Great, especially when it's not sunny

This is the best screen I've had. It's expensive for what it is though, the sound is poor and you'll hear some soft noise when the speakers are activated. The USB hub and ethernet port are fantastic and work great.

One thing I can't understand: there has been no effort whatsoever to make this screen less glossy. This means you'll have a hard time using it when it's sunny. So this screen is perfect if you like working with the curtains closed, but if you like to work in a sunny office you'll probably want a different screen.

You can set it to full brightness to see everything, but your eyes will get tired because of the reflection and the bright light. I never had headaches when using the computer, but it started after I bought this screen. I guess Apple doesn't mind. There have been petitions and a lot of requests for offering a matte version, but no action whatsoever.

I'd think it's worth 600 -700 euros, but not 1000 because of the flaws. I'll replace it as soon as I can get a Thunderbolt screen that's matte.

It has perfect viewing angles and that makes it perfect to show things to clients (again, when it's not sunny).

    Heartbroken

I've dreamed of owning my own Mac desktop for years, and finally received a brand new mac mini with Thunderbolt display for christmas. I've only been using it for four days and already my TBD has flickered to the point of being unusable at times, hasn't woken up from sleep mode, and twice has just turned itself off. When it is working it is a gorgeous display, but I am heartbroken that my first brand new mac is flawed in such a major way (the mini, btw, works wonderfully). I already downloaded the update to "fix" the flickering, but it did nothing. I will be calling Apple to see what they say, I will see if I can return it and get an iMac instead. I really don't want to exchange it for another TBD, since it sounds like an extremely common issue. Wish I had seen these reviews before. $2000 is a heck of a lot of money for something that doesn't work correctly.

    I LOVE my Thunderbolt Display

After having my TBD for about 8 months now, I still absolutely LOVE my display. I have my TBD connected to my late 2011 MBP and they work great together. I was just reading over all the other reviews and was quite surprised to see so many complaints and problems with their TBD's. I actually bought my TBD refurbished (great money saver) and didn't notice any scratches or anything, great condition. I love the resolution on this display, watching movies and tv shows from itunes is amazing.

Very impressed with the quality of the screen. HD editing and playback are both excellent. Monitor really shines when playing games as well.

    Worst. Monitor. Ever.

The Thunderbolt Display looks gorgeous, but don't let the looks deceive you this: this monitor is actually a steaming pile of garbage. I've gone through three in less than a month. The first was shipped with a giant crack in the glass panel. The next two have constantly flickered when plugged into my 13" MacBook Pro, and sometimes shut off completely until I plug them back in. Save yourself some time and money and just buy a cheaper display from another manufacturer.

I don't know what's going on with Apple, but I've been a Mac user for 20 years, and I've noticed a significant decline in the quality of their hardware over the past five years or so.

I currently own a Macbook Air 11" and it's great to know that with one simple cable I can make it my office computer with a large screen for multiple windows. I like all apple products but for me this is a must have accessory.

I am very pleased with my purchase of the Apple Thunderbolt Display.
I'm a very big fan of its 27-inch size and really like the docking possibilities.
The extra ethernet port, usb ports, firewire port and thunderbolt port are very useful and I use them al the time.

I've read some of the more negative reviews of this product and felt I had to chime in. I use this monitor with my 17" MBP, often with the laptop in clamshell; I have had no problems recovering from sleep mode with all my devices waking with the laptop. I have a FW800 drive plugged in all the time for data syncs, and often have at least one USB2 drive plugged in as well. Everything wakes up when the laptop does.

I have to agree with the complaints about Lion's full screen multiple monitor support. Going full screen on one monitor while still seeing anything on the second is just not possible. It would be a nice tweak if Apple added this mode's support.

Just purchased a second TBD. The look on the salesman's face when I said "I want a Thunderbolt Display" was pretty funny. Transaction took about 12 minutes. He said it was the easiest sale he has had in a while.
Take it out of the box, plug it in, hook up the MBA and it just works. I generally use it for photography work. Resolution is astounding. I just became a better photographer.

I felt kind of guilty spending so much on this monitor, but now that I've had it a week or so I'm so glad I did! Just an amazing monitor. I never want to leave my desk now!

less than 60 days two die

I too have had a thunderbolt 27″ fail, in fact two of them. The first one was less than 60 days old. Smack dab in the middle it had subpixels fail with a line running vertically and horizontally and everything below the horizontal line was flickering really bad. Made an appointment with the gunnies bar and ended up with an exchange for a band new unit. I felt really good about how well they handled it. However, in less than one week the second monitor from the exchange died! This time no video, however, the display sound, ethernet, and other ports still worked. Again, made an appointment with genius bar. This time they didn’t even remove the monitor form the box to look at it. They just took my word and brought back another brand new monitor. I’m now on my second day on the third monitor and continuously have my fingers crossed. Yes, apple support was excellent and kodos to my local genus bar, but the reality is I’d just would like a monitor that works!

...but this product joins the trunk full of apple products I'm accumulating that needed repair barely 1 month out of warranty. In any case, the cable assembly that splits into a TB connector and power supply is defective. A few weeks ago the display went dim. Then the monitor went semi-comatose: Speakers worked but not the screen. So I tried using a separate tb cable to the open port on the back. That brought the screen back to life. So now I have to wait 3 days for an appointment at the local 'genius' bar (sounds so silly to say that, doesn't it?) and then a likely $150 repair bill.

    Should I be worried?

Just took delivery of my new display, purchased from a store here in New Zealand. Perhaps a minor issue, but my son bought one a couple of months back (different store, same city) and the picture within the display featured on the box is quite different - both "Milky Way" images but one is markedly different from the other.

That apart, one annoyance is that, using it as I do with my MacBook Pro, any time the monitor goes into sleep mode I have to unplug the monitor from the MB and re-connect. I use bluetooth keyboard and mouse and neither is able to shake the display from its slumber. Any way to overcome this?

Great screen that will drive you crazy

    • Written by from Palo Alto

It's a beautiful screen to look at. High resolution, high contrast, good built-in audio and ports (no USB3 though), thunderbolt connection to macs so it just works, no headaches here.

You will get headaches from the mirror finish. It's effectively unusable in anything but a dark room. It's possible to force brightness way up to drown out the reflections, but this is akin to staring directly into a bright light - seriously not good for you.

It's a gorgeous looking device, but it's going back to Apple store tomorrow. Not willing to gamble with my eyesight.

Colors are vibrant and love the screen size. The display speakers have limited bass, almost not there. Will keep my external speakers. Easy hookup. Overpriced.

Works great with 2 monitors and laptop display

I hooked up two of these to my 2011 MacBook pro 15" i7 and WOW - they look great and both run in full resolution while still letting my laptop display function as a third monitor. Having read some forums online before purchasing I did not expect the laptop display to still function - and was very pleasantly surprised when it did. They are crystal clear, and really work well at a slight angle the way I prefer them (no perceptible color or brightness shift).

I wish they had additional inputs (e.g. HDMI and/or DVI) and a power switch - but other than that they are working out great!

If you have a new macbook air and don't do a lot of heavy graphics, this combination is incredible. Finally I have a laptop not much bigger than an iPad that's blows away my old desktop, without sacrificing anything. Yes it's a little pricy, but it's 1440p and an unbeatable combination. I just wish it had a headphone jack...

Like the previous 27" Cinema Display (non-Thunderbolt version), the image quality is superb. Especially in terms of expressing color, this blows Dell or Samsung monitors we have by great margin.

As for the Thunderbolt connectivity, I haven't had any problem yet when connecting it to a MacBook Pro. It takes a little longer than optimal to turn on when connecting to a running laptop though.

Another drawback is that it works only with a few recent models of Macs, so please check if yours is compatible before buying.
