Apple should be ashamed of itself

    • Written by from Littleton

Seeing 900 or more reviews of 2 stars or less, Apple should be ashamed. Perhaps another "maps apology" is in order -- and new chargers. I'm less than a year from replacing my first power charger due to fraying, and I just noticed it's started again. I am careful with how I use it, practically babying it. I'm so not impressed, Apple. At least lower the price to about US$ 20 from the current $79.

    Decent charger

My only concern in the charger cord where it meets the connector that links to the computer is turning green. I'm not sure if that means I should get a new one or not. Besides that it's been working fine for many years.

    The Rumors are True

The rumors of the adapter breaking are true. Although, in some cases, it takes longer than others. Mine lasted me 4.5 years, and now it's on it's last leg. I agree that you should be able to buy the cord separately, but in the meantime, you can always buy a cheaper off-brand model from a different website. However, I just did that, and the cheap-o model lasted roughly 4 days.

Apple power cords are worst ever

    • Written by from Cranston

I used pc laptops for 13 years and never had a problem with power cords. They were always going strong when I replaced the computer. I switched to mac, and the power cords are basically disposable. My wife and I take good care of them, but something inside them breaks the connection. Apple replaced one, but for the rest they said the warranty did not cover them. My understanding is that they only did that because of a class action lawsuit. I would understand one bad cord or if just one of us had a problem, but they ALL stop working. What's apple's problem with this product!

To all the people who call us whiners, you don't know what you are talking about. I've had my macbook pro for 2.5 years, and I've gone through 6-7 adapters, I've begun to lose count. I'm never harsh with them, I don't let my pets near them, and they all break in the same way, fraying near the box. All I ever do is plug them in, charge them, and let the box sit on the floor. So far the longest one has lasted is six months, usually it's only two or three, one even broke within three weeks. This is an awful product, and from the looks of it, enough people have mentioned it that apple should know. Shame on them for not doing anything about it. I don't want to spend $80 over and over to deal with their shoddy work.

Power cord is Prone to fraying.

I have only had my computer for less than two years. And while I enjoy the computer I have had to ante-up and pay to get a new cord during the first year. The plastic near the top of the magnet began fraying and exposed the wire. Which I figured no problem it came free with the computer maybe that's just how it is. So I got a new cord and within a week of my getting it the part near the power supply popped out. I was not too concerned because at least it was still charging my computer. However in the last couple days it's not even doing that anymore. The most it can do is prevent my computer from loosing more power. So now I have to pay up yet again for another power cord. For how expensive things are you think you'd make a good product that wouldn't fray so easily.

i dont know why people complain about the power adapter fraying or tearing. if you take care of it (wrap it correctly) then you wont have a problem. been using mine for about a year and no tears or anything of the sort. i mean, its a power cord. wrap it up right and youll be fine. the only problem i have is the price. $80 for a power adapter is a little steep but it is apple. 4 oout of 5 for that, otherwise it does what its meant to do.

I've used a half-dozen chargers over the last several years and since the MagSafe 2 came out, I've not had a problem with fraying. If you take even a reasonable amount of care in handling the charger and cable you shouldn't have any problems. I plug and unplug my cable on a daily basis and move it to/from work. With MagSafe 2 I've never had any issues.

    Pins stuck again

    • Written by from Youngstown

10 of 10 people found this useful

This is my second charger and once again the pins are sticking so I can't get a good connection to charge. Apple replaced my first one for free no questions asked, and I'm hoping they will do the same one more time. The magnetic charger is a great idea, but these sticking pins are extremely annoying. There is also extreme heat generated with both chargers. I have had my Macbook Pro 15 for about three years and the charger is still better than the other laptops despite the pins sticking, but this is frustrating. I would gladly pay the $80 if I had any faith I won't have the same problems starting again in 6 months.

    Junk!

I have a love/hate relationship with Apple, Inc. This adapter falls on the hate side. You will get one year usage at the maximum which, is absolutely ridiculous considering its price! The cords tear quite easily. Do yourself a favor and purchase elsewhere for half the price. After all, what's the purpose of owning a Macbook Pro if you can't keep it charged! I gave it a 1 star rating for the number of years I've been able to use my power adapter.

    These chargers cables are garbage

It's time for my annual condemnation of the apple chargers - that's because once a year, regardless of how careful I am with my charger, the cable frays and then ceases to work. Apple won't replace them - so that's another $79 out my pocket. I hate these chargers.

    Wow my first Apple complaint

This is my first Apple laptop purchase. I owned my MacBook Pro 15 for little over a year. I think the cord is poorly designed just as the first generation.

I think the cord should have been thicker to begin with.

This should be recalled just as the previos generation. Hopefully a better redesigned.

    It does the job but...

I've had my Macbook Pro for a little over a year and made the mistake of sitting the computer on its edge and crimping the cord. Shortly after it did start to fray and the shielding started to show but the computer still charged. The only disturbing side effect was now on occasion if I was plugged in I could feel a build up of static electricity and would get the occasional jolt.

I really feel that there is a design flaw in that you must replace the whole power supply for a cord that seems to fail often.

    its fine

You people are whiners. If you can find it cheaper buy it somewhere else. Google it. I'm only replacing mine after 2 years because one of the pins in the L connector got pushed in some how, so i "have to position it just right to get the magnetic thingy to work." If your connector is wobbly when you plug it in to your computer, look INSIDE IT, something, MIGHT BE IN THE WAY. I have kids, so I'm surprised it's lasted this long. Durability should never be an issue. Are you using your adapter for nun-chucks or something? It should just sit, and be still while you compute. If you're not computing, what are you doing to your adapter? It was just fine until you touched it.

    Poor Quality

    • Written by from Homer

14 of 14 people found this useful

I really like apple products but this cord is very poorly engineered. I really like that it is magnetic and can plug in either way. I do not feel that I abused this product but from normal wear after a little over a year I had to wiggle the cord to get it to charge. Then it stopped working all together. I agree that they should make the actual cord replaceable! This charger is not worth the $79!!! You can buy the cheaper ones but they are the same design so I would think that this would also happen to them. They should really make a better quality one for what this costs!

I took very good care of my 85W power adapter. It was never abused in any way, and shows no outward signs of problems. And yet it doesn't work, 13 months after purchase. And now Apple wants me to pay $80 for a new one, for a part that can't possibly cost more than $3 to manufacture, when its their OWN SHODDY QUALITY CONTROL that is at fault?

Used to be a mac fan. No more.

It has frayed and the wires have split. I've only had it for a little over a year. It is way over priced. This will be my 2nd time buying a new one, and spending $160 in order to charge my computer is ridiculous.

    MACbook Pro power adapter

10 of 51 people found this useful

I don't know what all these people are whining about. All of you need to shut up and quit abusing your equipment. That is the only way I can see your product not working properly. I have had my same adapter (that came with my MAC) for 3 yrs now and NEVER had any of these issues that these people are complaining about. Mine is just now showing some wear on the cord going into the adapter and I am sure I will have to replace it soon. Other than that, IF your going to complain about Apple, then go buy some other obsolete computer that has far worse power adapters! AND I am not the only Apple user who feels this way.
