My second one just died. And of course my AppleCare plan expired 6 weeks ago

On my 3rd charger in 5 years. They break way too easily. Flimsy design and workmanship from Apple!

After shelling out 2000+ for a computer, you would expect the 80.00 power adapter to last more than a year, especially when you care for it as if it is made of glass. For years I have known these things to be fragile and so I keep it in one place where it can't get pulled on and it still frays apart forcing me to spend more money on a new one.

Word to the wise: when it gets frayed and the wire is exposed, don't use it!!! My co-worker had his computer go up in smoke in our laboratory, almost burned the place down. Luckily the cord is long and could safely be unplugged, while a labcoat was thrown on top before it actually caught fire. In the end, computer was a little charred and the company decided to replace rather than risk another incident. We were the only lab with mac at our institute and now they are going to refuse to buy mac laptops, that's what apple gets for selling garbage for gold.

Sadly, I see this is not the only account of fire hazard cords. You would think that at this price, apple would be more careful, but I guess they are waiting for someone to die and get sued... Will be an easy settlement with all this documentation on the internet already.

My AC adapter died only 5 months after I purchased my MBP. My husband is an electrian and determined that there was no power coming from the power adapter. Just so happens that I have a final paper due for a graduate class and now there is nothing I can do since power cord is dead and MBP won't turn on do I can work on my paper, which my professor doesn't excusel

On two of these I have had the white cord starting to peal off. One was exchanged under warranty, I am stuck with the other. A third one just died on me after 4 years. Come on Apple, get your act together !

Bought my 15 inch mac book pro about 2 years ago. July 2010 to be exact. About a month ago I noticed the rubber molding on the cable had split open revealing the cable within. I promptly taped it up and it continues to work a charm. I am quite careful with my products but am a pretty heavy user so it may be a bit inevitable. I lug the thing around the house all the time as well. I use it every day for around 4-5 hours, sometimes more. I hook it up to my LCD tv and/or computer screen for gaming and watching movies, for music, youtube videos, etc. so it definitely is a bit worn the poor thing. However, given how thin the magnetic end of the cable is it's lasted well this far. The massive adapter bit in the middle had a meltdown earlier today. It got overheated and started to smell and shut down. I left it alone for about 40 minutes and came back, it had cooled down and was working perfect again! It may stop working soon but I pray that is not the case. I don't mind replacing it for $80 if it does. My macbook pro serves me well and I have no complaints!

I can't believe after 1 year my cord is not working and my battery needs replacing. I'm not sure what the deal is with this, but I think Apple needs to reconsider durability considering the initial upfront cost

When it works, it works like it's designed. I kept good care of mine, had it for 18 months, not even signs of wear and tear. One morning my MBP wouldn't charged and I noticed the cord looked nearly severed near the adapter and had scorch marks. Lucky a fire didn't start. Apple Genius agreed that definitely wasn't normal, and the product definitely failed, then quickly suggested I buy a new one for $80. Wish there was a cheaper way to replace a cord, than buy a whole new adapter.

The Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter is the most incredible product that I have ever observed. I honestly think that I am going directly to the Apple franchise to purchase this outstanding material.

I've been around technology my entire life and ALWAYS handle my computers and accessories with the utmost care, however the charger that came with my mac fizzled out recently after about 18 months of use. There is no external fraying on the chord, and it still appears on the outside to be in mint condition.

It really is frustrating when things break doing the job that they're made to perform.
