base station as an upgrade from a Generation III unit in order to hopefully extend the range and run Skype better. It is an excellent product but I was disappointed with the performance increase of the Generation V unit compared to the Generation III. Using the online Comcast speed check application, I found that the performance of the Generation III unit was actually slightly better close to the router, although the Generation V unit was superior 2 floors away. I know-not great science but the differerences between the two units just didn't impress me. I returned the Generation V unit and eagerly await the Generation VI unit .Be advised-I strongly recommend this product but you may be disappointed in perfomance improvement over its excellent predecessors if they are functioning well.

    Great product. . . but

Once you get this set up to your liking it works wonderfully. However setting it up is quite a task as the instructions in the manual are confusing. Try not to overthink what you're doing. You may have to reset it several times, but don't give up.

Easy to setup, nice design, another good Apple product.

However I can't get over the performance.

My previous record on my iPhone 4 with old Airport Exteme and Comcast was 16.75Mbps...

    Now? 23.33Mpbs!!!! Very nice! =)

    "Strong as a wet noodle"

    • Written by from GHENT

I got an airport extreme and it's extremely weak. Be prepared to send it back, I got great help setting the thing up from Apple, 3 out 4 techs were helpful but it took 3 hours and a number of calls. If I am in the same 18x23 room it's OK but I got better service from my $29.95 router. I use IPhone/IPod/IPad + PC and they all open and run at almost the same speed. What is most disappointing is that just outside the wood frame house, we use a porch, maybe 25 feet from the Airport Extreme and the signal is so weak that the IPhone IPad w/3G goes into 3G. I followed the special instructions ie. moved it away from other electrical equipment, it's 10' away from other stuff and set up with high quality cable, not worth the high cost really.

    Awesome router

    • Written by from Portland

I tried to kill it honestly with 6 laptops 3 gaming systems 3 touches, 2 iphones and 2 hd net security cams all streaming movies and uploading data, and it trucked along like a champ. Really worth the dough just so you know. Oh and I can even get wifi over 250 ft away from the base even with my old crusty work laptop.

    Fantastic

A great wireless router. My Netgear N600 was still working couldn't keep up with all the gadgets in my house. AEBS is easy to install, network set up was a cake, and can easily handle 2 iphones, 2 ipads, 2 laptops, 1 xbox, 1 PS3, and my bluray player.

    Made wireless so fast

    • Written by from Houston

I had a wireless router (modem + wireless) that I got from the cable company. The speed was spotty and occasionally disconnected. I had a Roku like device hooked to the modem and was using wireless for iPad and desktop.

I decided to get a regular modem and add the Airport Extreme. It was SO EASY to install and the wireless is now RELIABLE and FAST. It beats buying from Cisco, Linksys, and the rest, given that the quality of those products is so up-and-down. Apple Airport Extreme was such a no-brainer!

    3rd unit in 3 months

    • Written by from Timmins

I want to have faith and comfort in owning another "great" apple product however my experience with this router has been anything but acceptable. I will now be on my third router in less than 3 months and both units previous have had failed hardware. The good news is that customer support has been great I just wish I could say the same about this product.

    AirPort Extreme!!!

    • Written by from Virginia Beach

Simply awesome, took less than 10 min to set up my wifi network and everthing works great!!
PS3, Xbox 360, 4 Iphones, 1 Ipad, Apple TV and 3 laptops!!! Thank you Apple!!! I was having trouble with my Verizon WiFi and got tired of dealing with their "customer support". So I purchased the AirPort and simply bypassed their network. Love it!!!

    decent product but too expensive

    • Written by from Milwaukee

I bought this because, after upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion, the previous router wasn't supported by the software upgrade. I was a little upset but realizing Apple makes a superior product, I decided to give the Airport Extreme a chance. After some trial-and-error, I got my network running and fingers crossed, knock on wood, so far so good.

I don't give products a 5 star or 10/10 unless it serves my dinner, does the dishes and will fold my laundry so consider my 4 star rating a 5 star in spirit.

Set-up was easy although initially I had a problem because I didn't wait for one dialog window to update. DOH! Applecare took care of that and I am now flying. Life is good again. Yee haw.

    Needs some work...

    • Written by from MUNDELEIN

I read many reviews before purchasing the 5th Gen Airport Extreme base station, after more than a decade of Linksys. If it just worked like it should, I'd have been happy. It's not the speed or the strength of the signal, but the reliability that mattered to me. I just want something that works.
The first months or two it worked really well. I thought I made a smart decision because the Linksys always drops out for no discernible reason, and I was so sick and tired out the power-off and power-on to make it work again. But the AEBS did not last long.
The first time the AEBS dropped out, the light was green. There was no sign of any problem other than that I have no net connection. When I started Airport Utility, it could not find the base station at all.
I find the Airport Utility to be one of the most useless piece of software of all. It never solved any problems when you have one, and it only works when there are no problems at all.
Apple is no better at building routers, only its hardware looks better and costs more.
The first unplug/plug lasted 22 days, the 2nd, 8 days. The last two resets were only 2 days apart.
There are something fundamentally challenging to all the base station makers. I am not sure if it is the heat, accumulation of data or something, they just need to be powered off every once in a while. I am so use to it now that when the AEBS can not be found by Airport Utility, I just power-off and plug it back in. In less than two minutes, everything will go back to normal.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is something you should understand before you buy.
