    Disappointed

    I purchased this unit at the Fort Jackson Exchange in May 2013. Until recently the display worked as it should for a purchase price of $989.00. Within the last 1/2 month or so, the display all of the sudden starts flickering here and there, then the display would also go completely black and back on again. As an experiment, I attached an Samsung PX2330 with an HDMI plugged into a third party adapter and there were no problems what so ever. When attempting to install the recommended firmware, the install would cease as it was already on the unit. I'm running a early rMBP 15' in base configuration (which as replaced under warranty 3/2013). The unit was taken to a nearby Apple store on 8/31/2013. The logic board, power supply and cable was replaced. That was picked up on 9/04/2013 and last night after returning from a business trip, the set up was put back together again and the same symptoms occurred at boot. It's sad for a display that costs this much to have so many problems, look elsewhere. I have another appointment 9/08/2013 with the Genius Bar, only time will tell.

    Thunderbolt Prevents WiFi Use

    I bought the Thunderbolt display directly from the Apple Store to have a large monitor at the cottage where I bring my Macbook Air. Unfortunately, the internet speed through the wifi is reduced to almost zero when the Macbook Air is connected to the Thunderbolt display. Reading comments on the internet (I should have done that before), I see that the problem is known since a long time. Why did the “expert” at the Apple store not warn me about this problem? “Sir, do not buy this product if you intend to use internet with your Macbook”. In fact, why does Apple continue to sell this product without having a big warning sign in the store and on the web site? Why should the client waste time? This shows a complete lack of respect for customers.

    After just 13 months, the display has a strange warped defect in the upper right.

    The audio output from the display's speakers consistently shuts off & I end switching to my Mac Book Pro's speakers.

    The Thunderbolt connectivity really isn't significantly faster than USB or Firewire.

    For those reasons and the cost, this display really isn't worth it. Aesthetically it looks great but in retrospect; I wish I had shopped around for a less expensive solution.

    Dream Setup Denied By Faulty Product

    I always loved the iMac and recently had to convert over to MBP due to my travel schedule. When working out of my office, I wanted that larger screen I had become accustom to and so I went out and bought a 27" Thunderbolt monitor.

    With one connected, it worked great and I had no issues. I then decided to get a second 27" Thunderbolt monitor and that's where the trouble started.

    I am getting constant screen flickering and intermittent use of my USB ports. I went through the process with tech support to no avail. I have flipped them around and switched cables so I know its the daisy chain aspect that is causing the issue.

    It's very disappointing when you buy a premium product and it doesn't work as advertised. Oh well, back to the store to return it.

    3 strikes you're out

    Don't waste your money on the 27 inch Thunderbolt display, buy the 27 inch standard display. Why? The Thunderbolt display doesn't work very long. Display #1 (serial #C02KH3EGF2GC) failed within 24 hours. Problem: display went to sleep and never woke up. Returned to Apple store. Display #2 (serial # C02KH4DJF2GC) worked for 3 weeks and failed! Problem: display went to sleep and only would wake up if you unplugged the thunderbolt cable and plugged it back in. And then you couldn't adjust brightness or have any functioning display ports. Display #3 (serial #C02KF2W5F2GC) is currently working for an hour. If it fails, I am going back to the old standard 27 inch display. I have one working in another room perfectly for 3 years now. I am not the only one this has happened to. Read other posts. At first I thought I was just unlucky and got a lemon. I know better now. Apple has issues with this display.

    AWFUL AWFUL DISPLAY....

    The reason I bought this display was for Photography and Web Design. I wanted a High end display with an IPS Panel.

    The Panel inside the thunderbolt display is Awful. The main problem is its over Excessive Backlight Bleed. not just around the corners but the whole panel itself. This especially in low light conditions makes blacks look light grey and is Impossible to work with. I am now using a £200 Display that is so much better as blacks look black.

    Apple replaced the first panel and the second had the same problem i then went to the apple store and the Display in the store had the same problem but wasn't as noticeable in light conditions. Its not until you get the display home in lower light conditions you notice the issue. Lookup Thunderbolt Display Backlight Bleed on the internet to understand more about this issue...

    This has got to be the worst purchase i have made in many years and has put me off ever buying an Apple product again..

    Horrible - Forced to "ONLY" use new mac

    The targeted display mode was removed in this monitor forcing me to purchase a second desk for my room to run my other devices. Total waste of space that this feature was removed. The display is nice and bright but for the first 7 months of ownership it stayed on the floor unplugged gathering dust. Only this week have I pulled it out to start using it on a cheap fold up table I got from BJs.

    less than 60 days two die

    I too have had a thunderbolt 27″ fail, in fact two of them. The first one was less than 60 days old. Smack dab in the middle it had subpixels fail with a line running vertically and horizontally and everything below the horizontal line was flickering really bad. Made an appointment with the gunnies bar and ended up with an exchange for a band new unit. I felt really good about how well they handled it. However, in less than one week the second monitor from the exchange died! This time no video, however, the display sound, ethernet, and other ports still worked. Again, made an appointment with genius bar. This time they didn’t even remove the monitor form the box to look at it. They just took my word and brought back another brand new monitor. I’m now on my second day on the third monitor and continuously have my fingers crossed. Yes, apple support was excellent and kodos to my local genus bar, but the reality is I’d just would like a monitor that works!

    Worst. Monitor. Ever.

    The Thunderbolt Display looks gorgeous, but don't let the looks deceive you this: this monitor is actually a steaming pile of garbage. I've gone through three in less than a month. The first was shipped with a giant crack in the glass panel. The next two have constantly flickered when plugged into my 13" MacBook Pro, and sometimes shut off completely until I plug them back in. Save yourself some time and money and just buy a cheaper display from another manufacturer.

    I don't know what's going on with Apple, but I've been a Mac user for 20 years, and I've noticed a significant decline in the quality of their hardware over the past five years or so.

    It's so beautiful!

    ...but this product joins the trunk full of apple products I'm accumulating that needed repair barely 1 month out of warranty. In any case, the cable assembly that splits into a TB connector and power supply is defective. A few weeks ago the display went dim. Then the monitor went semi-comatose: Speakers worked but not the screen. So I tried using a separate tb cable to the open port on the back. That brought the screen back to life. So now I have to wait 3 days for an appointment at the local 'genius' bar (sounds so silly to say that, doesn't it?) and then a likely $150 repair bill.

    Blacked Out within 1 Hour with NEW 2013 iMAC

    Plugged in the 27" Thunderbolt Monitor. Got a very Dimm screen, Searched everywhere to find out how to adjust the brightness. BECAUSE THE DISPLAY PREFERENCE DOES NOT APPEAR ON THE THUNDERBOLT DISPLAY!! So i shut down and tried to setup my powerbook with the new display... It NEVER turned back on AGAIN. Will be returning this 1st thing in the morning. May try swapping for the Cinema Display as thats what i thought i was buying to begin with!!! Maybe it will work.. Just Want to Add that Apple Products are NOT as nearly as stable or solid as they once where before selling out to the INTEL chips. My G4 laptop still works without ever crashing in 9 years. However my 2011 iMac completely Died out after 2 years of use and NOW this Thunderbolt box is absolutely USELESS... A huge Disappointment..

    2 of these failed on me

    I've had two of these monitors completely fail on me now. One was a bad LCD panel ($962 to fix) and 6 weeks past the warranty period. Thanks good ness for extended warranties with the credit card company I purchased it with. The second just failed today. A loud pop and the screen is dead. Not the computer as I have another monitor and tested the computer.

    Apple's quality control has gone down so much over the last year or so. Sure it si great while it works, but 2 monitors in 2 years is a pretty lousy track record.

    Avoid it!

    Do not purchase

    This display looks nice and when it works, it is good. Problem is that it doesn't work very well. Constantly flashes and turns off requiring it to be unplugged from the MacBook and plugged back in. USB ports do not have enough power for much of anything and the Ethernet adapter on mine does not work. Wish I could return...
    Out of all the Apple products I own, or have owned, this is the only one I am completely disappointed by.

    Why oh why does this not match the current iMac

    Really apple.. How can you expect us pros to buy something that has a completely different reflectivity to the current iMac screen.. It beggars belief frankly. I am saddened that apple seems to be leaving it's pro customers behind - still no Pro refresh! And now, when I was on the point of buying a new top of the line iMac fully specced, there is no pro screen with the same specs!!! What IS going on here!

    Awful Connectivity with USB and AWFUL Audio.

    I've had this display since September. I wanted to wait to write my review so I had some "time" with this display.

    I bought this display to go with my Mid 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro for work purposes. I do a lot of freelance post-processing work for photo studios, and I needed something that would amplify the graphics from the laptop, had lots of USB ports, could potentially use it as a dual display with my laptop, etc. Sounded great in theory.

    It couldn't be more of a pain. I originally had the audio problems and USB power connectivity issues with my wacom tablet, keyboard, and mouse, etc. and spent hours on the phone with apple support who were great, nice, polite, etc. But their only fix was for installing updates, and that doesn't really FIX the problem unless you unplug EVERYTHING, turn the computer off, plug everything back in and turn it on in safe mode or something to allow the power to re-circulate or something. Basically the apple support member admitted there was an issue or faultiness with how the power in the Thunderbolt circulates, hence why it cannot power USB devices properly and shorts out on audio.

    The fix only worked for a short while. I eventually gave up. My time isn't just MY time, it's my clients time, and I DO NOT HAVE TIME to do EVERY TIME this happens!! It fixes the problem for like, an hour. I eventually figured a way around it by just not plugging ANYTHING into the TB's USB ports, and plugging them all into my MBPro, what I had room for anyways. Well, now that hardly works EITHER. I am fed up that it is now January of 2013, and they STILL have not offered a fix for this.

    In short, for a professional, do not WASTE your $1000, put it to an EIZO monitor or something.

    Heartbroken

    I've dreamed of owning my own Mac desktop for years, and finally received a brand new mac mini with Thunderbolt display for christmas. I've only been using it for four days and already my TBD has flickered to the point of being unusable at times, hasn't woken up from sleep mode, and twice has just turned itself off. When it is working it is a gorgeous display, but I am heartbroken that my first brand new mac is flawed in such a major way (the mini, btw, works wonderfully). I already downloaded the update to "fix" the flickering, but it did nothing. I will be calling Apple to see what they say, I will see if I can return it and get an iMac instead. I really don't want to exchange it for another TBD, since it sounds like an extremely common issue. Wish I had seen these reviews before. $2000 is a heck of a lot of money for something that doesn't work correctly.

    TBD Random Crashes / MBP Retina

    If you intend to use this as designed, with a brand new mb pro retina with 16gb of ram. You will indeed have issues. That seems to be the pattern on the Internet of people with this display and issues.

    It could also be an osx 10.8.2 thing.

    Either way. Right now this display will blackout at least once every 2-3 hours.

    11 years of owning and running macs for work, first unsolvable issue I've ran into with the hardware.

    Screen flickers, have to unplug constantly

    I don't know if I have a defective unit or what, but my display flickers constantly to the point where it is unusable, I have to unplug it and power back up and hope that the TBD is in a good mood. If I get lucky and it doesn't flicker, the thing works beautifully. It has great picture and sound, it looks nice, and it has powered usb ports for all my iOS devices. I am going to try and return it after 6 months, hope they can resolve my issue.

    There are only three resolution setting. The text is either too small at the highest resolution setting, or fuzzy at the second highest resolution!
