    Common Problem Apparently

    • Written by from Leawood

I never, ever write reviews for products, but I felt compelled to echo what so many others have stated. The little cord managed to wrangle itself from the brick enough to no longer charge my laptop unless I hold it and force it back in. The protective sleeve is okay, but obviously the internal connection has been severed/damaged somehow. Please make the cord magnetic on both ends, or simply make it a plug in (like the wall cord), that way we can buy a $2 replacement cord instead of the $79 unit. I know why that will never happen though...

FOUR + YEARS ON ONE POWER ADAPTER!

    • Written by from KIRKLAND

I'm a "MAC" as the old commercial says. My PB Pro is the 2009 mid-yr version. I use to go thru powercords
like they were water going thru a sieve. I went thru so many on my older MB's that I ordered them 2 at a
time so I'd never be without one. Then, I bought this MBP and as was my custom, I ordered a spare
power plug at the same time.

I don't know what all the negative reviews are about. It's now Spring 2014, just a few months short of 5 yrs
since I bought this MB Pro. A couple months ago, I finally replaced the original power plug because the wire
broke at the white adapter (square).

This was MY FAULT. I use my MBP in bed and almost always run off the power supply, rather than the battery.
However, because of how it gets used, everything is constantly being moved around and the block can very easily
slide off the bed. It took 4 and 1/2 + yrs of this jerking and hanging to finally break the wire within the cord at the block.

Also, I have 2 little dogs who get tangled in the cord--no problem! The magnetic connection releases so no one
nor any equipment gets hurt. I love the magnetic connection, it put an end to replacing the power supply every
    6 mos. or so.

I don't understand the problems everyone is having.

My block only gets hot if it's been buried under bedding-- unlike the old ones. If that happens, when I notice it,
I move it out and it immediately cools off.

If you use the little "catch" (cord minder) a few inches off the magnetic plug to form a loop in the cord,
there's no stress (bending) of the wire at the plug. Also, it's a good idea, as with any electrical cord, to not
allow it to get twisted-- or should I say stay twisted. It only takes a second to untwist the cord when that
happens. You can't expect to continually twist any wire without it eventually breaking.

Perhaps people need to be a little more aware of how they treat the cords or, perhaps, the supplier or specs
changed since I got mine but I sure can't complain about the quality of the ones I bought almost 5 yrs ago.

    Terrible Product

This charger constantly gets frayed and the heads fall off of the cable due to the moronic design. Though meant to stay out of the way when plugged in, it often gets twisted and turned when plugged in. I have been through 3 of these in 2 years, absolute worst.

Didn't fail until nearly 4 years of ownership

    • Written by from Tecumseh

I've had my MacBook Pro for nearly 4 years, and with daily use, transporting computer and cord in my bag all over the place, I haven't had issues with the cord until the last month. The coating had a small split a couple inches from the mag end. I wrapped the coating back around it, secured it with a couple inches of tape and waited till I could replace it.

This is a good cord, I wrap it carefully around the tabs on the block making sure not to twist it more than necessary, and it's lasted me this long. If so many people are having issues where they're needing to replace it every few months, maybe they are the ones doing something wrong.

    Disappointment over time

    • Written by from Vrghuly

I've had a macbook pro for years so I have experienced different versions of the magsafe power adapter. They all have the same flaw. after some time, maybe a year, it starts to melt the cover exposing the cable. This slowly evolves to the cable burning itself out and not even having contact with the computer. It is truly disappointing how apple has not solved this issue when its been well over 6 years.

    Incomprehensible

    • Written by from Hamilton

It is beyond comprehension that Apple still manufactures cords like this. Between the Powerbook I used to have, and the Macbook Pro I have now, I am about to purchase my SIXTH cord. Because I know they are poorly designed, I try to be very careful with the cord, but yet they still fail. It is completely frustrating that Apple does not fix this problem. Perhaps they make money this way? If so, it really is off-putting. I did buy a knock-off cord once that lasted at least as long as the Apple cords, for $40 less!.

This cord lasts way too short for the price!! It frays within a year and then breaks on you. Even with proper care, it just frays at the end because of bending.

    Terrible Engineering

    • Written by from Kanata

These power adapters fail between the power brick and the mag safe connector. Then when they do fail, you have to replace the entire adapter. Modularize this product a bit more and you will have something that you can be truly proud of.

Whoever designed this product should be sentenced to a liftime of wiggling the power cable around in hopes of seeing that green light on the MagSafe connector.

In my case the cable didn t fray. The hole thing just died. Only a year since I bought my MBP, and I m very careful with it.
Of course you already know this problem, and are not willing to solve it because that s also your business.
    I m really disappointed.

    Horrible Power Supply

    • Written by from Houston

Okay so I thought I just had bad luck with power cords but apparently Apple just makes bad cords. I have had my Macbook Pro for a little over 3 years and have gone through 3 power supplies. After reading these reviews I see that I have the same problems everyone else is having with them fraying at the mag end where it connects to the computer. Having to constantly spend $80 dollars on replacements is way too much especially when all I need is the cord from the brick to the laptop and not the entire power supply. Come on Apple get it together.

Poor quality at a premium price

    • Written by from LONG ISLAND CITY

My power cord was broken right from the point where it connects to the adapter. I taped it to prevent further damage, but when the tape melted I realized something nasty was going on. It was horribly hot. It could have started a fire.

Why the joint is not more rugged? Why is the outer cable (that covers the inner cable like a shield) so thin?

Apple has to ix this, this is unacceptable!

Rarely have I been so disappointed.

    • Written by from Lincoln

As a pretty realistic consumer, I understand things cost money and companies place premiums on name brand products. The fact that a computer charger is $80 is perhaps the most ludicrous thing I have encountered in the past few years of shopping and consuming tech products.

Not only that, but this charger BARELY holds up with daily computer use, wear and tear, along with travel.

    Magsafe power Adapter #fail

    • Written by from Drexel Hill

My laptop is 2 years old, and I am on my 3rd power adapter. The newest one went after 6 months. They split in the middle of the cord, and I'm forced to spend another $80 on a new one, instead of getting a $10 part. Very frustrating. I'm waiting to get a shock one of these days, since this happens unexpectedly and in various places. I would expect that an $80 cord would last longer the 6 month, considering Apple raves about their products. Seeing so many complaints regarding this issue, you would think they would fix it, and recall the originals. Apple, I'm very disappointed in your quality.

Tired of this expensive cheap junk!

    • Written by from Sherwood

This is Number 4 for me...I cannot believe that Apple can get away with making faulty equipment, sell it at an outrageous price, and not offer the customer a better solution than to pay $79.00 for a new cord. I am really unhappy with this product. My power cord is frayed, and outer casing is splitting, yet again. Power cord are suppose to be made to last a lifetime, and at this price, it should..or at least have free replacements. The battery life is just as bad, and I need a new one of those as well...I am thinking my next computer, won't be an over priced, cheaply made Apple! Hopefully, they can resolve the issues they have!

Each time it breaks in the same spot, on the thin wire, right next to the brick. This time as soon as I got the charger, I wrapped that area in a bunch of electric tape, hoping that it will last longer now.
