Great product but not much of an upgrade

    • Written by from Atlanta

I eagerly bought the Generation V Apple Extreme base station as an upgrade from a Generation III unit in order to hopefully extend the range and run Skype better. It is an excellent product but I was disappointed with the performance increase of the Generation V unit compared to the Generation III. Using the online Comcast speed check application, I found that the performance of the Generation III unit was actually slightly better close to the router, although the Generation V unit was superior 2 floors away. I know-not great science but the differerences between the two units just didn't impress me. I returned the Generation V unit and eagerly await the Generation VI unit .Be advised-I strongly recommend this product but you may be disappointed in perfomance improvement over its excellent predecessors if they are functioning well.

    Great product. . . but

    • Written by from Mount Prospect

Once you get this set up to your liking it works wonderfully. However setting it up is quite a task as the instructions in the manual are confusing. Try not to overthink what you're doing. You may have to reset it several times, but don't give up.

    decent product but too expensive

    • Written by from Milwaukee

I bought this because, after upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion, the previous router wasn't supported by the software upgrade. I was a little upset but realizing Apple makes a superior product, I decided to give the Airport Extreme a chance. After some trial-and-error, I got my network running and fingers crossed, knock on wood, so far so good.

I don't give products a 5 star or 10/10 unless it serves my dinner, does the dishes and will fold my laundry so consider my 4 star rating a 5 star in spirit.

    Airport Utility limited?

    • Written by from Yarmouth

In the current version of the Airport you cannot limit the transmitter power. I'm not sure if this feature is removed from a hardware perspective; or just omitted by the newer (dumbed down?) software configuration utility (6.1).

In some of my applications, limiting the power is desired to reduce interference from multiple units. However, I don't seem to be able to do this anymore.

(There appears to be an older version of Airport Utility which can be made to run on Mountain Lion, but it appears to be a bit of work and I am unclear if this would be updated for the newer Airport Extreme base stations)

Doesn't Work Well With LION Server

    • Written by from Sheridan

The quality and effectiveness of this router are excellent. However, for the price I was expecting more flexibility in configuration.

I wanted to use it to set up a wireless guest network alongside my existing wired LION SERVER network. Unfortunately the Airport requires you to have DHCP running if you want to set up a guest network with DHCP, which then would require you to turn off DHCP on your server, since the airport wants to provide DHCP service to both networks.

Additionally, you can't set up a guest network when the router is in bridged mode.

I effectively wasted $180 on an otherwise excellent router, that is useless to me at this point. I sincerely hope they make the guest network functionality independent of other network functionality in the future. If it wouldn't have been for these issues, it would certainly deserve a solid 5 stars.

    pricey, but works as advertised.

setup fairly easy with iMac. definitely did extend the range over the Linksys it replaced. USB port will come in handy. wireless speeds WAY faster than the previous router. reliability? we'll see....

    Better than Linksys!

    • Written by from ELIZABETH

I bought this router because the Linksys E3000 did not reach my expectations, so I went ahead and bought this router. The problems I had with the E3000 went away as soon as I installed this router; however, since I am not an expert in networking I do not know if it's doing it's suppose job. Both, my iPhone 4 and iPad, do get good signal but the antenna icon on both devices are never full. It mostly sticks on to two lines; it does fill up but it does not take much time to get back to two :/. The router is not far from my room; I live in a one level apartment, so I do not know what could be wrong or the router is working fine.. My 2.53GHZ MBP15 is super fast though, so it is mad confusing to understand this router...

    Need more inputs!!! NotExtreme enough!

    • Written by from Laguna Beach

The needs more inputs.... this is not Extreme enough.

These days there are multiple computers, game machines, etc.

Therefore I have to use a switch that greatly degrades the quality.

    Older PowerBook won't connect

    • Written by from MAGGIE VALLEY

My airport extreme works great with our three IMAXs and two iPads, but we also have an older titanium PowerBook that has no problem getting online at any WiFi cafe or hotel, BUT will not connect connect with our AirPort network. What gives?

    Solid wireless device

    • Written by from IXONIA

Although I am a PC user, This device takes the cake in wireless. I don't really use it as a router more of a AP. It would be really nice to have a little more advanced functionality to the device. Not being able to use the guest network when you are bridging brings this product down a star... I think there is room for improvement.

    Easy Set-up

    • Written by from Fort worth

Prior to this I had a D-Link router, but I wanted something with a better range of service and the AirPort appealed to me because not only did it offer a further range of service, but it also offers the capabilities to use an external hard drive with as a sort of "server" in a sense. I could never master the set-up of my old D-Link, but this one was so easy and it works well. I even take advantage of its guest network feature for when I have company over. I recommend this product.
