Worked for about a year, but stops working if the cord is placed a certain way.. Probably a short or something within the cord, can't believe I paid $80 for this junk.

I don't understand why Apple doesn't allow you to buy just the half of the cord that ALWAYS frays. $80 is a lot of money to be dropping on these things every few months. If the design is so great, then fine - let us just spend $25 on the piece that needs replacing. I've got so many of the intact half that I could build a house with them.

I also don't like that I lose a USB port because the design of this blocks it.

So I've had my charger for about a year and it started fraying at the base of the magnetic connector. Finally it just stopped working. For how much money I spent on my macbook pro I thought maybe the charger would hold up. I guess not. Anyways I was able to take the charger apart (with help from a hacksaw), and repaired it. I guarantee it will never break again. I would have given it a 1 star if it wasn't for the fact that the power supply still works.

I couldn't understand why my Mac wasn't charging, and was worried that there was a problem with the A/C board. My boyfriend let me borrow his power cord, and that solved the problem. After reading the other reviews, I realize I am not alone. Apple really needs to improve upon this product, or lower the price to replace it.

My thoughts are that the charger should last as long as the life of the computer. I have had my Macbook Pro for under two years. As a college student, it would be nice if it lasted longer. They should realize that the thin cord needs to last through taking it in and out of backpacks, traveling, some bending and overall abuse by the user. Not all of us can just treat it like gold, especially college students. On top of that, there is the issue of price. After i realized that my inner cord had frayed and my computer can only charge if it is hanging off a desk, I looked up the price. Since I'm in college, I can't afford to throw $80 down the hole for some rubber and plastic. It should not be that expensive for students in college.

    disappointed in durability

I bought into the Apple world a dew years ago based on higher quality and less issues for my wife and family. I had to use a Windows machine for work and did not make the switch until November 2010 when i was finally fed up with Dell and Windows and bought a 17inch macbook out of my own pocket for work. I have liked making the switch, even thought there are a few minor frustrations with compatibilities. However, I would expect a power cord to last more than 17 to 18 months.

All of the sudden the outer insulation, the rubbery skin, started splitting and peeling away. I wrapped it in electrical tape and it continued to work for a couple weeks but now it has stopped charging my macbook. I am ok to pay top dollar for quality and overall I am pleased with Apple quality but this is a disappointing detail. and in my experience it is the little things that can unravel a business.

from snooping the internet i see this is not unique to me. I hope they get this fixed and soon since these are $80 a pop and I am starting tho think i need to buy one every year or so so always have a spare ready as the current one ages out!

My computer is only 9 months old and I am having to order another power adapter!!! C'mon, why is this?? The cord tangles for no reason and now the wires are frayed at the connection to the adaptor. I am VERY disappointed and have been an Apple user all of my computer days (since the little box desktop). I hate to have to spend the money!!!!

The MagSafe power adapter for the MacBook Pro impressed me as yet another example of Apple genius -- until the connector cord frayed and severed the connection, just like the old adapter did on my old Power Book, To avoid missing two days of production on a deadline that won't wait, I now have to drive 130 miles round trip to an Apple store that I hope has a replacement in stock. Add the cost of fuel, vehicle use, time away from work, and the $79 plus tax for the adapter, and it adds up to a major issue that should never have occurred in a vital product that Apple has had many years to ponder and perfect. I'll add to the chorus here and urge Apple to produce a separate cord between the adapter box and computer, that can be bought as a $10 or even $25 spare item, ready to use whenever this problem occurs,

I have taken immaculate care of my MagSafe adapter, yet it started splitting at the MS plug end. I attempted to repair it and now the length of the cord between the laptop and the adapter module is splitting. Not a device that wear and tear should be an issue as it never leaves my living room, It never sits in direct sunlight, so it should not be splitting. Granted, it still works, but I worry about future safety.

Cord makes false contact, need to replace the whole thing

I have to spend over $80 to replace an original MAC product for which you pay a premium price already. Make the cable portion detachable or use a thicker gauge or threaded cable.
I tried MAC to get away from poor Windows OS performance, now having a HD that overheats, slow OS maybe running on Sea Lion and now the charger.
Not satisfied. E-ve-ry-thing I bought from MAC needed to be fixed or replaced most of the times right out of the factory.
This actually cannot help others make decisions, you are stuck, you have to buy it if you own a Mac lap top.

I paid a bunch of money for a MacBook Pro because everyone raves how good Macs are. I love my computer. However, for the amount of money I paid for the computer I should get a decent charger. I will be purchasing my second power cord, not including the one that was included with the computer.

    A little annoyed

I have been a loyal Apple customer since the 1990s (when I was a little girl) I am now a College student and Apple's products have steadily declined over the years. However, up until the most recent models I never had serious problems with any of Apple's machines or accessories. Until this year. I bought a new MacBookPro with the new style of power cord. My power cord has frayed 3 times this year. I do not treat my cords particularly badly, I simply use my computer as it was meant to be used, in fact it has seen much less abuse than most of my old computers as it spends most of it's time on my desk. the power cord has been almost continuously connected to the computer and rarely moves from it's location (except to follow me on school breaks, in which it lives properly coiled up in a suitcase). I take care of my technology, since without it I am organizationally challenged, but I do expect some attention to be shown to durability. There was a time when Apple had the best products on the market that time however apparently ended in 1999 as no product that I have used since then from this company has ever been up to snuff. I preferred the old T-style chargers as they were actually LESS fragile (although I'll admit the flipping upside down has some benefits). I am now buying a new one, it better work for longer than the old one or I might just go buy a Dell laptop and dump my MacBookPro, with it's faulty charger on my little brother. The only reason I'm not doing that now is that I am still under warranty. really? I've had to buy 2 new cords in 1 year? I am a College student,$79 is a huge part of my budget. it means I'll have to skimp even more than I already do, and my rumbling tummy does NOT appreciate this.

Just had to replace my mag safe charger with this one after 40 months of good use. Apparently that is an incredible run! It's outrageous that three years is exceptional for a basic cable with a magnet on the end. For all the quality and craftsmanship of the computers, please stop making junk accessories to make them work.

    Travel Warning

I travel extensively with a larger-than-normal amount of electronics ---all of which I take excellent care of. However this is now the second time that a Magsafe Power Adapter (85W) has had a problem with the narrow cord fraying and breaking at the point where it joins the tapered piece on the side of the adapter proper ---despite intentionally trying to "baby" it. I've been using Apple products since 1989, normally recommend them to others, and at first thought that the Magsafe adapter was the most clever design yet for a power adapter. However, although the magnetic connection has worked out okay, the point at which the narrow cord joins to the "power brick" is completely inadequate for real world travel.

ApparentIy 27 months makes my MagSafe a prizewinner!

Well my MagSafe lasted 27 months and by looking at other reviews that makes it quite out of the ordinary. However I have treated it with kid gloves to make it last that long. Unfortunately it is not nearly long enough for a laptop power supply. I have had several laptops and dozens of other electronic devices over three decades that use similar external "brick" power supplies and have never had a single one go bad before the device it powered died. An excellent example of endurance is the power adaptor that came with my 2004 VAIO laptop. It has taken a beating over the years including a 5-foot drop onto tile that broke the case -- but it still works! It appears that Apple put so much confidence in the magnetic connection reducing the torsion and shear forces on the cable that they cut back on the standard strain reliefs others use so that mere normal movement back and forth will break the conductors at the connectors.
I did give it 2 stars because it was an innovative design that was super easy to connect and disconnect, was smaller than most adaptors, and relatively light. I could not give it a better rating because 1) the skimpy stress relief reduces its "field life" and 2) the sparking when you plug it into the AC outlet (this happens on both the MagSafes we have) concerns me, startles the cat, and poses a potential fire hazard.
One final tip, if you buy an extended warranty for your laptop, check to see if it covers the power adaptor.

The durability of these things are completely awful. One overheated in 2 years of owning a mac laptop, the other just burnt out on my today (using a friends for now).

When it worked though, it worked fine and did the job it is supposed to do.

Apple: Make stronger, more durable chargers or outsource your design to someone who can. As a consumer I (not any other customer) should be paying upwards of 80-90 bucks for a product that should last for 5-10 years (like other chargers) only live out for 2 years at best.

    Doesn't last

When we got our first mac 18 months ago, I thought the magnetic power connection was a cool feature. If someone tripped over the cord, it would disconnect and not send the laptop flying. wonderful. In hindsight, after owning PC laptops for years and years, I've never had a power cord fail me within 18 months (or at all, actually) nor have i had damage from a flying laptop.

On the other hand, the magnetic mac power connect seems susceptible to shorting at the connector. Even though the wires on the "L" version, which I have, go straight out from the connector, 18 months later I definitely have a short in the power supply. No power, no Mac. So, I'm shelling out $79 for a part that has never caused me an issue on any other laptop i've owned. that's seriously disappointing. And, to add insult to injury, Apple support (express lane) says that I have to pay an incident fee to consult them on the issue. They don't say what the fee is when the option to buy it comes up, but that's ridiculous, so I exited the express lane. It's clearly shorted.

I treat my computer great, but taking off the charger eventually only breaks. It makes getting a replacement necessary, but not for $79. Would love for Apple to compensate a charger after spending nearly a couple thousand on the laptop..
