    Warning for 27" iMac users

    • Written by from leeds

I've been looking for a solution to use my 27" i5 iMac as an extended desktop for my MBP and went into my local Apple store. My iMac is late 2009 so the first i5 quad core machine which only has mini display port. After speaking with 3 or 4 technicians in the store I was told as Thunderbolt is essentially the same connection it would work. Unfortunately they were all wrong, looks like I'll have to find another solution. I would have thought there would be a simple cable to allow me to do this! Nobody seems to know how best to do this with the machines I have but I'm told all 27" iMac's support this feature!! I'm sure the cable is great, just make sure your iMac has a thunderbolt port:-) I've given it 3 stars as it would be unfair to give it 1 due to poor advice from Apple.

    Excellent

High quality as expected. Allows me to use my 27" iMac as an extended 2nd display for my MacBook Pro simply by selecting CMD + F2. In this "Target Display Mode", my iMac keeps everything running in the background so I can always go back to using my iMac any time. If I want to play audio or video from my MacBook Pro on the iMac, I simply choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sound, and then click Output - then select my iMac from the list of devices.

    Incredible!

Does what it it supposed to, (unless it fries itself)

I've purchased 10 of these cables for my video production company, and while they seem to be well built and have the fit and finish I have come to expect from Apple, 2 of the 10 have stopped working. Both failures caused, (or were caused by) kernel panics on 2 different computers. Since they are the only game in town, you should definitely still buy them if you need them. just make sure, (however painful it is at $50 a pop) to pick up a spare or two if you're using them for mission-critical applications.

Expensive, but gets the job done

I was previously backing up to an external Firewire 800 drive, which I'd share between a 2011 laptop and 2011 desktop Mac. What I liked about the drive was the single cable solution, which makes it VERY handy if a power plug isn't always available. A portable drive should, after all, be as portable and as versatile as your laptop.

The trouble I had with the Firewire 800 is that it, like USB 2, is still too slow for moving around large quantities of data. I researched my options in Thunderbolt, which is almost non-existant. Half a dozen manufacturers have either claimed or shown a working Thunderbolt drive, but no one other then LaCie or Pegasus are shipping. So I decided to research LaCie's Little Big Disk to see what it had to offer. Unfortunately, they charge a huge premium to take their stock LBD and add Thunderbolt -- and I don't feel like paying them to be their first-run guinea-pig. Further, the LBD is not bus powered over Thunderbolt. At over 500 dollars, I found that limitation to be unacceptable.

Eventually I realized I already have a device that's portable, and I can just plug in the Thunderbolt cable -- the 2011 Macbook Pro. So what I did was rip out the stock hard drive, and put a fast 7200 Hitachi drive in. Now, with the single Thunderbolt cable, i'm able to back up a large amount of files between the computers in 30 min, that would normally take 2 hours with the Firewire 800 drive. Essentially, the Thunderbolt cable is giving you an eSata (or better) connection, without the need for a separate power cable.

    Beefs

    - Current need to put one of your Macs into Target Disk Mode for sharing
    - The outrageous price of the cable hinders the adoption of the new tech

    Great Product

The thunderbolt cable is simply jet AWESOME. First off, it's pretty long (I was a bit skeptical about the length til I unraveled it) Its blazing fast, and the chips inside each side of he chips do what they are supposed to do. Be aware that it does not work with the MacBook Pro's that have the mini-display port. Yeah its BS that the cable is $50. But check out ifixits page on the thunderbolt cable. There is no other current TB cable out at the moment and for the length that it is (and the fact that it has chips inside) its definitely worth the $50. Keep in mind that HDMI cables run around this cost and they don't even have chips in them.

    Best cable ever?

    • Written by from Miami

Look, the sticker shock is there... $50 for a cable? Well, it doesn't get faster than Thunderbolt. One little cable is letting me get close to 800 MB/sec read and writes off my Pegasus R6 disk array. And this cable has a lot to do with that. According to the Thunderbolt device tree in System Information (formerly System Profiler), the cable has firmware! There's real chips in this thing that do some important work to get all that stuff flowing fast. I'd pay the list price for this time after time after time... it's 200% worth it!

    Cool and fast

I bought the Thunderbolt to use with a Macbook Air and iMac - the iMac is a display for the Air. The cable works well - but the Apple Store where I bought it didn't tell me how to make the iMac work properly. One call to tech support - CMD + F2, System Preferences, Display - Mirror Display; cool!

    Very good!

    • Written by from Morristown

Thunderbolt is fantastic and EXTREMELY fast! It is worth the fifty bucks. They have to put chips inside the cable (that's why the two plastic ends are long) and the cable is a great length, so the price is justified. The only thing I would request is a cheaper price if you buy more than one cable. You can daisy chain up to six Thunderbolt devices, so I have to spend $300 for six cables? Now THAT's kind of expensive...

    Worth the Money

I was a little hesitant to spend the $50 at first, but once I actually used it, it was so worth it! I am truly amazed at how fast it is. The Apple Thunderbolt cable is a must have!
