Not what was expected. Poor product.

As many users have stated before hand it is very disappointing that the VGA adaptor does not mirror the iPad screen. Looking to use the iPad for showing documents, but these severely handicaps it. Very few programs support it. I couldn't even very photos on the TV while using this product.

This adapter is quite limited in its functionality. Cannot be used to mirror the ipad display - no playing games on tv, no presenting websites on projector, no awesome 2nd monitor interface as Keynote for Mac...

    so annoyed

    • Written by from Bungay

i teach and this would have been a perfect teacher companion, if only the display would have mirrored the ipad, but just the slideshow and videos, how pointless, what about the apps, ibooks for showing resources or text books.

    im taking it back!!!!

    Not what you think

    • Written by from Leicester

This adapter does not allow you to view the iPad screen. It just allows you to view whatever Apple allows you to. Yes you can view Keynote presentations in playback mode - but not in editing mode. No you can't view Pages or Numbers documents and no you can't view websites with Safari. Absolutely pointless for a teacher who wants to use the iPad in the classroom with a data projector.

It's not possible to transport the normal ipad Screen to the monitor. That makes it nearly unusable. Today I wanted to present the possibilities of the iPad to an audience (publisher) and it was a disaster.

    The most USELESS product

    • Written by from Kingston Upon Thames

So...the description of this product on the apple website says:

"Use the iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter to connect an iPad to your television, projector, or VGA display. Then see your videos and slideshows on the big screen."

Great I think, I can watch my Itunes purchased video's on my monitor...perfect..except no, I get the error 'This device is not authorized to play this content'. So what is the point? Apple, please change the description of this product as it is VERY misleading.

This is useless without iTunes Movies

    • Written by from Saddle River

When you try to play a movie that you buy or rent on itunes it says the display is not authorized to play protected content. I looked it up on Google and everyone is having the same issue. They should really let you know that before buying.

I wish I had of known about all the limitations of the VGA adapter before I purchased an iPad, Keynote, and the adapter.

Seriously Apple, why limit the features for viewing other content besides the bare minimum in Keynote, photos or iTunes?

Terrible! Doesn't mirror screen or play most movies. Don't get suckered!

    • Written by from Fort Monroe

Don't waste your money on this worthless adapter. Doesn't mirror what you see on your iPad to the monitor. It only allows you to play movies and pictures. That wouldn't be all that bad EXCEPT you can't play half of what you own through itunes because it won't let you play protected movies or tv shows on external monitors. What's the point in having a VGA adapter if it doesn't let you display your content?!?!? Absolutely worthless!

Does not work on my HD projector

    • Written by from Singapore

i tried a few times last night to connect to my HD projector in my office. Nothing works. I tried videos, safari, Youtube but my projector simply cannot detect any signal.

i switched to my Macbook Pro using the same VGA cable to my projector and it works, so there is nothing wrong with my Projector nor my setup.

the ipad is excellent but this accessory needs more work.

This product is crippled.... I have paid for several thousand dollars worth of content from iTunes... the least I should be able to do is display it on a projector or play this on a larger external screen. Unlock this limitation with OS4.0 PLEASE! I would have a different outlook on the connector if the restrictions on apps and media were lifted.. and would be very appreciative if it were allowed to be utilized on the Next-Gen iPhone as well.

    Not functional

    • Written by from Burnaby

This was a terrible purchase, I bought the ipad partially just to use keynote and be able to read the slides off the ipad, but keynote goes to a black screen with only navigation controls when you present through the VGA. Photos don't follow the onscreen swipes. Don't buy this until apple improves the software support.

    Lack of VGA capability

    • Written by from Victoria

First of all, I like the iPad, however, with respect to the VGA Adapter, ...

The adapter does physically connect an iPad to a VGA device (TV or projector).

If you NEED FULL FUNCTIONALITY including full Safari browser then this is NOT the device to buy.

I think this is the FIRST TIME EVER that a vendor has used their software to limit use of the adapter so dramatically.

I am trying to find an Apple article that explains why they did this. There must be some technical reason or glitch, but

I had planned on using iPad as my roaming desktop for business meetings. Now I cannot as I also have to carry a laptop to do my presentations which include demoing my company website. Sadly for work purposes, if I only have room for one device, then it will have to be a laptop.

When Mr. Jobs was demoing the iPad during the announcement, it sure looked like it had full VGA and audio capability.

HOPEFULLY A FUTURE RELEASE OF THE VGA INTERFACE will not be so disabled or limited.

Waiting for the next one, this time...

Apple, real bad thing to do to your customers

    • Written by from Sunnyvale

This product does not work as an optional or mirrored monitor. It only works with specific apps.
The monitor is controlled by the app, exclusively. There is NO manual control of monitor functions. This really should be made clear by Apple. The marketing of this device by apple is clearly deceptive. It's limitation should be clearly spelled out.

    Very disappointed!

    • Written by from New York

When I bought this adaptor in an Apple store in NY nobody told me that I would'nt be able to see movies bought on ITunes on my TV. What is the adaptor for if not to mirror what's on the IPad display?

Apple must fix this by a software updata ASAP!

NOT a VGA Adapter, Selective Output

    • Written by from Burlingame

How can an external adapter that should just mirror the iPad out the Video port fail? Apple found a way. I am disappointed because I need to project webpages and I can't! It projects Keynote and has a neat "soft" laser pointer, but if the description says "Apple iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter" I would expect the iPad screen to be displayed on the VGA connect device (like my projector).

Apple, please fix this at the OS level, all output should be displayed!

    Severly disabled product

    • Written by from Schaumburg

I was stupid. I read Apple's description but didn't read the reviews first. I should have. My goal was to display the ipad, show use of it, bring up web pages to do training on them, display our web based reports, etc.

Turns out this hardware requries that the App be written to support it. So far the only app I found that does is YouTube. That's it. Safari, no. Email, no. The OS itself, no. Until Apple changes the OS to send ALL video out, regardless of app, my suggestion would be to NOT buy this unless your whole goal is to watch YouTube via your iPad on a bigger screen.
