Reviews for Apple 30-pin to VGA Adapter

I already ordered this before reading the reviews, but when I read them, most of them were talking about how they couldn't mirror EVERYTHING that was showing on the iPad screen, but I just decided to test it out anyway. I used this to connect my iPad to a projector, and it did exactly what I expected it to do - it mirrored everything on my iPad 2 perfectly!
It also works with my Sony BRAVIA TV which also has a VGA Port, and again, it mirrors everything perfectly.
I'm not sure why other reviews are saying that it only mirrors videos and power points and supported apps, but maybe that's just for the first gen iPad.

I make heavy, almost constant use of my iPad in my class (sometimes four hours at a time). I can't connect to an external power supply while I'm using my adapter. It's a great product but that one missing idea really puts me back at square one. It's fantastic for shorter periods of time.

The VGA connector will display the following: 1) Your Youtube videos. If you are using the ipad dock then the speaker output on the ipad dock will not supply sound. You will have to use the audio output on the ipad itself. Hopefully, Apple will allow the use of the dock to have sound output while using the VGA connector. Even though the connection to have a sound output is on the back of the dock, you cannot use the VGA connector and speaker output on the dock at the same time. 2) The VGA connector will also display Keynote for your presentations. 3) The VGA connector will allow you to display your podcasts and videos. However, it will not allow you to display your purchased movies from itunes. I have been able to see about 5 minutes of my movies before the restriction is activated. However, this does demonstrate that the VGA connector is capable of displaying our movies if Apple will permit it to do so in the next version or software update. I have the 64GB 3G and I have spent the last few days playing with the VGA connector. Also, with the Youtube videos, it will not show until you actually activate a video in Youtube. Once the clip start showing it will transition through the VGA connector. It does what it is suppose to do but it can do a lot more and I am expecting Apple to make some upgrades to this adaptor and the ipad dock in the very near future.

Our company purchased the VGA cable to link our iPad 2 with our projector and it works very well. The only draw back we have had, the connection to the iPad 2 is rather weak and tends to unplug itself when slightly moved causing loss of signal.

First, I'm amazed at some of the complaints, especially from those working in education.
The person complaining about the 10 cm cable.... LOL! Get a six foot male-male cable from Radio Shack.

I do many day trips for work and instead of flying up and down the coast with a laptop, I can now just bring my iPAD for presentations.

Keynote isn't perfect but gets the job done. Not having the slide deck on the screen doesn't bother me. For those who claim they can't face their audience I have to ask them what's the difference between occasionally looking at the projection versus looking at your display? In either case, you're not looking at your audience. Besides, you should have a feel and flow for your presentation in the first place thereby minimizing the time looking at a slide. Everyone is different but during my technical presentations I usually have a laser pointer which I use to for work flow,features, etc. on the projector screen so there's really no option for me there. I suppose some lecture situations would not want to turn around,

Keynote isn't perfect. More font support would be nice but this review is for the adapter not the Keynote application.

Fortunately I did not have a bad cable like some other folks had.
Plugged it into the iPAD, connected the cable from the projector, brought up my presentation in Keynote and I was off and running. Can't ask for more than that!
Videos from you tube work like a champ on my flat screen monitor too.

This cable met my expectations. I can do day trips with a 1.5 pound computer instead of lugging a laptop through airport security!

The ability to project more than the presentations and video would be nice as would displaying the on both the screen and projector but would probably require a new graphics chip or some other way to split the frames to two outputs. IF I need that capability then I lug my laptop with me. The iPAD is a tablet/large PDA and I don't expect it to do much more than it does.

Oh, and with all due respect, for those who do presentations with their iPhones: Cool idea but don't criticize a cable when you're using a smart phone to do presentations. Like an uncle of mine once told me, use the right tool for the right job.

Last, couldn't give it the 5th star because $30 is a bit much. Otherwise, it met my expectations fully.

The picture output from Keynote, YouTube and even the iTunes app is great. I tried it with both a widescreen and 4:3 display and it was good at auto-sensing, although I recommend you go into Settings > Video and set the aspect ratio (Widescreen or Standard) before you plug in the connector for the best results. Keynote still opts to stretch to fill a widescreen rather than use pillarbox, but hopefully that will be an option in a future software release. Really, the only thing that would make this more useful would be more software that supports the video out, and we should see improvements in this when iOS 4.3 is released.

I purchased this to allow me to show information from my iPad 2 onto the screen for my students to see. Based on the reviews I didn't expect much, but to my surprise it allowed everything to be projected. Games, grades, drawing programs, you name it... except movies bought from iTunes. I'm not happy with that, but this product was well worth the cost.

We use a number of VGA adapters on our iPads at an elementary school. We occasionally secure them to the iPad with some duct tape, but otherwise everything works fine with our Promethean Boards.

Simple, works, provides a second screen for those applications that support it. I'm surprised it doesn't mirror by default, but apps that do presentations (goodreader, keynote, etc) do the right thing...just make sure you're charged up before your talk.
