    Fragile Ingenuity

The magnetic, reversible connection is great, but this will be the third one I've purchased because the other two died unexpectedly.

    comparison

My old noname laptop PC now is 7 years old, sent to retirement on countryside house, where it is good enough for browsing and emails. All those 6 years of hell-like work on table, in metro, in office, in caffee, on my knees its proud noname charger is still flawlessly working. The price was around 600$ (noname PC + noname charger). Mac is better, I have heard. Mac is the most and only reliable. Well, I like my MBP. The other story is with charger brick - that is junk. And price? 1800$.. Plus every year 80$ for a sh... brick proudly called "charger"… Well.. I can buy three noname PC's with their chargers, that would not ….. me off…

    They don't last

So far I have had to buy 4 mac chargers, an average of one per year. I enjoy the design of the charger, always have, but considering that these chargers are so expensive and break so quickly, there is no way to give this product more than 1 star.
It isn't only cable fraying (though that did happen to my first two chargers), the last two simply decided to break and not charge anymore.
If there were a good alternative, I would buy a different brand of charger.

    Apple please,

Would you first send your engineers to rehab before letting them design a piece of crab like this again?

My adapter chrod broke on 2 sides. There goes 80 dollar/euro.

    P.S. my mbp gets 5/5

    Snapped cord

    • Written by from Pittsburgh

After peeling back the rubber exterior, the thin wires inside that make up the cord had all snapped clean through. This happened right at the junction between the adapter and cord where the half inch of hard rubber tries to protect the cord, but fails. Perhaps they should consider changing up the design, seeing as how this product only has 1.5/5 stars. ..

Cord cover frayed after only 11 months

    • Written by from Austin

Cord cover frayed after only 11 months. The fraying took place around 12" away from the MagSafe connector. This is not an area that has been stressed in my use of the power adapter. It appears that the plastic sheathing just dried out, puckered and then developed numerous splits. This all happened rather suddenly over the last week or so.

    Broken wire

    • Written by from Sudbury

The very first review I read was exactly my problem, I had to wiggle the cord where it connects to the transformer to get power. Now it has stopped working completely.
My problem is that I am in a remote part of Peru trying to get someone to buy me a new one in Lima and ship it to me.
Luckily a coworker also has a Mac and he has been gracious enough to lend me his charger or otherwise my work would cease.
Hopefully when I get back Apple will warranty this one under Apple Care. At least I will have a backup for when the next one breaks as it is obviously going to do.

This doesn't even deserve one star

Cord frayed near the brick and started sparking. There's obvious burn marks at the site where the cord connects to the brick. Can we say fire hazard?! I have an appointment tomorrow. If this isn't replaced for me I will be highly disappointed. APPLE please take note of the faults of this design and the dissatisfaction of loyal customers! This really isn't acceptable. At the price I pay for my apple products, I expect quality all around. Not cool. Not cool at all.

    cheap plastic that overheats.
and provides insufficient power to keep up with the consumption of the 2011 MBP 17".
your battery still drains when plugged in to charge.
these adapters need a major overhaul, which is now long overdue!

    Doesn't last

The charger works great-at first. However, I am now on my third power cord because the first one frayed and stopped working, the second one just stopped charging, and now I have had to order a third cord! And they aren't cheap! This is getting ridiculous. I also live in a town where they don't have these cords, so I always have to place an online order and spend time without my computer. This is very inconvenient.

    Too delicate for heavy use?

    • Written by from New York

I have an early black MacBook, and the original charger is in perfect shape. My daughter's charger for her new MacBook started to fray after about 6 months, with the white insulation pulling away from the wires at both ends. The difference seems to be in how you use the chargers: mine usually gets used at night, when the MacBook is just sitting on a countertop, while she generally runs hers with the charger in all the time, sitting in bed, at her desk, in a chair - you know, "student style." :-)

I wind my cord fairly tightly when I put the charger away, and that's done no harm over the years. The problem seems to come from tugging on the cords so that the mechanically weak insulation is stretched, while the strong interior cabling takes none of the stress. I can only suggest what might be counter-intuitive: get a really tight grip on the cord before you pull on it, so you're pulling on the interior cable, not just the white insulation. And try to avoid working with the cord fully stretched out.

magsafe power adapter for 15 AND 17 INCH MACBOOK PRO

This is the second one that I have purchased and the same thing happens after the warranty goes off. if they have one. the small part with the outlet prongs keeps coming unconnected with larger part. And to pay what apple charges for their laptops they should have accessories that at least last! another 80.00 + shipping if I want to keep using it what a rip-off.

    Chargers are problematic

I have had my MacBook Pro four years now and am on my third charger. The factory supplied charger and the second charger both had broken wires. The Genius Bar told me that it was because I was wrapping the cord too tight. I always used the ears on the charger to wrap the cord, nothing abnormal. This design flaw has cost me $160 thus far. I love my Mac but something needs to be done with the chargers.

    Lasted for one year

After 1 year and couple months of using the power adaptor (L-connector for MacBook Pro early 2012) the cord melted and wires inside it were broken. Well... I was disappointed and expected better quality from Apple. I brought it to Genius bar in Apple Store and they replaced it for free. They have a special program for that.

    Awful Charger

10 of 11 people found this useful

Mac chargers are very expensive and break so easily! The wires feeding into the computer clip are ultra prone to getting damaged. I have replaced my cord several times with several models and no matter how careful I am, it's life span is woefully disappointing. For the price, it should be far better. At the very least you should be able to replace only the section prone to damage and not the whole cord!

I had a power cord from a 2004 mac book pro that still works. The current one to go with a 17 inch mac book pro has already frayed and burned with the same type of usage as the last older laptop.

    Overheats and melts the cord

    • Written by

I've gone through at least 4 cords all because the adapter overheats (to the point where it almost burns your flesh) and melts the cord and then eventually the wires become frayed. Luckily every time I go into my genius bar they have never charged me for a new cord. I certainly would not spend $79 on this cord if they continue to have this problem. I love Mac in every other sense of the word except for their chargers

I'm worried I'll catch on fire!

I love my MacBook Pro! And am a long time Mac user. Yay! My only issue is their power cords. Whether it's this latest model or the one before each one frays near where it connects to the laptop. One time it started flaming. That was scary. I like John's idea that Apple should make and cell new cables that go from the laptop to the power square. I would buy a bunch of those. I don't need new AC cables. Those last forever. But I am really bummed having to spend $79 on new power cords.

Would be nice for Apple to work on getting these things dialed in. Particularly as, it is the only way to charge a laptop. I'm about to purchase our 5th one - the connection where the wire meets the adapter just doesn't last - at all. Come on Apple - we expect better from you on this kind of thing.
