    Awful Charger

    • Written by from Mariaville

Mac chargers are very expensive and break so easily! The wires feeding into the computer clip are ultra prone to getting damaged. I have replaced my cord several times with several models and no matter how careful I am, it's life span is woefully disappointing. For the price, it should be far better. At the very least you should be able to replace only the section prone to damage and not the whole cord!

my power cord frayed and burned

    • Written by from NIPIGON

I had a power cord from a 2004 mac book pro that still works. The current one to go with a 17 inch mac book pro has already frayed and burned with the same type of usage as the last older laptop.

    Overheats and melts the cord

    • Written by

I've gone through at least 4 cords all because the adapter overheats (to the point where it almost burns your flesh) and melts the cord and then eventually the wires become frayed. Luckily every time I go into my genius bar they have never charged me for a new cord. I certainly would not spend $79 on this cord if they continue to have this problem. I love Mac in every other sense of the word except for their chargers

I'm worried I'll catch on fire!

    • Written by from Mill Valley

I love my MacBook Pro! And am a long time Mac user. Yay! My only issue is their power cords. Whether it's this latest model or the one before each one frays near where it connects to the laptop. One time it started flaming. That was scary. I like John's idea that Apple should make and cell new cables that go from the laptop to the power square. I would buy a bunch of those. I don't need new AC cables. Those last forever. But I am really bummed having to spend $79 on new power cords.

It's Too Bad - We have no other option!

    • Written by from Camas

Would be nice for Apple to work on getting these things dialed in. Particularly as, it is the only way to charge a laptop. I'm about to purchase our 5th one - the connection where the wire meets the adapter just doesn't last - at all. Come on Apple - we expect better from you on this kind of thing.

    Works great on 2007 MBP

    • Written by from Windsor

My old charger with the straight connector failed after 6 years. This new charger works perfect with my 2007 15" MBP. Never had any problems with the cord.

    Lets talk heating issues

    • Written by from north canton

I have had 3 of these chargers in the past 4 years. Two lost to overheating one lost to fraying. It has been approx. 365 days since my last genius bar visit and sure enough another overheat.

I use my laptop for graphic design purposes everyday for work and at home. Apple boasts better graphics and faster processing - so why, when my mac is so perfect and wonderful, was my charger not built to keep up with my computer?

Thankfully the genius bar folks have never charged me for a new charger as they recognize this is a problem. Good customer service but a terrible product.

    has worked well for me

    • Written by from Albuquerque

I've had my MBP for almost three years. I've used the charger in a pretty average way during this time and it just now beginning to have issues with charging.
Just a counter point to all these "max life of 6 month" reviews.

    No problems but

    • Written by from Long Beach

I've had my Mac Book Pro for almost 3 yrs with no problems with the cords but my dog went crazy & stepped on the plug , tweaking it in the jack. It still works but it I take it out, I'll never get it back in. I found out that it comes in two pieces. I wish Apple would sell the plug part separately.

    Idea for Improvement

    • Written by from Montrose

Like most others here I have had issues with fraying of the cords, that connect to the computer. Since Apple has constructed the charger so that you can change out the cord that connects to the wall outlet, for different countries. Why not design the charger to have a similar quick change connecter for the cord that connects to the computer and then just sell replacement cords for $20 as they become worn? You have proven that you know how to do this. Just look at the cord that connects to the wall outlet.

It would be nice if Apple would respond to the criticisms that have been made in the reviews for this product since there have been so many for the same issue. If nothing else at least acknowledge that you hear what customers are saying.

    • Written by from Montclair

love the length... and that's it... the thicker wire (charge pack to wall) breaks/frays.... i get that i bend it every time i wrap it back up but c'mon - i'm about to drop another $79.00 and we're trapped because what's the alternative?

    Fried on me.

    • Written by from San Gabriel

Ya Apple, I love your products but you really need to take another look at these chargers. They start to fray at the connection points and eventually just fry up. I thought I lost my whole mac too. For what we are paying, they should be better.

I tolerated the replacing, until I smelled the burning.

    • Written by from Portland

Frederic M and Cynthia B - you guys must have the magic touch because I'm replacing my charger again for my 17" MacBook Pro. Note: I give a ton of r-e-s-p-e-c-t to my computer equipment because I am a p-o-o-r s-t-u-d-e-n-t and cannot afford to continually replace or mistreat these items. To address the possibility that the complaints are being orchestrated from one negative source, it is quite possible that these complaints are indeed from one negative source: a large group of customers that have to keep replacing their chargers.

I don't take issue with having to replace the charger, as things do happen with wires over the years. The frequency with which I am having to replace this $79.00 charger within 3 years of purchasing my laptop is discouraging and makes me question the QC of these items. Maybe it's the frequency with which I use my laptop that makes the difference between the Frederics and Cynthias of the world and the Negative Nellys like me; however, my charger wire shouldn't fray and smell like burnt rubber with respectable treatment of my equipment in less than a year. Let's review the quality on these things, shall we Apple?

    Why the complaining?

    • Written by from West Vancouver

I don't know why people complain all the time but don't other laptop charger accessories heat up as well? I mean energy is heat, right? Also, I have had my mac book pro 17 for 3 years now and my charger is still up and running. Of course, this does not apply to everyone, perhaps I am the only person in the world who has the ultra-lasting apple charger.

    Can I give ZERO stars

    • Written by from Danville

I paid close to $1800.00 for BOOK PRO and the cable is already out, in less than 24 months, this is UNACCEPTABLE. We expect better from you or we can just go and buy Dell for $700-$800 dollars and replace it every few years.

On 3rd brick - previous 2 caught fire.

    • Written by from Vancouver

If I could rate this overpriced garbage lower, I would.
Just bought 3rd brick. Average life is about 1 year. They always go in the same place - right where the cable between the brick and the notebook connects to the brick. One caught fire in a hotel room in Chicago. Replaced. The other just went while I was playing a game on my bed. In both cases I was REALLY glad I was awake.
Since it's a proprietary connector I have no option except to give Apple $90 for a replacement. It's salt in the wound that It's EXACTLY the same flawed design. I'm sure in about a year I'll be replacing the brick AGAIN.
This will be the last Apple laptop I buy. I need reliability, and a power adapter that values style over engineering doesn't fit that bill.
    Grrrrrrrrr, Apple! GRRRRRR!

POOR DESIGN ! (continually replacing power cords every year)

    • Written by from el dorado hills

POOR DESIGN ! I do continually replacing power cords every year.

Why cant apple design a great sturdy power cord - or have a better warranty on them? The powercord ALWAYS heats up.

    Doesn't last, overpriced.

    • Written by from Larchmont

Apple, I give you so much money. SO MUCH. And where does it go? Into producing an 80 dollar charger for my 1500 dollar computer that doesn't even last 6 months? This is ridiculous. I swear to god if I have to buy another charger (this is my fourth since buying the computer last June), I'm buying a PC. Apple, get it together please.

Excellent quality - I question the source of all the negativity

    • Written by from Centennial

Our family has had 3 MacBook Pros, the oldest being bought over 5 year ago. None of the power adapters have failed, nor been anything but durable and fully functional. I've had Dells, Toshiba, NEC, and Samsung laptops, over decades, and none of these units and associated accessories have come anywhere close to Apple quality, to say nothing of the Windows products to which they have been wedded from the very beginning. I'm a 74 yr. old techie, retired lawyer, experienced in analyzing alleged complaints, and my gut feel is that many of these negative submissions are being orchestrated from a common source. Lastly, I'm buying a new one solely to replace one that's been lost.
