    False advertising!

    • Written by from FARMINGTON HILLS

Although the advertising states that the product will "mirror whatever is on your iPhone or iPad," I found that, in actuality, it only works on a limited number of apps made by Apple itself. For example, although my YouTube app that came with my iPhone projects video onto my TV just fine, most everything else does not project to my TV. Further research on the web indicates that support for video out for third-party (i.e. not Apple) apps is entirely up to the developer, which makes sense but was not what was advertised. I cannot get Safari to work, either, and that is a native Apple app!

    iOS 4.3 & iPad 2

    • Written by from Seattle

The Apple VGA Adapter works seamlessly with my iPad 2. All the previous reviews no longer apply. I have my iPad 2 mirroring any and all applications using this VGA adapter. Of course, the only limitations (since it's a VGA output only) is no audio and depending on the screen, you'll get "black bars" on the left/right of image because the widescreen limitation can process correctly on most TVs or Projectors, but these are minimal. What you see on your iPad is what you see on the screen AND THAT's ALL WHAT I ORIGINALLY WANTED from this product.

    VGA Adapter Disappointment

    • Written by from SANTA ANA

I should have read the reviews but when I think about it, why is it our job to write accurate product capability in the reviews? The product works intermittently with the dock and not at all without the dock. Why is the dock necessary? I get messages intermittently stating the adapter in not compatible with my iPad. If I unplug from the iPad and reinsert the plug, video out to the VGA device again works but then is interrupted again with the not compatible message. And like others have stated, the VGA capability is tied to the application and is not a selectable option to control as you would a notebook PC. A real disappointment.

    Very limited use!,,

    • Written by from Orlando

As many have said, it's disappointing to rent or purchase a movie on iTunes, then attach the Vga adapter and get the message "not authorized"!!!!

And yet some podcasts are allowed! Go figure!

In the future I will severely limit my iTunes usage regarding movies!!!!

    Works now!!!!!

    • Written by from Bergenfield

In many of the previous reviews people were calling this accessory a waste of money. Many of the issues that people mention are no longer true. As of yesterday I updated my apps in which the VGA Adapter to the iPad now supports netflix, keynote, and even my remote desktop app Jump desktop. If you have a need for veiwing your iPad (APPS) on a screen go get your self the adapter and then have the app developers make their aplications support video out. ENJOY!!!

Works as advertised (read the fine print)

    • Written by from Sherbrooke

I bought this to hook up to projectors and displays for presentation duties over at client’s places with my iPad2. Works great and impresses a lot by itself. But read the fine print! Mirroring is not available with every device it works with...

    Joke connector

    • Written by from Mansfield Woodhouse

I suppose I should have read the reviews first, so it's my own fault.
I am very, very close to replacing my laptop in external business meetings with the iPad. The final piece of the puzzle would be to view documents, presentations etc on a projector or TV output.
I then find to my annoyance that it only works with a very, very few apps. One of which I need, which is Keynote.
Then I find it doesn't even work with Pages - what a joke!
And how difficult would it be to send the whole desktop to an external source? I quote Apples own website for this item "Use the Apple VGA Adapter to mirror whatever’s on your iPad 2 screen — apps, presentations, websites, and more" Misleading at best.

    nice idea, way to limited

    • Written by from Johnstown

As others have said, its a great little adapter but you are so limited on what you can display its nearly pointless. Keynote will display, the photo album works, 2screens is what I have used to show pdfs and websites. I cant play any of my iTunes digital copies, cant display the desktop or home screen. Safari? No YouTube? No Numbers? Pages? No and No Ibooks? nada. Angry Birds? nope.

Nothing wrong with the adapter, apple has just restricted the apps to much for what ever reason. Who knows, maybe they will open things up a bit in the future but at the moment its better to run a netbook or laptop on a projector than the iPad.

Limited to the point of Useless

    • Written by from Redmond

Rated 1 because 0 was not an option...

Well, I guess I could be faulted for not reading these reviews before going to the store...but alas, I was at the store not sitting in front of my computer and asked one of the geniuses there if I could use this to display from Docs2Go or Quickoffice...there answer yes, absolutely. My answer (as well as those here on the board is NO it doesn't. Given that4.2 should be out in a few days, I think I will hold it for another week or so to see if it changes under the new OS but unless it does, back to the store it goes.

    ONLY Slideshows and Movies

    • Written by from Armadale

I purchased this so my iPad could replace my notebook and be used for presentations. i.e. plug into a project.

Nope, this expected functionality is not provided. They should be more explicit to point out that slideshows and movies are the ONLY things this will do.

    It's not the product's fault

    • Written by from KAILUA

There's a lot of bad reviews on this product, and the complaints are warranted, but somewhat misdirected. The connecter does what it's supposed to do... connect your iPad to a second display. The fact that Apple has only chosen to enable it for Keynote, iPhoto, Video and YouTube is frustrating, and I can't quite decide if not listing the limited array of Apple-developed compatible apps is intentionally deceptive or disappointingly absent-minded. We shouldn't have to rely on reading the reviews for that kind of product information. Having the ability to project at least Keynote is very useful, and for that I'm grateful for the product... but Apple should consider being a little more forthcoming with the software compatibility aspect. Hopefully, third-party developers will be incorporating this, and I'll cross my fingers for Safari.

    Very Useful

    • Written by from New Hyde Park

This product is great and works exactly as advertised. There are several complaints on this page about it not mirroring the screen of the iPad. These complaints would be valid if Apple didn't say Video Mirroring Only Supported on the iPad 2, right underneath where it says what the package contains in the product description. People need to read the information that is there.

I used this with iphone 4 before and it worked (only for tv-out like photos, ipod videos and powerpoint slideshow), but later it doesn't work anymore. I think after I updated my ios to the latest version, this thing was really useless to me. So up till now, I'm still waiting if Apple will update the ios again but with this issue fixed. =(

    deceptive advertising

    • Written by from Brussels

All those who have written a review of this product have been too kind. I read and re-read the product description on the Apple web site and the documentation that came with the adapter, and there is no warning of limitations. Caveat emptor, sure, but I also feel deceived by Apple.

Works fine for what it is, but limited

    • Written by from Vancouver

Very limited in the content that it will send to a large screen display - many videos simply won't work. This wouldn't be a problem in and of itself, but Apple really doesn't make the limitations clear prior to purchase. A more accurate product description, including details of what it will and won't support, would avoid the frustration.
