    Unreliable

    • Written by from Novara

Macbook pro purchased on 2011. Now I'm in 2014 and I'm getting the 3rd adapter.
The 1st one broke on 2013 due to a short occurred to the cable external cover that broke and generated a short: everybody know of the bad quality of these cables, this the real weak point of such adapters
The 2nd one broke on 2014, after 11 months of usage, due to an internal capacitor that failed (I could hear the noise while it failed).
Now I'm at the 3rd one. Should I get a 4th one as replacement... just in case?

    Thin cable jacket ripped

    • Written by from san diego

I like the magnetic idea and the look of the charger, but after about a year the cable that goes from the computer to the transformer has ripped. For a charger that is 80 bucks, this should not happen. There is no reason why this charger shouldn't last longer than a year for 80 dollars. Obvious other people feel the same way. Apple please fix this. If the connection was detachable then I could just buy the smaller chord again, but its not. :o(

    Not worth it

    • Written by from Rochester

This cord is not resistant enough. I just bought my second one less than a year ago and its already burned out. The problem is always the cord bending. There sure be an accessory that can protect it from bending.

    Horrible quality - WAY overpriced.

    • Written by from Boca Raton

I took pretty good care of this charger and after about 2 years it just stopped working and I had to wiggle it around to get it to work. The laptop itself still works like new. What gives? My fiance fixed it temporarily a couple times with solder and electrical tape, but it doesn't fix it for good. Just tonight it stopped working completely, even after moving the cord around for several minutes. I'm not about to spend another $80 on a charger that doesn't work any better than one that's $10.

    Cord frayed out

    • Written by from Ridgeland

The bottom of my cord frayed and i had a short burn through the cable. I've had it a year and a half. I also had the clip that you're supposed to wind that cord around break after six months. This thing is expensive and should be more durable.

Back to the Apple Store - One a Year

    • Written by from Lincoln

The first time I had a problem, I thought I was simply mishandling the cord or twisting it the wrong way. A weak spot in the cord one day snapped and began fraying, about a month later there was nothing but exposed wire. Now I am on my fourth adapter because of this same exact problem. As a college student this is a huge inconvenience, I've already paid premium price for my computer, so having to continually buy overpriced and faulty adapters seems like an insult. Why have there been no upgrades over the past 4 years?

The magnet connector would work great and the light indicator is always reliable. The three prong connector along with two prong adapter is very convenient. However the benefits of this cable mean nothing when it becomes un-functional.

Small Cable Mod saves you $$ and annoyance

    • Written by from New Bedford

I agree with the design flaws. But I uprchased white electrical tape for $2-3 and wrapped the thinner cable that's built into the Power Adapter to strengthen it. It's the same cable that came w/ my MBP from 2011 and it's in mint condition. That small mod has saved me any issues with it fraying or bending/breaking, and with white tape you can't even notice it.

That location is the weakest part of the cable design in my opinion. I'll wrap the Port connector end if it starts to show wear but it's still in great shape. Just figured i'd try to help instead of leaving the 1,000,000th "poor cable" review...

One day it worked and the next it didn't

    • Written by from College Place

I've had my computer for 14 months and haven't had a problem until today. Noticed my power supply was at 8% after charging overnight, and the amber or green indicator light was not on. Unplugged, re-plugged, changed outlets, tried to reboot the SMS - no luck. Never a problem until today. Reading the reviews, I have to agree...Apple get your stuff together and stop making such an inferior accessory.

    Melty Cord

    • Written by from Bullhead City

I've had this power cord for two years and suddenly last week the cord got so hot near the power block that it melted a hole right through the casing. I immediately got some electrical tape and taped it up tight to keep it all together but I knew I would have to replace it soon. I noticed only two days later that it was getting hot again and had melted the electrical tape and the casing was coming apart like butter. Now I have to spend $80 of a cord that should last as long as the computer. C'mon, apple. Fix this, please!

    Need Improvement on Design

    • Written by from Cincinnati

I think there could be improvement on the design. I really wish there was a T shape adaptor to plug in. Since this is an L Shape adaptor, I can't connect an ethernet cord while charging my laptop because there is no space. Makes no sense. I sometimes need to do battery consuming projects while connected to the internet, so I really wish Apple would offer a T shape adaptor for my Mac Pro.

Besides that, my last charger lasted me 4 years, which is pretty good.

Every one I've had has broken

    • Written by from Brooklyn

I've had 3 of these on three different computer. ALL adapters have broken, usually wear cable meets actual adapter and also where it plugs in. They were not mistreated. Otherwise, design is cool! Magnet cool.

    Explanation of Rating

    • Written by from Grosse Pointe Shores

First, this adapter doesn't deserve any stars at ALL (why no negative integer options?). It's my fourth in 3.5 years, including the one that was included with the purchase of my MBP. I don't know if the whole MagSafe concept fails due to defective design, manufacturing on the cheap, or that the adapters and logic boards are incapable of playing nice with each other--I suspect all three might be responsible. For whatever reason, these things are beyond substandard. Despite not having done anything to fry (and I do mean that literally) my first MagSafe, I began treating their replacements with more consideration than some members of my family. I even slipped plastic tubing over the affected area as a preemptive strike--nothing works. I suspect Apple only sells replacement adapters as a two-part purchase because offering one piece or another would constitute acknowledgement that a problem exists. The $79 asking price is criminal extortion. HOWEVER, in all fairness, I took the adapter to a local Apple store, hoping against hope that I'd get the satisfaction I deserved and despite no longer being covered by AppleCare, that's exactly what happened. The "genius" was a pleasant young woman who went through the motions of asking me questions, half-heartedly suggesting it was my fault, then replaced the affected part of the adapter and sent me on my way. It's because Apple stepped up to the plate and graciously replaced the adapter free of charge that I'm assigning stars at all.

1 year 3 months of light use and the cord is frayed

    • Written by from Seattle

I purchased a new 85w charger at the Apple store 15 months ago and about a week ago the cord started fraying. The cord is now frayed in two places. I don't take the laptop many places so I'm not super demanding on the cord.
The charging aspect of the adaptor worked well, but with light use and a frayed cord, I'm not pleased at having to buy another one 15 months later.

Once it starts to fray, it progresses very quickly.

    • Written by from Chapel Hill

I have used my new power adapter for 18 months and never noticed any fraying. Once I noticed a small split, it seems like the plastic almost disintegrated right at the magnet end. Even though it still charges, the exposed wire can't be very safe.

    Doesn't last

    • Written by from FORT MCMURRAY

The charger works great-at first. However, I am now on my third power cord because the first one frayed and stopped working, the second one just stopped charging, and now I have had to order a third cord! And they aren't cheap! This is getting ridiculous. I also live in a town where they don't have these cords, so I always have to place an online order and spend time without my computer. This is very inconvenient.

    Lasted for one year

    • Written by from Brighton

After 1 year and couple months of using the power adaptor (L-connector for MacBook Pro early 2012) the cord melted and wires inside it were broken. Well... I was disappointed and expected better quality from Apple. I brought it to Genius bar in Apple Store and they replaced it for free. They have a special program for that.
