    Chargers are problematic

    • Written by from Windham

I have had my MacBook Pro four years now and am on my third charger. The factory supplied charger and the second charger both had broken wires. The Genius Bar told me that it was because I was wrapping the cord too tight. I always used the ears on the charger to wrap the cord, nothing abnormal. This design flaw has cost me $160 thus far. I love my Mac but something needs to be done with the chargers.

    Awful Charger

Mac chargers are very expensive and break so easily! The wires feeding into the computer clip are ultra prone to getting damaged. I have replaced my cord several times with several models and no matter how careful I am, it's life span is woefully disappointing. For the price, it should be far better. At the very least you should be able to replace only the section prone to damage and not the whole cord!

    Overheats and melts the cord

I've gone through at least 4 cords all because the adapter overheats (to the point where it almost burns your flesh) and melts the cord and then eventually the wires become frayed. Luckily every time I go into my genius bar they have never charged me for a new cord. I certainly would not spend $79 on this cord if they continue to have this problem. I love Mac in every other sense of the word except for their chargers

I'm worried I'll catch on fire!

I love my MacBook Pro! And am a long time Mac user. Yay! My only issue is their power cords. Whether it's this latest model or the one before each one frays near where it connects to the laptop. One time it started flaming. That was scary. I like John's idea that Apple should make and cell new cables that go from the laptop to the power square. I would buy a bunch of those. I don't need new AC cables. Those last forever. But I am really bummed having to spend $79 on new power cords.

It's Too Bad - We have no other option!

Would be nice for Apple to work on getting these things dialed in. Particularly as, it is the only way to charge a laptop. I'm about to purchase our 5th one - the connection where the wire meets the adapter just doesn't last - at all. Come on Apple - we expect better from you on this kind of thing.

    Lets talk heating issues

I have had 3 of these chargers in the past 4 years. Two lost to overheating one lost to fraying. It has been approx. 365 days since my last genius bar visit and sure enough another overheat.

I use my laptop for graphic design purposes everyday for work and at home. Apple boasts better graphics and faster processing - so why, when my mac is so perfect and wonderful, was my charger not built to keep up with my computer?

Thankfully the genius bar folks have never charged me for a new charger as they recognize this is a problem. Good customer service but a terrible product.

    Idea for Improvement

Like most others here I have had issues with fraying of the cords, that connect to the computer. Since Apple has constructed the charger so that you can change out the cord that connects to the wall outlet, for different countries. Why not design the charger to have a similar quick change connecter for the cord that connects to the computer and then just sell replacement cords for $20 as they become worn? You have proven that you know how to do this. Just look at the cord that connects to the wall outlet.

It would be nice if Apple would respond to the criticisms that have been made in the reviews for this product since there have been so many for the same issue. If nothing else at least acknowledge that you hear what customers are saying.

    Can I give ZERO stars

I paid close to $1800.00 for BOOK PRO and the cable is already out, in less than 24 months, this is UNACCEPTABLE. We expect better from you or we can just go and buy Dell for $700-$800 dollars and replace it every few years.

On 3rd brick - previous 2 caught fire.

If I could rate this overpriced garbage lower, I would.
Just bought 3rd brick. Average life is about 1 year. They always go in the same place - right where the cable between the brick and the notebook connects to the brick. One caught fire in a hotel room in Chicago. Replaced. The other just went while I was playing a game on my bed. In both cases I was REALLY glad I was awake.
Since it's a proprietary connector I have no option except to give Apple $90 for a replacement. It's salt in the wound that It's EXACTLY the same flawed design. I'm sure in about a year I'll be replacing the brick AGAIN.
This will be the last Apple laptop I buy. I need reliability, and a power adapter that values style over engineering doesn't fit that bill.
    Grrrrrrrrr, Apple! GRRRRRR!

POOR DESIGN ! I do continually replacing power cords every year.

Why cant apple design a great sturdy power cord - or have a better warranty on them? The powercord ALWAYS heats up.

Apple, I give you so much money. SO MUCH. And where does it go? Into producing an 80 dollar charger for my 1500 dollar computer that doesn't even last 6 months? This is ridiculous. I swear to god if I have to buy another charger (this is my fourth since buying the computer last June), I'm buying a PC. Apple, get it together please.

    Frays SO easily

I treat my cords well. I keep one at my desk and one travels with me. BOTH frayed within a year. And I still have to order new ones (NOT cheap) because it's not like I can go without! I love apple products, but their adaptors are awful.

    Short Circuit

The reviews about the bad design of this chord are right on. Since the chord is fully attached to the power adapter core, it can become frayed over time (~ 1+ year) and in my case it actually started smoking out and then sparked at the frayed point and I almost thought I lost my MacBook Pro when the screen went black! I quickly disconnected the power, tested the battery meter and powered it on again. It came back alive...thank goodness. Nevertheless, this is a BAD design and it can even become dangerous! Apple, are you listening? I want a new chord, on your dime!

I've had this charger for a few months (it's the 3rd charger I've had to buy for a computer that was purchased less than 3 years ago). The wire is BARELY frayed and it's not working. Now I'm going to buy 2 new chargers in case the first one fails as quickly and I'm left without a charger yet again. APPLE - FIX YOUR CHARGERS!!!!

    Broken Cord

Two weeks ago I had to purchase a new charger for my wife. Now, I have to purchase one for me. In both cases we just have broken cords right where anyone (except Apple) would expect it to break - right at the connection to the charger.
    Apple, what are you doing?
Please, do something o fix this poor design!

This thing is so terribly worthless, it might just be the final straw that drives me back to windows. You need to balance your MacBook on a table in a vacuum. Otherwise, this piece of garbage will fall out. Even then it may not feel like charging! I am so mad, I just may burn the freakin' thing!

    Frayed cord

I think I am getting a new apple 85W Magsafe Power Adaptor tomorrow or should I even bother to spend money on this poorly design adaptor because the old one I bought one and a half year ago was broken. It was like frayed cord near the very end that attached to the charger. It will be my 3rd adaptor in 3 year using my MBP. Should Apple spend a little time taking care of their customer's real need?

Thanks for those who speak up lol

    Poor execution

    • Written by from Derby

16 of 17 people found this useful

I like the idea of a magnetic connection. I think the concept is great. But the execution if deeply flawed. The cable isn't secure at the magnetic connector resulting if fraying and premature failure. No other cables that I own have this problem, only Apple.

    STEP UP APPLE.

This shouldn't be an $80 part and it sure shouldn't wear out this quickly for being an $80 part.

Quite frankly, I'm tempted when it come time to replace this computer of not going Apple just because of this problem.

Just left the Apple store, they called it accidently occurence. I wish they would just make a better product that would last more than a year. They did replace it once for me. I was very careful with this one and it still frayed at the top just below the magnet. Now it is covering with electrical tape.
