    Truly stunning

I just bought this today and I am in love! I bought it to use with my mac mini and MacBook Air! The display is simply gorgeous. I keep in a shady part of my room so the glare does not effect me! When i use to with the mini i get an amazing full-on desktop! I started using aperture and Xcode on it and it is truly stunning! When I use with my Air i love it as a second screen. It has been working! Despite the reviews I would highly recommend it!

from a web designer's perspective, 5 stars. Clear, crisp and beautiful

    • Written by from Los Angeles

I look at images and text all day. I need there to be clarity looking at code and the TBD is beautiful. Lacking nothing, I find it perfect for my needs. Images are crisp, text is perfect. I have not found the problems others are talking about.

i finally pulled the trigger on buying a 27" thunderbolt display, and it was a great decision. i must admit that i was hesitant at first, mostly because of all the terrible reviews. I saw how great they look at the stores and i must say it might even be better. For anyone who is hung up on purchasing one because of the reviews, just buy one there awesome.

    Fantastic!

I feel I have to write this review and encourage people to consider getting this monitor. Yesterday I almost went a different way after reading all of the negative review. They were even recent reviews. After seeing it work just fine at the Apple Store I was still skeptical. It makes me wonder about the intention of the negative reviewers. The only one I agree with is the light bleed around the edges but come on - it needs to be in a dark room with a black screen. It works great. MBPro on, off, sleeping, awake, when I plug it in it always triggers the screen to start up. It's BEAUTIFUL!. I can just disconnect with all of the screens in full screen on the display and what happens????? They are magically all in full screen on my MBPro. The dock is not always on the display when my MBPro is open but big deal, it's on the MBPro. Don't hesitate. Buy it if you need an external monitor. It was made to work seamlessly with your Mac product.

I've just receive my Apple Thunderbolt Display (27-inch). Plugged it in, turned it on, and voilà -- perfect in every sense of the word. Exactly what I've expected from Apple. I read some of those bad reviews, and I totally disagree with any of them. Either the previous OS were not ready for this display (I've OS 10.9.3), or some people just need to vent ...

    Work big!

There is nothing like a fine interface to the day in and day out job. I cannot tell you how different that day is when I am able to plug into my Thunderbolt Display. Soon as my funds build I will have a second. Then as they build again I will have a third at work and then a fourth. My world will be dual Thunderbolts everywhere I hang my hat. Why? Because I need to feel the way I feel when I work behind them to maximize my creativity, my productivity and my sanity so that I can spare some for the mix of life that I enjoy having.

Thank you Apple for being a company that thanks about work behind a computer not just a business environment involving a contract process. Thank you because I create and produce and stress to imagine not just push seconds and pennies. I push smiles, and sometimes I have to sit idle and think over a coffee as pandora spills a pretty image across these pretty displays.

Should have purchased 6 months ago

I have a Late-2013 Macbook Pro Retina, purchased in 11/2013. This was my first mac after being a dedicated PC builder and user. iOS was my gateway drug into the mac world. I had purchased my macbook pro as a desktop replacement. Although I had planned to use existing monitors as 'dock" on my desktop, the image quality was striking in moving between the native retina display and my older twin 22" LCDs.

After much deliberation and hesitation (mainly because of the cost $$$) I finally purchased the Thunderbolt display last weekend. I wish I would have done it right away. It does everything I had hoped and more. I have never had a more beautiful monitor. It turns my powerful laptop into a powerful desktop.

If you have a Macbook as a primary device and find yourself wanting more screen real estate, you will NOT regret this purchase. It will make you more productive. You won't want to leave your desk. It's just that beautiful. The sound is also IMPRESSIVE.

If I seem like I'm gushing, I'm gushing. This is really that good of a buy.

Also, do not underestimate the utility of the built-in ports.

    Fantastic

This monitor is fantastic. I use it with my mid-2012 non-retina Macbook Pro 15". Because I purchased the pre-retina model this gives me 27" of high definition quality. The only time I unplug the display is to travel. I play one game in windows and use bootcamp. When I want to boot into windows, I simply go to System Preferences, then Start Up Disc, select Bootcamp, then restart into windows. To go back to OSX without unplugging the display, I just go to the right corner, select boot into OSX, then i'm back in OSX. When I'm done with using the computer, I just select sleep. The only time you need to unhook is if you turn off the machine, or to travel.
The other advantage is I get to store the power supply and cord that came with my laptop in my bag for when I travel. If you plan to buy a non-retina, and want a high resolution screen that doubles as a docking station, this is a great choice. If you want a Mac Pro desktop, this is a great choice. If you want a second display on your iMac, this is a great choice, if you want a much larger display for your Retina Macbook Pro, again this is a great choice.
I am glad I purchased the Thunderbolt display.

    Great Monitor

    • Written by from White Lake

I've purchased this monitor for my 2013 Mac Pro 6-core after almost 4 years of extreme satisfaction with a Mid-2010 iMac 21.5". I considered other brands of 2560x1440 monitors but being able to SEE one out in the wild (brick & mortar) seems to be impossible these days, i.e. online only! The other brands' monitors in stores were just lousy even for standard monitors. The leading online retailer is great at handling returns IF it came from THEM but I just wasn't up for the gamble considering how picky I am, so being able to see THIS one in the Apple Store helped seal it for me.

Having the 3 USB ports behind the screen same as on the iMac is definitely a plus, even if 2.0 they can be used for charging iPhones, etc. although the TB port may be better utilized as USB 3.0 with 6 TB on the MP. The speakers sound better than most LCD/LED HD TVs.. not tinny if using the iTunes equalizer, and no vibration. The bottom edge of the monitor sits about 1" higher than the iMac screen when resting on the 12 South Hi-Rise but the foot sticks out about .25" further than the iMac. Sure the TBD reflects a decent amount but maybe the photog "professionals" should try working in the DARK like we used to in the days of FILM! Working with a single CFL light placed behind the monitor I see little reflection on my beautifully crisp Thunderbolt Display. Another great Apple product, hope Apple comes out with a 4K monitor!

    Absolutely Stunning!

I had my new MacBook Pro 15 inch for a week and for the office I decided to improve my productivity with adding this absolutely incredible Apple Thunderbolt Display. It is fantastic in all ways; resolution, color crispness, integration with my MacBook Pro, iOSX, quality of controls (there isn't any), packaging, the Apple store experience, everything. Just plug in the power cord, another cord to the laptop and voila! It works superbly.

After working with Microsoft Windows and related software and hardware since Windows 2.11, I just realized that I was a self punisher for my entire career. I will never take my fingers off this awesome Apple product and I am an even bigger devoted fan.

    No Problems

I run a Retina MacBook Pro (15") and this display. I swing and day trade and need to add another screen. Lucky for me, the Pro will run 2 of these displays with ease. The screen is great! Yes, it's reflective... But hasn't been an issue. I have been running this setup for about 10 months. Editing music, video and photographs. I start with uncompressed video and audio files and this set up performs beyond expectations. For day trading? No problem - I just need three screens to be efficient. I will be either ordering it online or at my local Apple Store. It's always great to take in some local color and meet creative and technical people in store.

    Thunderbolt Display Awesome

I couldn't be any happier. I have a 15" Retina Macbook Pro with the highest specs. Pairing it with the display is just works seamlessly. The laptop charges while connected to the display and the sound is fairly good too compared to the laptop speakers. It's the best $1K I've spent in a long time.

I just bought this to support a great desktop experience paired with my MacBook Pro 15" Retina. It's a perfect product; trivial to set up, great performance, and stunning clarity. Microphone, camera, speakers are all hidden but high-quality.

Not to be missed. I bought this instead of a buying a Mac Mini to pair with my old PC screen as a desktop replacement. The combination of the MacBook Pro and the Thunderbolt Display is significantly better than a Mini + Display.

    Outstanding Monitor

    • Written by from Pacifica

I refrained from writing a review on this monitor until I used it for more than a year so I could provide true and useful data.

    Likes:
Appearance: Like all Apple products, esthetics and appearance are high on the list of importance. The brushed aluminum provides a clean design and the connectors being hidden on rear move the unsightly cables from view.

Performance: The sharpness of the monitor is unmatched and provides crisp video, graphics and type. the sharpness provides the ability to open numerous applications side by side in smaller panels with no distortion or fuzzy edges like some many other monitors have when resizing panels to be less than full screen.

Expansion: The additional USB, firewire, ethernet and thunderbolt ports provide the ultimate docking station for my MacBook Pro. The ability to leave your keyboard, time machine backup and ethernet cable connected provides a simple and clean use case.

Sound: The built-in speakers and amplifier provide superior sound and allowed me to clean extraneous equipment from my desk.

HD Video Camera: The built-in camera provides outstanding video for conferencing and the convenience of not having to install an HD camera on my desk.

    Sort of Dislike:
No power button: However, if I put this on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being most important, no power button is 1. Simply putting my MacBook to sleep shuts the monitor down. So I'm not even sure if you could count this as an issue but I needed to write something.

I have since added two more Thunderbolt monitors, one for my office and one for astronomy workstation and all provide outstanding performance.

ps: I have been an Apple/Mac user since 1983.

I can only speak to the performance of the setup I'm working with, but I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8 hooked up to this display and I have no complaints. The extra screen space this display offers is priceless and everything looks fantastic with no noticeable dips in performance running games or video on the display.

This display will only be nicer when Mavericks comes out and I can use OS X's full-screen windows on the display and my MacBook Pro. Also, USB 3.0 would be nice, but I got wall outlets and power adapters in the meanwhile. ;-)
