Not bad for a One-Year Charger

I use my MacBook Pro for everything. It served me well through my undergrad program. And the first charger worked great from 2007-2010 when the plastic around the plug into the laptop started disintegrating, leaving exposed wire. I got a replacement, and didn't think much about the price, because it was a 3-year old charging cable and was travelled with quite extensively. After a year of having the new charger, the same thing happened! I went back to the Apple store, and after much conversation, I was able to get it replaced free of charge. Now, barely a year later, having the outside plastic near the plug to disintegrate again!! I'm not looking forward to replacing this again, and for every following year. Apple products are amazing - no doubt. But how about some more research on how to make a better charger instead of rolling out new iPhones every year or so.

    So far so good

Compared to my old Powerbook 4G the MBP 2010 i bought is worlds apart and the power cord is much better. I didn't have the old mag power cord so i can't compare but it did look funny with all white plugging into an aluminum body. Have heard of the cord breaking and fraying at the mag. So far it hasn't but i can see where it might, which is why i try to keep it as straight as possible. Depending on how I have it set the cord can get in the way when you move it. If wall is in front of you the cord is away from you, if its behind you it can get a little awkward if you decide to move, but being reversible is an advantage. Im sure there will be improvements in the future, maybe by that time i'll buy another macbook.

I truly wonder how Apple can get the hardware and software so right...

...and get things like power adapters and earbuds so wrong..

The magnetic portion that connects to the MacBook Pro isn't a singular piece, but rather TWO pieces joined together. Someone thought this was a good idea. It wasn't.

Heading to the Apple Store after work to buy a new one.

I've sworn off Apple's earbuds. Terrible quality. I can't swear off the adapter, however, as Apple is the only show in town.

New style Magsafe plug DOES work with 2008 Macbook Pro 4,1

There seems to be confusion whether this adapter works with the older MacBook Pros. I have a 2008 MacBook Pro 4,1 that came with the old style T-shaped plug and found that this new style adapter works just fine. I will say that with my big fingers the new style plug isn't quite as easy to snap into place as the older plug (hence my 4 out of 5 star rating), which may account for the problems others have had with it. Once, the magnet grips the power receptacle however, the coupling is solid.

I've had my unibody mac since summer of 2010 and just recently its magsafe bit the dust. And then smoked a little bit. The sleeving on the mag side split both near the charger body and about a foot from the magsafe connector. Now I'm using the charger from my old mac (2007ish) and it just split right next to the charger body.

We now have a basket of Mac power adaptors that don't work because the wires break where they meet the Magsafe plug. There seems to be to a lot of people with this issue for quite some time (Years?), yet Apple doesn't fix the problem. I love all my Apple products, and everything is trouble free except this part. I am only writing this neg review in hopes that the problem gets noticed and fixed.

I haven't had any issues with this charger I'v owned this for almost a year, previously I've had a W/Macbook for 3 years using the same charger.

I think the people with the low ratings, have issues with wear & tear and not taking care of the cable, I do agree it is a little thing where it attaches with the computer.

Another bad part for a great computer

Like most of the other comments here, my cord has split next to the magnetic end and is in need of being replaced. I'm not a fan of the way these cords are made. If I'm going to pay this much for a computer, I don't want to have to buy a new cord every year to make sure it keeps charging and/or doesn't burn my house down!

I had no choice but to order one now, pins on the L shaped connector are weak and they lead to lose connections after 18 months or so. This is the second adapter I had to order, first one was ditched due to a cable issue.

I have had my MacBook Pro since end 2009. Its a nice computer, but it seems that I go through the MAGSAFE's quite a lot spending wopping US$ 85.00 including tax on it. Just replaced another one. I have at home about 3 now which I can't use. No protection offered for these. I am very much disappointed now.

    $$$$$ for Junk

I got my Mac Book Pro 15-inch mid 2010 in October of 2010. 6 months later, the MagSafe adapter stopped charging. No problem because I have the protection plan. Went in to the Apple support store and they exchanged the cable for no cost due to one of the pins coming loose.

Now, a year later, I need to replace the adapter again because the rubber split. I wouldn't complain, but when you follow the storage instructions and pay $4000 for a product, you would think that the product would hold a high quality standard. Now I get to pull $80 from thin air to buy another one because it is considered "normal wear?"

I can't believe a part that costs $80 is only supposed to last a third of the protection plan time. Almost enough to make me go back to pc.

I've had my MacBook for 2 years and the charger worked until now. I love the magnetic feature BUT it is now overheating within 10 minutes of charging the computer. My battery is only at 35% charged so it's not that my computer is being over charged. And also I am not covering the air channels that keep the computer at a safe temperature. The charger really needs to be redesigned electronically.

I've had my macbook for almost 2 years. I bring the pow3er adapter to work with be, because the battery alone lasts about 3 hours. The wire (magnetic end) on the AC adapter wears down at the junction with the ac adapter and melts.

I wouldn't be buying a new one if the design was sound. Unfortunately, I don't have a choice in product for a more durable wire.

I can't say enough good thing about this power supply. Not only is it beautiful, but (are you sitting down) it powers and charges the Macbook Pro. I would be happy with just one of these functions but it does both. Amazing Apple, you've done it again.

I purchased my macbook three years ago and I'm about to purchase my fourth adapter. WTH Apple? I love your products, I rave about them to everyone. My mac is three years old and you'd think it was brand new. My 5th Generation Ipod from 2005 still works as good as it did seven years ago. Yet i've had to replace this cord three times now. That's $271.20 I've spent on adaptors. I swore Id never go back to PC, but I'm about ready to eat my own words. Getting really tired of forking out more and more money after the already steep price I paid for the macbook. I'm obviously not the only one with this problem, maybe you should start hearing your customers.

The DURABILITY in my opinion, should be better.

I have two thoughts about the adapter. I like and dislike it. The adapter part of the charger is tearing yet the big power cord/extension part is fine. When I bought my MacBook Pro and all of the things that came with it about a year ago now, I really expected it to last a very long time. Now I can say that I played a part in the tearing of the product but nothing too major. Minor steps on the cord or constantly rolling the cord up may be the issue because I am a college student who is not stationary, I use my computer just about everywhere and my charger comes along with me. This product is not inexpensive, $80 is a nice chunk of change for a computer charger. I am not complaining about the price but the quality and durability of this charger should be a lot better, especially considering the fact that it is an Apple product.

Just like its poorly designed predecessor, the new "L-style" MagSafe adapter is prone to fraying. At $89 a pop, these chargers are expensive to constantly replace.

There is literally no reason for so vital a product to be so unreliable, especially when it comes attached to another product.
The fraying is so bad I almost thought I had some insects or even a mouse gnawing on my power cord. Not little frays either - gnarly snarls of rubber that had reached its limit (apparently only about 6 months).
Apple, if you're going to make that will warrant buying replacements, at least make it cost much less to replace it.
